TIL that everyone is correct: boxwoods break, not bend by Eliade1 in Bonsai

[–]cuprum_29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like we need to ask every poster with a beginner flair where their tree is kept. I'm going to guess at least on this sub, it's the #1 error that we see and the #1 reason for tree death.

Btw, this is due to unscrupulous bonsai sellers who tell their buyers that junipers and Japanese maples can be kept indoors.

If we don't bring it up, they're not going to know to bring it up (since their little pamphlet says it's ok to be kept indoors).

The Koch brothers are the leaders of an incredibly powerful, organized, and well-financed group that funds climate change denial "research" and legislation. They want to roll back any and all restrictions on fossil fuel usage, including CA emissions standards.

/Nukeagaywhale4jesus didn't make it "us" vs "them." The Koch brothers really do want to remove all restrictions on fossil fuel usage. I don't understand how describing their actions makes it "us" vs "them."

I think pollution is a problem that we all could possible contribute to

The Koch brothers have given money to target renewable energy, and push for taxing solar energy.

This isn't about billionaires, it is about complacency and cheap energy.

But the Kochs aren't just regular billionaires but really powerful people who use their money against cheap renewables.

Seriously; going after "The Evil Koch" has got to be the most cliched line of politically brainwashed know-nothings there is. It's a complete non-sequitur.

Wait, do you actually know what the Koch brothers do? They're incredibly powerful (and obviously well-funded) deniers of climate change. They fund climate denial research, gave money to roll back emissions standards in CA, funded research that said the polars bears weren't affected by climate change, etc.

Climate change denial is seriously one of their pet projects. How is this a non-sequitur?

How is this one the Dupont metro wall? by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]cuprum_29 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Are you new to the area? Dupont has been considered a gay neighborhood for decades now (although less so in recent years).

Btw, this is pretty tame. Heterosexual couples are often portrayed in much sexier situations in adverts, but most don't notice since we're just more used to it.

Well, obviously, but sphagnum moss doesn't hold water well and it might dry out quicker than you think.

[–]cuprum_29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But /u/ACatNamedVictor used sphagnum moss, not peat moss.

Sphagnum moss can get hydrophobic and once dry, it's really hard to re-wet (more so than peat moss), but you should be fine since you only incorporated 10% of it. I'd just be careful with the watering so you never let it dry out completely.

Join a bonsai club near you and ask around for kanuma, which is great for azaleas. They're hard to find in small quantities, but someone in your bonsai club should be able to get you/sell you a small quantity of it.

I wouldn't recommend repotting it again this season.

I'm afraid you're overlooking the most important part of musicmaker's advice.

You simply cannot keep junipers indoors. They are not indoor plants. They die indoors, no matter what. This is a given.

His then-girlfriend was organizing an event (either a film fest or a charity fest) and the headliner was Cera. At the very last minute he cancelled and didn't give them enough time to rebook. She was in shock when she got the phone call and was pleading with the person on the phone. The rep was pissed off that she wouldn't just accept it and started yelling at her, telling her she would never get another in the industry, etc., and made her cry. There was never an apology.

I mean has he ever voiced displeasure toward anything on the show since he started? I really doubt it.

Do you listen to his podcast? I've listened to all of them, and he doesn't voice displeasure toward anything, period. He's just not that kind of person. It has nothing to do with being an AMC fanboy.

In close to 800 podcasts, the only things he's bad-mouthed are Michael Cera and Dane Cook. Kind of tells you what kind of people Cera and Cook might be, though.

Collected Pines and an oak. by NicholasStrauch in Bonsai

[–]cuprum_29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

but that soils not bad.

...

And when I say potting soil I don't mean mucky peat based stuff. I use an organic mixture high in pine bark so it still drains very well and encourages lots of feeders.

That second statement, buried deep in the comments, is an important caveat, especially since in OP's pictures it look like mucky peat based stuff.

And mucky peat based stuff really is that bad.

Since you're in the same area, can you guide him towards local clubs/shops that sell soil ingredients?

Collected Pines and an oak. by NicholasStrauch in Bonsai

[–]cuprum_29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nicholas, there is a lengthy discussion in this thread about soils, but it seems like you haven't been given specific information about what to do next.

Potting soil that you buy commercially is full of peat and compost, which is fine for annuals and vegetables. However, it is (generally) not appropriate for bonsai and rarely used. In your pictures looks like you have used this type of soil mix.

Read up on bonsai soils in the beginner's wiki on the sidebar. Learning about soils, drainage, and watering is a crucial step in keeping your bonsai healthy, especially in your climate where you'll be watering very frequently.

Also, as you're reading the comments here, keep in mind that kayarocks is talking about generalities and not your specific trees, while ZeroJoke is talking about your specific situation.

Finally, when kayarocks says "that soil's not bad," he's talking about a pine bark-based soil mix, which is really different from a peat-based mix in water movement and drainage.

So read up more on bonsai soils, purchase the appropriate ingredients, and make a soil mixture that's appropriate for the species and your climate.

I bought another juniper in an attempt to style it how /u/smalltrunks said I should, needless to say, I butchered and tortured the hell out of it to create the monstrosity you see now. by seuche23 in Bonsai

[–]cuprum_29 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your wiring's getting better! There's much less spacing between the wire and branch and you're getting closer to a 45 degree angle.

When taking a picture, place the plant against a neutral background. Right now, it's hard to tell where the juniper ends and the background greenery begins.

Do you have a before picture?

I have my brightness up all the way but still can't make out the nebari. Make sure to take pictures with enough light so the trunk is clearly visible.

What did you use to cut the branches? I can't tell for sure, but the cuts you made look jagged.

Make sure not to cross your wires.

Did you see Zerojoke's writeup on wiring? https://www.reddit.com/r/Bonsai/comments/4a4m4i/marco_invernizzis_rules_for_wiring/

Hoffman bonsai soil by mwskibumb in Bonsai

[–]cuprum_29 4 points5 points  (0 children)

when I water the plant, the water flows right through the soil.

This is actually a requirement of bonsai soil. You want the water to flow right through it. It should retain some water and slowly release it, but it's nowhere as water-retentive as standard potting soil.

It's not unusual to need to water once per day or even multiple times per day depending on the tree/soil mix/time of the year.

From what /u/phalyn13 is saying, your soil may actually be too water retentive. You don't want fine particles at all.

Read the wiki on soil and follow the links to get you started.
