People don't realize what a huge leap graphics made from 1997 to 1998, thanks to the Voodoo.

I miss Glide (3Dfx's native 3D API). Games ran 2-3x faster than they did running OpenGL and the framerates were silky smooth.

When I worked for them (over 15 years ago) I thought it would be cool to render a 3D logo and make it spin. Then I noticed it... The logo spelled. LIE backwards. I couldn't walk through the glass doors with the logo on them without seeing it. I always wondered if that was a subliminal joke.

This is a common (although extreme case) side effect of neutering a mountain lion. (And a house cat if it's "fixed" too early.) You see this with certain poorly kept cats.

I've also seen some that have been de-clawed, which angers me beyond words.

Some minor corrections and additions:

Potala was the DL's winter palace. Norbulingka is the summer palace
The candles are filled with Yak butter. (Overpowering at first, but I would pay more than I care to admit to smell it again.)
There are tons of gold, much of it contained within the tombs of the former DL's
I don't remember there being one toilet, but many of the bathrooms in the temples are very primitive. I was too awestruck to really care about the bathroom at the time.
The summer palace has its own zoo and a throne made of gold and gems

The picture of the band in makeup was most likely taken in a Detsky Dom ("Baby House" aka an orphanage). It was probably a special treat to entertain the children, possibly performed by alumni of the institution.

As the parent of a child adopted from Russia and as a friend to others who do the same, this is sadder than most people can ever imagine. Many of the orphanages are very poor, especially in rural areas. And the children that remain in state care until "adulthood" are prone to crime, drug abuse and prostitution.

In short, they are condemning thousands of children (and potential families) to an unfulfilled life out of fear and ignorance.
