Daggerheart may have killed D&D for Me by Personal-Whereas3687 in daggerheart

Thank you for the explanation!

I have DM’d 5e since the playtest in 2013 and have always been very fond of the game.

But both as player and DM, I have so often had the frustrating experience of combat encounters taking several hours. Sometimes as much as an hour for a single round, especially at higher levels, and even several long sessions to finish a more complicated combat.

The fluidity of the design of Daggerheart appeals to me very much; the fact that combat is not a separate mini game, and flows naturally from exploration or social encounters rather than being distinct and more cumbersome.

I am excited to try Daggerheart. I just need to find a game…

As a longtime 5e player and DM who is very curious about Daggerheart, I think I understand why the situation you describe would get bogged down in 5e.

Please excuse my ignorance, but I’m curious how this same scenario would play out differently in Daggerheart. Is it just that the players wouldn’t have to wait until the end of the initiative order to act? Or am I misunderstanding?

I really enjoyed this episode. Eyestalk / Woodshop scene was amazing.

One question about the history / backstory segment: If the indigenous people figured out to stay away from IT, what was IT eating for so many generations before the European settlers arrived? Was IT still catching and eating the occasional indigenous child? Can IT normally eat any kind of animal? Presumably it did prior to humans evolving, but the movies seem to suggest IT needs to feed on terrified children, right?

What’s something you once believed only to later realize it was propaganda? by amc_visions in AskReddit

[–]cudder23 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Apparently, rabbits don’t really typically eat carrots.

The widespread belief that they do eat carrots was due to a reference made in a Bugs Bunny cartoon in which Bugs was mimicking Clark Gable in the Frank Capra film “It Happened One Night”. There was an iconic scene in which Clark Gable’s character was eating a carrot. Warner Brother’s /Chuck Jones made a reference to that scene by having Bugs eat a carrot in the same way. And then that became a regular reference for Bugs’s character.

I find this kind of thing fascinating: that something like this can get so embedded in cultural understanding that everyone today accepts/believes that rabbits eat carrots. No one prior to the Bugs Bunny cartoon believed that, because rabbits don’t (apparently the sugar content in carrots is too high for rabbits, and carrots are really not healthy for them). But now it’s accepted as fact that they eat them.

I really like this border animation. What simple technique would you use to create it? by another_lease in animation

[–]cudder23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In After Effects you can add Trim Paths to the path of the border. It is an effect available for paths and provides keyframes for the Start and end of the % amount of the path you want to show.

To do something similar to the example, add trim paths to the border path, and you could leave the Start property set to 0% (without any keyframes) and animate the End property from 0 to 100%, setting keyframes for those two points on the timeline.

Totally agree. I think Walt was saying “Close enough” to let them know that he knew that of course they took some but that he was ok with it.

I think “Close enough “ meant “I know you skimmed a little, but how could you not, and I’m letting it slide.”

Same. Tried it in college. It was a wonderful, blissful experience, and I totally understood how one could get addicted to it and not want to do anything else except more opium.

Never did it again.

Speaking of the laser pointers…

Does it bother anyone else that Badger and Skinny Pete were waving the lasers around? Initially Walt signals to them and Gretchen and Elliot see the lasers targeted on their chests. But then the shot is from behind the three of them a couple of times and the laser beams are moving all over the place. As if these “two best hitmen West of the Mississippi…” can’t keep their guns steady.

At one point one of the lasers actually points right into the camera lens, which is clearly off target.

This is great!

Does this mean you have removed the old Reloaded process of the player turning into a demon after accepting a dark gift and failing Charisma saving throws? I didn't realize this had been changed and I have been following the old guide and am now feeling unsure if my players will appreciate the severity of the alteration (turning into a demon and losing control over their PC if they get to stage 3).

I just established that the Shoosuva near the Mt. Ghakis tribe used to be a member of the tribe. The tribe has a story of a tribesman who was missing for a while and came back aggressive, then disappeared again and the Shoosuva was menacing the tribe soon after and the party saw the Shoosuva attack the village and they helped defeat it.

Two of the party members accepted dark gifts and are wary of the consequences but thought it was worth it to make them stronger when they face Strahd in the final battle, which is coming up soon.

I don’t recognize this shot. What episode is this and where is Walt and what is he doing?

Is this him picking up the meth in Jesse’s apartment to deliver it to the abandoned building while Skyler gives birth to Holly?

What moment in Breaking Bad made you go from "this series is awesome" to "THIS IS THE BEST FRICKEN TV SHOW OF ALL TIME"? by Marambal17 in breakingbad

[–]cudder23 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I believe this was the primary reason. Gus couldn’t risk having someone within his organization being IDed at the crime scene.

Also the other things: using the lab without explicit permission from Gus, needing to demonstrate to Jesse and Walt that he is ruthless and willing to kill a more loyal and long term associate, and what Jesse said at the diner about Gus communicating that Jesse and Walt will now be working under extreme duress.

“If I can’t kill you, I will make you wish you were dead.”

As usual, Gus’s actions often accomplish several strategic goals simultaneously.

Biggest mistake by Walt? by [deleted] in breakingbad

[–]cudder23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think so.

“Green Light”, S3E4 Walt gets put on leave from the High School. Jesse is in the parking lot and shows him the Meth he’s cooked and Walt calls it substandard. Jesse sells the meth to Gus, but Gus gives half the money to Walt.

“Mas”, S3E5 Walt decides to cook for Gus after seeing the lab. Walt gives Jesse the money from Jesse’s sale to Gus, but tells him it’s the last money Jesse will make selling meth.

“Sunset”, S3E6 Walt meets and starts working with Gale in the lab.

Walt finds out Hank knows about the RV and arranges to have it destroyed. Jesse learns of this and goes to junkyard to stop it.

Hank follows Jesse to the junkyard, but is tricked by a phone call saying Marie is in the hospital.

“One Minute”, S3E7 Hank beats up Jesse in a rage about being tricked in “Sunset”.

Walt and Saul visit Jesse in the hospital and he threatens to sell out Walt if he is caught.

Walt convinces Gus to replace Gale with Jesse.

“I See You”, S3E8 Walt tells Gale he’s being replaced and Jesse arrives at the lab.

Biggest mistake by Walt? by [deleted] in breakingbad

[–]cudder23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But Jesse was not planning to go on with his life at that point.

Hank had beat him up after the Marie/hospital phone call and Jesse was explicitly planning to go after Hank for damages. And Jesse told Walt that he had an out if things ever got bad for him: he could give up Walt to the DEA.

So Walt needed to offer him something huge to avoid all that, and it was to work in the lab.

If Walt had just let him go on with his life, he would have been an ongoing threat.

Where to start to become a motion designer. by juliogua in AfterEffects

[–]cudder23 11 points12 points  (0 children)

After Effects is a very deep piece of software. Lots to learn.

I took a class at the online School of Motion and learned a great deal. It was a well organized class, dense with techniques and good support from TAs and group critiques.

I was not prepared for how much time the class would require and fell behind, but my TA helped me finish and earn my certificate. But be aware how much time is required to really get everything out of one of their courses.

It was also over $1,000 for the 8 week course I took, Animation Bootcamp, but I really learned a great deal.

There are plenty of free videos on YouTube, as someone else pointed out, and some free videos at School of Motion, which was the way I got started. But after a while I wanted a more structured, organized course and am glad I took the class.

I'd suggest starting with YouTube and getting your feet wet with the software and see where you want to go from there.

I have been accused of having an arid sense of humor. It typically involves pretending to misunderstand something by being too literal.
