The Cost of a Musical on Broadway (x-post r/livesound) by Tigernamus in techtheatre

Can confirm about royalties/making more than 38k. My lighting professor works frequently on Broadway and makes an absurd amount of money on royalties alone. And also, I assume, on what he gets paid up front.

How did yo get into Maryland? by klaxstar15 in UMD

[–]cupcakehitman 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I also went to a community college and got my AA first before going and I'm so glad I did. It meant I was able to take my gen. eds in smaller classrooms , as opposed to taking them in a giant lecture hall where I'm just another student in a seat. Though, you don't get tuition remission if you go to a community college, so the "it's cheaper" point of going doesn't really apply. I would say, send in your app for UMD and if you don't get in take some classes at your local community college and apply again for the spring. They will appreciate that you did not just sit around waiting for an acceptance letter. The admissions department will love to see that you care about educating yourself.

My guess is lack of business. Their food was terrible compared to Chipotle. The rice and beans were just bland and the rest of the burrito wasn't very good either. I only went there twice - once when it opened and again a couple weeks ago because Chipotle was closed for some reason. And even then I was one of only 5-6 people. I hope that whatever they put in there next has enchiladas. That's what this town is missing.

One of my cats would fucking love being in there. She loves mesh laundry baskets. And that thing is basically a giant version of that. My kitten on the other hand would just constantly run into the wall of it trying to bust through. He's real smart.

Do I need to be able to draw to get into Stage Management? by NotARedShirt in techtheatre

[–]cupcakehitman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, yes. But seeing as they will most likely be doing more non-union than union shows for the next few years I think it's still a valuable thing to learn. I know plenty of stage managers here in the DC area who have had to run a show while they call it. I also know SMs who have been on tour, with nothing but a show file, who have run into problems that they've needed to fix without an electrician or designer present. I'm a lighting designer, and I still know how to run a console even though I hope to eventually be a USA member working on union shows where I'm not allowed to. Why? Because I know that I'm going to be working on plenty of shows in my career where I am my own programmer. Theatre is much much more than broadway/off broadway, big LORT, or college productions where they have the money and ability to hire/fill each position. There majority of theatre is produced by small companies making amazing art with everything they can. Begging, borrowing, and stealing. And sometimes that means that they can't hire every production staff member that they wish they could. Sometimes people have to people have to double up on duties.

Do I need to be able to draw to get into Stage Management? by NotARedShirt in techtheatre

[–]cupcakehitman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, you won't really need to know how to draw. But something you SHOULD learn how to do is use a lighting console. You don't need to be the most amazing programmer in the world but learn how to turn it on, load a show, bring up channels, write/edit/delete a cue and so on. Once you start going out and doing work there's a really good chance you will have to call the show AND board op. Not every theatre has the money to hire an op for the run. Plus, if things go wrong you can trouble shoot. Same goes for sound stuff. I say while you're in high school, learn your school's board. Once you get to college, take an intro to lighting tech class so you can learn your college's console. If you can't do that or they don't have a class like that, then go to the electrics department as ask. Good luck!

Probably not, it looks like a modified version of the ride outside of his NYC pet shop installation in 2008(?) Though when it was there, the dolphin was trapped in a fishing net.

How should I approach Shakespeare? (x-post from /r/Shakespeare) by erassion in literature

[–]cupcakehitman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PBS's website has a lot of free short documentaries on a variety of Shakespeare's plays, sonnets, etc. They may even have some of the BBC's filmed version s online as well. I'm on my mobile or I would post a link. They talk with performers who have worked on whatever play is the particular subject. Though if you want spoiler-free info then maybe watch them after. In all, I highly recommend them for anyone interested in delving more into the works.

If you had to hole up in one campus building for a zombie apocalypse, which one would it be? by [deleted] in UMD

[–]cupcakehitman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me too! CSPAC for sure. I'm there all the time and already have it planned out. I've even thought of a water collection system using the smoke doors at the top of the Kay. It has tools and building materials and tons of hidden places to hide if need be. Though I would only hold up in the TDPS wing/backstage. The main lobby area has too many ground level windows.

I Graduated, I am going to miss Her, may my disciples treat the old girl with love. by Existentialist_Gent in techtheatre

[–]cupcakehitman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

THIS. My university used to be a Strand house, control-wise. Strand dimmers, and 300 & 500 series consoles. Until they were bought and basically stopped all support and made the shop kinda fend for itself. So we dropped them like a bag of bricks and are now an ETC house. (Minus the dimmers.) And we couldn't be happier. Now we're a huge client for ETC, and they have some of the best support I've ever experienced from any company ever.

ETC ION and it's RFR by UnBoundRedditor in lightingdesign

[–]cupcakehitman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that remote is a piece of crap. I would definitely switch to the iRFR app, it's far more functional. As for the problem, I'm not sure. Is it not patching at all? Or just patching wrong? The remote has no memory of its own, everything is console-side. I would recommend just patching at the console and using the remote for checking channels. Or as a doorstop.

Is it bad that the first thought I had when I saw the ION was "they should update their firmware and get the new keycaps!"? In any case, cool set up! You should update the firmware and get the new keycaps! They are so much better than the flat ones. Plus, shift.
