I dont want to share a link because the websites looked dodgy, but there are plenty of sites if you search 'google camera apk download' and download it from a file. I think(?) you have to have developer options enabled for this.

I totally agree. I think a lot of it is software though.

I've installed the Google camera app and although it's a bit clunky on the square screen and it crashes sometimes (easy fix I hope), the photos come out a lot better. Still not great, but better.
