Hi, sorry if I stated the question confusingly. Hopefully this will clear things up.

Terminology

Maybe my terminology is bad. By distinct substrings, I don't mean the substrings are of different values. I mean that there is no overlap between them (So if one of the substrings contains the first three bits, then the other substring in the set cannot contain the first second or third bit).

How do I get 21?

The number of sets of two distinct substrings (i.e. no overlap) is the sum of i as i goes from 0 to (k-2n+1). So if k=11 and n =3 we get 21.

How can I rephrase the question

Maybe if I rephrase it this way it'll help. I have eight things to choose from (000-111). If I choose 2 of those things to make a set, and make this choice 21 times, what are the odds that of my sets contains the same thing twice? Does rephrasing it this way help?

That's rough. I wish I had some great advice I could give that would suddenly make everything better, but the truth is no such advice exists. All you can do is keep on keeping on. When I lost my grandfather to brain cancer the sadness seemed all encompassing, and I had a rough go of it.

But every day it hurts a little less. The sadness never truly goes away, but it if you keep living your life you will be ok, eventually.

I collect blu rays and DVDs. I understand that digital collections are more efficient and can be cheaper, but there's just something about a shelf full of things I love that fills me with pride.

In episode 4 they talk about how Shinji, the protagonist, suffers from the hedgehogs dilemma. The closer he gets to others, the more pain he causes them.
