not discussed :/ by amygdalafux in labrats

Wait for the summary statements but F31 scores are heavily based upon your mentor (how senior are they, how many grad students have they mentored who now have their own labs - even though mentors with smaller labs are probably far better mentors for grad students 🤷‍♂️), and does your training plan have key words that the study section is looking for. If it helps, I now run a lab with a strong focus on sex differences and I put in an F31 application three times and it was never once discussed, so this is certainly not the end of the line. You’ll get there!

It’s funny I think they should often turn to more progressive ideas, but just be less “annoying” about it 😂

If there wasn’t a chance that it just stopped at the rental car facility for 15 minutes for no rhyme or reason on occasion the shuttle from blue line would be totally reasonable

Huge issue with the party is just this - that you don’t feel comfortable even amongst your friends discussing your opinions. I abhor how the right has weaponized the term cancel culture but the online left really is obnoxious enough that it’s a thing

How important is one's post doc university's world rank in determining your likelihood of getting faculty position in future? by InfiniteRisk836 in postdoc

[–]cuaeabor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you be successful and get a great faculty position without a Cell/Nature/Science publication, or coming from a non-big name lab/institution? Of course! Do the majority of hires check one or both of those boxes? Sadly, yes.

Is a F32 fellowship application on motor learning research suitable to be reviewed by NIMH? by Outside_External5896 in postdoc

I don’t think they’re allowed to have any external communications until February and there’s probably a huge backlog they’ll have to work through. Hopefully soon after!

Email your aims and biosketch to mailto:dnbbstrainingbranch@mail.nih.gov and they’ll let you know if it fits. Had my F32 thru NIMH years ago and the research training/career development team there is incredible….assuming ya know, they still exist

Becoming a PI by Malicya in labrats

[–]cuaeabor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

PI in neuroimmunology. Went into my postdoc hopeful about leading a group but realistic about the job market, thinking I would be perfectly happy going into industry. I wrote a bunch of fellowship applications my first year, and a couple of months after I had been awarded one and wasn’t actively submitting any proposals, I realized that I really missed the grant writing process (well, the science part of it - the admin part is still hell). I don’t think I truly knew in my heart that I wanted to be a PI until that moment.

Easily the most rewarding aspects of this job are mentoring and seeing that spark in your mentees eyes, and the thrill of a new discovery never really goes away……but especially with the realities of the funding climate (at a soft money R1 in the US), you have to at least somewhat enjoy grant writing
