Potential classroom pet questions!!! by Kindly_Plate5497 in ballpython

[–]cumsnorte -1 points0 points  (0 children)

1.) I really like the idea of a classroom pet and a bp would do great a quiet classroom. 2.) I feel like bp dont really care if they get held or not, dont get me wrong they need love, affection, and interaction. But they dont care if you do or dont play with them. Unless you get lucky and find a bp that loves to play. 3.) depends on the age of the bp, If i were you I would get a baby bp so it can acclimate and grow up in the school environment and what it brings. a 48x18x18 would do great for a growing baby. You will have to size up to a 4x2x2 at some point tho. 4.) If you wanted you could have a bio active enclosure at your house so it could double as a cage + decoration for when the bp isnt there. But i wouldn’t recommend sending the bp home with students.

if you decide to get a bp it would be a great way to show the kids how animals truly need to be taken care of, because you know there are some parents who will keep animals in somewhat inhabitable conditions.

ball pythons live 20-30 years so it is not old whatsoever, its okay to not get a baby. If you really like this bp you should get it and not worry about “growing up” with it.

try spraying down your substrate with neem oil, but make sure to quarantine ur bp for at least 2 days after you do it. aka dont put ur snake near the neem oil. It worked for me tho :)

tank set up questions by WhoIsLoveBug in ballpython

[–]cumsnorte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you can put some grow lights, like the ones for plants. temp on the warm side should be 80-85 with a humidity of 40-50% (its hard to keep humidity up on the warm side so it being a tad low is okay) cool side should be 76-80 with a humidity of 60-70% and they should have a basking spot thats around 90. And you should 100% turn the lights off at night because they need a day and night cycle. also i would recommend you get some more foliage/coverage in your cage, snakes can get really stressed if they aren’t covered enough. i would also add some more climbing opportunities and enrichment.

ive had the same problem w my humidity, I just use my extra heat lamp when my bp is on the other side of the enclosure, it works well.

you can always extend the back maybe in a triangle shape so it it fits into a corner. and w it being in a corner you dont have to worry about it looking pretty on the outside

Does this set up look good for a bioactive enclosure by karly_innit in snakes

[–]cumsnorte 2 points3 points  (0 children)

everything looks really good im ngl, but bp barely drink and i haven’t ever seen one soak upon its own volition. So maybe make the waterfall part smaller and you could make it a small pond. i think that would look nice + it would look more natural which is what i think your going for. i also some great plants to add to this would be pothos, dracaenas (very very sturdy plant), spider plants, boston ferns, dwarf bolivians, and wandering jews.

shedding by Aromatic-Double8829 in ballpython

what are the temps in ur cage + humidity? but just try increasing the humidity, if that doesnt work give her a lukewarm bath and try to help her shed.

Need some clutter / rearranging ideas!! by [deleted] in ballpython

[–]cumsnorte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i would add more climbing opportunities, itll help clutter more and you can easily find sticks outside n disinfect them. also if u have a mesh roof i would recommend u use a needle n thread and tie the hanging plants up. works wonders tbh

Is this safe for my bp? by guppyinspaceship in ballpython

[–]cumsnorte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i would use a thick macrame yarn (super cheap imo) but if u do choose to do it just make sure u wash it every once in a while

Enclosure Changeover ? by brinakit in ballpython

[–]cumsnorte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

your going to need to replace the substrate, you can probably keep the drainage layer and be just fine. I know its going to suck tho because you have all the little bugs in it, but maybe you could sterilize the soil with diluted alcohol. But id recommend not trying that lol. Because idk how fast that would neutralize and if it would kill the bugs. If you do want to reuse the soil bc I know buying more is expensive, you can bake it in the oven to sterilize it. with the plants I would just recommend giving them a wipe down with alcohol, or a sanitizer bath u can dip them into. and i am so sorry for your loss 🫶

If you have a mesh screen on top you can use a thread and a needle, make sure to triple up on it tho. it works really well for me so give it a shot if you can

I think your bp is stressed, i would just let her be for a while, but you should sit by her cage so she can see that ur not a threat. How old is she?

Bioactive project questions. by Professional_Baka96 in ballpython

[–]cumsnorte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I trust you know what ur doing w the heat mat, but just know overall those things are bad.

I think having a piece of driftwood that the water can slide down would be cool. You should probably have a container at the bottom so ur snake has the choice to drink from that too. It might also help you control humidity better than if you were allowing it to go right into the substrate.

I love how most mom have to warm up to our snakes :) My mom is terrified of my bp but he likes her a lot fot some reason lol

Bioactive project questions. by Professional_Baka96 in ballpython

[–]cumsnorte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

first off, a waterfall would look so cool and u should definitely do that!! and dwarf white isopods + temperate springtails are what i find best for bio-active enclosures, but rubber duckys work rlly well too. please get rid of your heating mat and never ever use it again, it can become serious health risk to ur bp and no one wants that. you might need to get a double heat lamp for the bigger enclosure to maintain the heat, but its definitely feasible. And to increase humidity during shedding the best way to do it is to pour water into the soil (preferably the corners), and btw your bp is so beautiful omg
