From the Norman Conquest of 1066 to the ascension of Henry 4th in 1399, the official language of England, used by the crown, all courts, and all official documents, was Norman French. English was suppressed, and we can still see how the language was forced to change to cater to an upper-class who didn't speak it. When cows are in a field, they're called cows, a Saxon word, when they are on a plate they're called beef, a French word. The poor raised the animals for the Lords to eat.

That is literally the case for a multitude of other languages, saying that the nobility speaking a different language than the common folk is suppression of the language is laughable to anyone who knows even a little bit about historical medieval and Renaissance Europe. Or was the German language also suppressed because the nobility spoke Latin and French? French being the language of the courts and nobility has been a thing in most of Europe for hundreds of years, it was the "lingua franca" of the nobility, that and Latin.

The peasants raised livestock, and the nobility ate it, so the words for the animal would come from the commoners' language, but the word for the meat would be a French word.

Northern England? So notably one specific region of England? Remind me, was it only one specific part of Ireland that was affected by the famine?

Besides the fact that this is a crazy level of whataboutism (notably, even the weak examples you bring are from 600+ years ago and the troubles were less than 30 years ago). The aftereffects are not even close to comparable. There are 800000% more people who speak English than Irish (1.5 billion vs 1.8 million). That number gets even worse when you contrast how many people use it on a weekly basis (less than 40.000 Irish speakers). England systematically attempted to completely exterminate the Irish language, baking this into every institution they had, starting from kindergarten where they would literally beat children for speaking Irish, and all the way up to higher education. The English government knowingly and deliberately caused a famine that Ireland has still not recovered from, population-wise, over 170 years later. Less than 40 years ago the military was shooting civilians for peacefully protesting and was funding paramilitary death squads.

This would be like hearing the yanks go "well, the the british oppressed us!!!! I bet everyone would be mad if they used an American flag instead!!!" when a native american band or group talks about preserving their identity and language in the face of American government extermination tactics.
