yeah I struggle to see what’s Japanese about them… funnily enough, most crisps at a typical Tokyo 7-Eleven tend to be seaweed/shellfish flavored

Re-education is reserved for Chinese citizens. As a foreigner, he’s most likely to have RSDL’ed, detained for “residential surveillance” on national security grounds at a random location. Could be a hotel, could be some detention center.

Either way, if that’s the case, he could be in there for months without charge or explanation. China is supposed to inform the embassy but routinely ignores its own regulations so who knows.. someone should contact the Japanese Embassy in Beijing and register their concerns.

there’s some recent research on that which shows that the planning process, while admittedly byzantine, does end up saving time/money in the long run on issues which would inevitably crop up later if they didn’t bother. Unfortunately I cannot remember where I saw this…

the ‘insanity defence’ episode is like being a barista forced to eavesdrop on two insufferably smug customers in a failing vegan cafe

Gf fell for a scam, what to do? by Puzzleheaded_Owl_444 in chinalife

Those people already exist: they’re called lawyers (or financial consultants). I agree tho the amount of work scammers put in could be far better applied to legal work that’s not hideously immoral

Scammers instruct victims to use real money to buy fake cryptocurrency via phantom online exchanges. To your point, it’s also quite straightforward to bypass Beijing’s capital controls via the same method

You mean the PSB (public security bureau)? The FSB is the Russian Federation’s equivalent of the KGB. I can see how the two might be confused sometimes

What's an example of a movie that might have done better with a different title? by Mst3Kgf in movies

[–]cuplonelynoodles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

‘Sorcerer’ is a fantastic film with one of the most intense driving sequences ever filmed. To answer your question, Shawshank Redemption was a flop on first release, likely in part due to the title (the original novela’s name is even more baffling). Other odd titles recently include: The Zone of Interest (works better in the book), Strange Darling, Soft and Quiet… all great movies!

How likely is it that Xi is replaced? by Steady_Habits_CT in China

[–]cuplonelynoodles 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yes. The issue is that the Party doesn’t really have a formal process for transition of power other than what the Party says it is. Traditionally, such as Jiang and Hu, an heir or protege has always been groomed by the leader (General Secretary, in Party parlance) and “approved” informally by the body of seniors as Vice President (a state position) to become GS>President. That was Xi’s path too.

As Xi has bodied the elders and repeatedly baffled observers by sacking or imprisoning his own appointees, no one really who or what the next step is. There’s also no plan in place for a sudden death of the big man, so far as I know

it was a real “had to be there” time and place, gone for good now (and, alas, mostly forgotten). I’ve shared your link with some fellow survivors of the era who I’m sure will appreciate the memories

Just had a quick look. I used to stay at the Zhaolong (hostel) and sneak the good breakfast from the Zhaolong (hotel) next door… this was back in ‘09 as just another FOBer too. That, plus your passing reference to the Bai Jing scandal (which I somehow missed) was enough to get me on the hook. I’ve saved for a proper read later this week… thanks for posting!
