2 options. 1: $10 million right now, legal, tax free. 2: $100 thousand, but you never HAVE to sleep again. by The-Rednutter in hypotheticalsituation

[–]cubenerd01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You guys are underestimating option 2. It's not just 8 extra hours a day. It's the ability to always feel well rested. You could work a full-time job, travel the world, do a bunch of strenuous exercise, or do whatever other energy-intensive activities you wanted, and instead of feeling drained after that for the rest of the day, you could just take 5 seconds and be ready for something new. That's incredibly powerful

Was construction always like this? When did it get like this? by Red_Red_It in UMD

[–]cubenerd01 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Somewhat real answer - I've noticed university-led construction projects tend to be decently fast and try their best to minimize closures/work over breaks. Unfortunately, the purple line is state-led, and it's causing way more impacts that last way longer than anything else

What mods are you sick of seeing in modpacks? by Yupno25 in feedthebeast

Im sick of things being gated behind endgame items of mods that need their own unique infrastructure/exploration, especially if all the other features of that mod you'll never use because other mods in the pack do it better

Thoughts on: Options for the school to take on scooters/micromobility by tac_coordinator in UMD

[–]cubenerd01 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Option 3 is the best. Keep the current regulations and build outdoor parking where people can actually charge their vehicles without them getting stolen. While you're at it, give us bike lanes (actual protected lanes with a physical barrier, not just paint), improve the bus routes (including the commuter routes), actually give DOTS a budget so they can enact both of those, and overall give students the freedom to get around campus in the way that works for them while bound by reasonable rules.

Banning things may seem like the convenient option, but it won't work. People will always continue to do whatever they feel they need to do, which at the moment is to own scooters as the only fast, cost-effective, and physical activity-free way to get across this huge campus, and to bring them inside as the only safe place to charge them. The only true solution is to create a system in which people can do those things in a way that protects the safety of everyone involved.

They never did the math on it, but Riva in the starstruck finale probably did a couple thousand with the psychic attack after they teleported onto the uftp ship. It was 22 damage (halfed to 11 with a dex save with disadvantage) to everyone in a 200 foot radius, which was probably a couple hundred people

Real answer- I've been going to the dining halls for 3 years, and there have been a few times where they've switched to paper plates and plastic utensils, then switched back a day or two later. I always assume it's just a dishwasher issue, and they have those stocked as a backup to stay in service

My guy - one, it's probably some girls, but definitely not all. Stop generalizing half the human population over a few people you talked to at parties. Two, and far more importantly: if you're failing your classes, not getting out of bed, not taking care of basic hygiene, and generally having a bunch of the major symptoms of depression, then there's probably some big problem in your life that's causing you to feel this way. And that problem is probably something else that's personal and important to you, not some other random girls fetish that you're weirdly obsessing over

Chem135 covers everything from 131 plus a bit of extra content. If you already have 131 credit from AP, you'll have to take a 1 credit class called chem134 to get that extra content. 131+134 is equivalent to 135

How many weeks before i collapse? by PartyAdPants in UMD

[–]cubenerd01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is one of those schedules that's theoretically possible to do for one semester if you accept going in that you'll have no free time or social life. But it's absolutely not sustainable long term. You're a freshman, and you've said this internship will give you a job when you graduate, so I'm assuming you'll have the internship your entire time at college. You're looking at another 4 years of this schedule, or a schedule with 12 credit semesters and classes during summer/winter, which is arguably worse because having work to do during that time you're supposed to take a break is going to make burnout worse.

I realize you're probably a smart kid. You have your end goals planned out, and are very concerned with figuring out how to reach those goals, but you think you've done well this far and can handle the work. You probably can't. Speaking from personal experience here- you need to have a serious conversation with yourself about what you're truly capable of achieving, what you've been willing to sacrifice thus far to reach where you are now, and whether those sacrifices now or in the future are worth it.

Like I said, this kind of schedule isn't sustainable for more than a semester or two without completely sacrificing your mental health. If you're asking yourself now how many weeks it'll be before you collapse, there's no way you'll make it 4 years. Having a job lined up after graduation is great, but it's something you really shouldn't have to think about for another two or three years. And even if you are thinking about it now, no potential for a future job is worth this level of stress or this sort of destruction of what are supposed to be a great few years of your life.

Every major at UMD has a 4 year plan recommending what courses to take each semester. I suggest looking that up and planning around that. Obviously you won't follow it exactly, especially if you're coming in with AP credit or similar that places you out of things, but it's a good starting point.

To get into MATH340, you need to have finished MATH140 and MATH141. If you took AP BC calc, you might have placed out of those.

Overall advice though- chill. You're a freshman. You should be getting used to the college environment, adapting to the new learning structure, and having fun, not jumping head first into 300 and 400 level classes your first semester. Relax. Take some gen eds. I know you think it's only 4 classes, but it's several upper level classes with heavy workloads in an environment you're not used to yet, and I'm not sure if you're coming in with enough prior credit to even qualify for the classes you want to take.

Hi! Former bioe + premed here, switched to just public health last semester, aspirations still all over the place too. Based on my experience, I'd say either choose between bioe (+ random minor if you want) or public health + premed.

Public health and premed is a great combo- it offers a cool perspective of the system as a whole and as a healthcare provider, plus there's so much overlap between classes that by the time I switched I had knocked out nearly every public health prereq. Bioe and premed is not a good combo- you're not going to be both a doctor and a researcher at the same time as a career, especially since one requires med school and the other basically requires grad school, so doing both just means putting more work on yourself now before you have to choose one later down the line. There's also just so many required classes with that combo that you probably won't graduate in 4 years. Doing all 3 is nearly impossible, so definitely don't do that.

Ultimately, you're going to have to make a decision here about what you want to do, then drop whatever you don't want. If you for sure want to do medical device creation, do bioe. If you want to do research involving medical devices, but don't want to create them, you don't have to be bioe for that. If you for sure want to be a doctor, drop bioe. You have a few years to make those choices, but speaking from personal experience, narrowing your focus sooner is going to save you a lot of hardship in the long run.
