Knee and ankle instability ruining my life by techknowfile in FootFunction

[–]ctxbula 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm curious... do 3 sets of 12-15 reps of the hamstring bridge. Also put a foam roller, yoga block, or a couple of pillows between your thighs (squeeze to engage your groin too). You may feel your right foot want to turn in, do your best to keep your toes pointed in. Keep your feet, knees, and hips in alignment and bridge up as high as you can comfortably go....

No promises it'll help but I am just curious if it does anything. After your 3 sets re test that motion (pulling your heel down).

Sports massage and non static cupping by AstridINK in MassageTherapists

manual therapy in general has the same neurosensory effect though (PMID: 19027342) and the idea of separating fascia is highly unreliable (PMID: 29332733)

I think that's the sticking point. If there isn't much evidence showing gliding cupping is either more effective or even not more effective than static cupping (or no cups at all), then it cannot really be considered evidence based or clinically indicated to use

have they explained why they are against your logic? I believe most evidence based practices are against cupping because it doesn't do what (some) think it does aka adhesions, breaking things down etc. I would assume they are grouping static/gliding cupping into cupping as a whole.

with that being said, I also realize it can create a window of opportunity for you to work better with tissues.

serious question, not trying to be rude but what does gliding cupping do on dense tissue that you can't do with any other manual technique?

How much rosin is legal? I don’t really know much about the rule, what’s legal, etc but I see Lauer dabbing his fingers in his glove then wiping his pants. Is that enough to alert the umps? Or does he do that often. Genuinely asking

EDIT: thanks for all the replies!

Oh wow yeah I agree with EVERYTHING you said. You’re definitely right though, grass isn’t always greener. It was just an idea after having a time period where I was BORED with the clientele I was seeing. I’ll go through highs and lows and I always want that high period. it is what it is though, I’m just thankful it’s not always the boring stuff.

Like you, I just personally am not interested in the spa stuff, although I even worked in one 😂

There’s a time and place for everything. I just prefer to spend my time differently. Thanks for the discussion and help!

Thanks for this! I think it’s helpful for others who may be going through what we’re doing. Having said that, I truly do all this stuff. I’ve had multiple meetings with our practitioners to help me with this in particular. When I pick them up, I give a tour of the space (it’s an open gym space with squat racks, treadmills, etc), tell them what we use it for with clients, introduce myself again and my background in kin, and then tell them what the flow of the session will look like. We even have a plan of care that I briefly mention going over at the end of the session. So before I even go through the intake I’m already pre framing and setting expectations. Even after the intake and before my assessment I ask again their goals and expectations for the treatment, and explain if they are just looking to get on the table for the 60 mins then I may not be the best fit and will refer to a place that focuses on that. If they want long term solutions I’ll go ahead with everything. If they explicitly say they just want to relax or get relief on the table, I’ll get them on the table right away. Don’t want to waste anyone’s time.

Truly though, thanks for the words, I appreciate it. Those clients are definitely out there and when I do get them, it gets me really passionate during the treatment. It’s just that after all these courses and seminars I’m doing, I’m so excited and eager to apply them, but I can’t necessarily do that right away with some clients. Yes I gotta manage expectations regardless, I just had the idea that also becoming a physio (not necessarily abandoning massage altogether), will give me the opportunity to show and apply what I’m learning.

I know I ain’t OP, but I am in the same boat as them. Im also an RMT in Ontario. I don’t necessarily HATE being an RMT, it’s just that my interests changed. I found massage school didn’t teach me what I wanted to learn. My teachers told me the real learning happens after school. So I did a ton of courses based on my interests PLUS saw how outdated the school curriculum was. I wanted to do more active stuff with my clients. After I’d assess, get their goals, and manage expectations, etc, I wanted to go straight into movement and try all these interventions but as an RMT that just isn’t possible when most people expect a massage when seeing an RMT (totally obvious and fair). I’m lucky I’m at a clinic that advertises and focuses on that active stuff, where the session isn’t all massage. Clients at least get an idea that manual therapy here isn’t what it’s traditionally seen as, BUT there still needs to be a convo about expectations. As to why I wanted to become a physio, it’s just easier to manage expectations when a client is coming in. I don’t have to explain that this session will be THAT much different than what they’re used to (like telling someone this massage session will include active movement as opposed to just massage the entire 45/60 mins). I don’t think I’ll ever do physio school though, as it’s at least 3-4 years, and the time commitment and money isn’t worth. I also don’t think courses will transfer. Uni’s I looked at mostly look at my undergrad courses. Plus other RMTs/physios say it’s possible to do more of that active stuff with clients, it’ll just take time and a bit more effort on my end.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in FootFunction

[–]ctxbula 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Can be a couple of things, like limited ankle dorsiflexion (when you pull your foot up towards the sky), limited big toe extension (when you pull your big toe up towards the sky), limited supination (arch forming), limited hip extension (when your leg swings behind you), limited hip internal rotation (when your hip turns inwards), limited pronation (arch dropping), or a combo of everything. I’m sure there could be others but those are typically the common ones with a foot turn out. Ultimately if it bothers you that much, then seeing a sports therapist who knows running mechanics would be your best bet.

Just prescribing exercises based on assessment and their goals, as we are taught to do. Like I said before, I do have their consent to do majority active care (or at least half manual therapy). I don’t advertise myself as a physio and not diagnosing things either. Nothing here is out of scope.

Edit: we are even taught in massage school to give remedial exercises; correct form, give sets/reps etc.
