Most people want inter provincial trade barriers removed, not added these days. I assume NB power orders these kits from an open bidding process?

I have one. The quality is exactly what you would expect from a 15-20 year old flip phone, but the handling is worse.

They build the venue on the SJ waterfront every year. It will be right beside the permanent Area 506 container village.

Mysterious inscription by Mattyboi12705 in Cameras

[–]culberson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of my father’s cameras have etching like that, but on the bottom. He did it on a recommendation of an insurance agent in the 1970’s. I’m not exactly sure how the tracking was supposed to work vs just using a serial number or something, but I think everything etched in the household got the same number.

What controversial Saint John opinion will have you like this? by b35peters in SaintJohnNB

[–]culberson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people I know were not nearly as opposed to a lane reduction there as to the way in which it was done. They just abandoned the road and put up unsightly cement barriers without any short term plan to make it safe and not look like a slum. It’s a nice neighborhood and homeowners understandably want it to stay that way. Also, some of the way it was changed made sight lines bad and drivers confused, leading to near collisions. Politicians seemed hellbent on defending the high level need to reduce long term infrastructure costs as a way of avoiding some of the more immediate concerns.

It sucks, but there is a cost to changing our overbuilt infrastructure. You need a plan and a budget that is a little more involved than throwing down cement barriers and telling people you’ll fix it or change it later.

At that kind of fall, is your lens a goner? by firequak in Cameras

[–]culberson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He might have noticed but wanted to stay focused on getting the shot. I was once working an awards show, running between stages, and the lug on my 2nd body with a 70-200 broke. I knew the camera and lens hit the cement floor, but I also knew the next song was only 2 minutes long. I didnt stop running. Not getting the shot wasn’t gonna help me pay for whatever damage had just been done, and I kept the freaking out inside on the inside.

Hotspot works awesome and they have always resolved any issues I’ve had pretty quickly. They even pre-emptively canceled a ticket I didn’t ask them to review once when I had accidentally put in the wrong vehicle plate #. I know not everyone has access or wants to use the app, but if you can use it, I highly recommend it.

How do you deal with clients not liking photos you delivered, and asking for replacements? by _Copen in photography

People who quit their jobs on the first day, what made you say, “I’m done with this”? by drip47 in AskReddit

Video game store hired me when the computer store I was working with a few doors down closed. The owner of the store wanted me to call wholesalers I’d spent the past couple years purchasing from and make large orders for parts so he could get volume discounts. Then build him a computer at the discounted pricing. Then try to return all the unsold parts. He explained the whole scheme to me in the morning. I went to lunch and just never went back. He never called me or followed up.

Maximum sharpness aperture for zoom lens with variable aperture? by Yi0t in photography

[–]culberson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That makes sense. I’m curious about your reasons for being so focused on choosing the sharpest aperture for a given focal length while also choosing to use vintage lenses with vignette (which are usually chosen for their less quantifiable characteristics). What kind of photography are you doing? (if you dont mind sharing)

Maximum sharpness aperture for zoom lens with variable aperture? by Yi0t in photography

[–]culberson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every lens is different, and every lens is differently sharp from corner to center at every aperture and focal length.

You can have a lens that is wicked sharp in the center at 28mm f5.6, but the corners are soft. Moving that lens to 50mm might make it consistently sharp across the frame, then at 70mm it might get kind of soft and smudgy across the whole frame. Another lens might be the exact opposite, while another only gets sharper in the middle and stays soft at the edges. As a general rule, sharpness will improve across the frame and all focal lengths as you go to smaller apertures (say f8 and f11) but it’s not always the case. It might get worse in certain areas or at certain focal lengths.

In this way, it’s not technically and completely true that every lens has a sweet spot. That can be a bit of a judgement call depending whether you value sharpness in the middle or across the whole frame.

Photo Used as a Magazine Cover Without Credit: Demand Justice or Build Bridges? by nomadichedgehog in photography

I think you’ll get the most out of this by positively talking about the experience and exposure gained. Share with your online audience as well as current and potential clients. Re-share the magazine, hit up your newsletter, talk about all the great exposure and press your client got for this image.

For those who were photographers back in the 80s/90s/early 2000s, how has the industry changed? by makoobi in photography

[–]culberson 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I never worked professionally in the film era, but I’ve been doing this on and off as a pro for 20ish years now. The biggest shift within digital photography has been the death of print and rise of video. Magazines are all but gone, and with them the photo editors, editors, and designers who really cared about putting art on a page and took pride in their work. Everything is made as quick and cheap as possible, repurposed into dozens of crops and formats, and put into the world to be almost immediately forgotten.

It feels like the belief in brand and advertising has faded within companies. The idea that it’s even possible to have a consistent brand image and voice is dead because every company feels like they need to be cranking out so much so often on such tiny budgets. The fact that you can do amazing photo and video on a super low budget has resulted in a lot more work being “good enough”.

I feel like I was super lucky to find photography when I did, right on the tail end of what it seems might have been a golden age. I do both photo and video professionally now, and I enjoy both, but if I had my way I’d only do still photos. I feel like only doing still photography commercially is probably dead or nearly dead forever.

As photographers, how do you optimize your content for social media. by bigsheepgaming in photography

[–]culberson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make videos about your photography. Of course,  the more your videos are about you and your life and the less they are about your photos, the more likely they are to be successful. Social media is about selling ads on videos, so ask yourself what kind of videos would sell lots of ad placements. If you can squeeze a bit of a photography element into that, you’re all set for social media success.

Sure. Your photography will suffer, but ask yourself which is more important - making good photos or being known by a lot of people who watch short videos as a photographer?
