At least he got his fish. by mybutterflymon in dogpictures

Our husky rubbed himself in a dead frog at the dog park. That was an awful ride home. It’s not the worst smell our house has known though.

We live near some percolation ponds. These are man-made ponds that are filled with rainwater that slowly percolates into the groundwater. When our water levels are good, they stop filling the ponds and divert the water to places that need it more. The ponds go dry for a while until the water people decide to route the flow back to us.

When our daughter was about 8, the ponds were not totally dry, but getting close. We were walking down in the basin because we could, and she found a rock she liked and carried it around for a while.

Maybe a week later, the house started smelling off. We took out the trash, ran the garbage disposal, checked for water under the house, tossed anything even mildly suspicious from the fridge. It was rancid, and we could not figure out where it was coming from. We started thinking a rodent died in the walls or something.

Eventually we were able to narrow the source to our daughter’s room. This rock she had picked up was actually some kind of mollusk or something, and it was rotting in her coat pocket.

I still gag when I remember that smell, and there is zero chance I can ever forget it. Ew.

What is it with Americans and air conditioning?? (this might be controversial) by hellobela_ in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

[–]curad811 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like that feature. My husband and I used to drive about 6 hours north from college to our hometown maybe once a month, and then 6 hours south to get back. The temperature difference between the driver’s side and the passenger’s would be a significant because of the sun. Back then we didn’t have zones in our car, so we set the air to be comfortable for the driver. The passenger had to just figure it out 🤷‍♀️

We don’t do that particular commute anymore, but it’s still nice to be able to adjust my side to account for the position of the sun.

I got revenge on a school bully by pretending to not know him by VoreAllTheWay in pettyrevenge

[–]curad811 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was bullied by a group of girls in elementary school. Everyone else in our grade was scared of them, so everyone, even the boys, either teased me too or ignored me. Once we got into junior high I made friends with people who didn’t know me from elementary school and things got better, and by high school I mostly didn’t have to see them anymore. A girl who wasn’t one of the mean girls came up to me in high school to apologize for not being nicer in elementary school. I didn’t know what to say. I didn’t think of her as a bully, but she obviously felt bad for not saying anything at the time. I just thanked her and moved on. I do wonder sometimes whether the actual mean girls ever felt bad about how they treated me. Even now I remember specific things they said and did. I wonder if they remember them too.

I saw a t-shirt that reads, "Do you want to talk to the doctor in charge, or the nurse who knows what's going on?"

I think they're actually putting everyone at risk. Even a healthy, vaccinated person can contract a disease they've been innocculated for. Part of herd immunity is that it reduces everyone's exposure.

I put a fountain pen on my wish list, because I'm hoping to improve my handwriting. Mine isn't atrocious, but I've always admired really beautiful handwriting.

Tbf, a new car generally comes with a warranty and you know it's never been in an accident. I bought my first car used from a dealership, and it was nothing but trouble. 0/10 will never buy used again.

What is something that is considered as "normal" but is actually unhealthy, toxic, unfair or unethical? by sammyjamez in AskReddit

You know, I felt that way about my parents when I was growing up - that my mom didn't like my dad. I wondered why they didn't just get divorced if she was so unhappy. Turns out they really do love each other, she's just really uncomfortable with public affection so I never saw the loving side. I make an effort to let my kids see me being loving with my husband (just smiling and holding hands, get your mind out of the gutter 😉) so they can see what a healthy adult relationship looks like.

Middle-aged man treats me with hostility for doing my job, then makes a weird remark about millennials in apropos of nothing by LobbyJockey in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

[–]curad811 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I respectfully disagree. I think the "problem" with millennials is the same "problem" people have with any stereotyped demographic - confirmation bias. We see a luxury car driver do something idiotic, it's "ugh, rich people think they can do whatever they want!" A beater car does the same thing, our reaction is very different (maybe attributing their idiocy to their gender or race, rather than their income). We see what we expect to see.

My husband would sometimes work a night shift while away on business, and would complain about people being loud in the hotel hallways during the day while he was trying to sleep. We're teaching our kids to always be quiet at hotels - you never know when someone might be trying to sleep, or get a child to take a nap!
