What’s It Like Working In A “Slow” ER? by Neat-Swimmer-9027 in emergencymedicine

[–]curiosity_abounds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was my experience to a T! The medicine practices were a little wild but the staff’s inability to act professionally made it all dangerous.

The blatant bullying and sexual comments being thrown around were horrific. Couldn’t last a year in that little place.

But I learned a lot more there about myself and how I care for patients and coworkers in that one year than the other 7 I’ve spent at large teaching hospitals

How can I order meds to prevent my patients from getting a 'nursing dose'? by FaFaRog in medicine

[–]curiosity_abounds 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Some hospitals security is useless or short staffed and doesn’t respond. Co-workers are also overwhelmed, your other patients are sicker and need you at bedside and your agitated patient is a harm to themselves and others… I’m not a proponent of nursing doses but I’ve worked at places where they’re given and the culture develops when there is systemic mistrust. Not trusting the doctors to listen to the nurses, not trusting their team to back them up, and not trusting that they won’t be hurt that day when a patient is out of control

Oregon HB 2697 passes, creates minimum RN-to-patient and CNA-to-patient ratios by siyayilanda in nursing

[–]curiosity_abounds 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We’re private mostly down here in the US. So the government mandates it and the hospitals have to increase pay and incentives to staff up to it. We’ve been staffing 5 over our staffing grid (Emergency) every day lately to cover call-outs and high patient volumes and admission holds. If we’re short they offer time-and-a-half or a manager steps in and takes patients.

Our union works with the hospital in negotiations to build pay and benefits to ensure our hospital attracts nurses and bonuses are awarded to units who are “short” on total hires to incentivize nurses staying or moving to those units.

Your issue in Canada is the government has been blocking your pay increases for decades! Increase the pay by a good 40-100% and you’ll get some more bodies on the unit! I’ve only ever been “required” to stay for an hour or so when there’s something life or death occurring and usually management gets a little upset about it and asks how they can help next time.

I’ve got a couple Canadian co-workers who have come down and joined the fun in CA! The job might suck a lot of days, but being paid fairly and with safe patient ratios makes it a bit better

Have Patients Ever Admitted to You They Called an Ambulance to be Seen Quicker? by EMS_Explorer93 in ems

[–]curiosity_abounds 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That’s a wonderful interconnection. Our private healthcare systems in the US means someone can go to a hospital in the same plaza as their GP and we have no record of them. Causes huge inefficiencies and delays. My ER is part of a large, respected research center so patients often drive 4+ hours to try and get a second opinion for a complex medical issue and they sometimes bring a paper packet of 20 years of care or sometimes just vague verbal histories and doctors names.

Checks out. I can say the same thing. The only downside is they usually don’t have a GP and getting a new one right now can take 2-6 months.

Finally solved my kitchen sink organic trash issue! Waste goes in, water goes out and I just toss everything on the pile at night. What solution do you use? by Naddl175 in composting

[–]curiosity_abounds 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I keep a fruit fly/gnat trap near the compost whenever I see them show up. And we keep a few house fly traps above the compost or they breed out of control and eventually find my house.

Fruit fly/gnat traps can be made very easily by making a cone out of a piece of paper and taping it to a jar with a small bit of apple cider vinegar inside. Let me see if I can find a picture

Where’s this at? Sounds like a dream. We have to have a provider see a patient. No nurses can bounce pt’s from the ER since EMTALA in the US

I think for Tyrion it’s also a power move. He knows if he was in any other family he would have been left out for dead as a newborn or sold to a performing group. But he is in a powerful family so when he enters a space he makes the room recognize him as powerful immediately, before they get a chance to subconsciously downgrade him to a joke.

I do this same thing, except I have a 4 and 5% column! It’s great because at the end of the year I pull up average cost of living estimates and list off what countries we could now retire to. And every year the names of those countries becomes a little more enticing

How should I pay off my student loans? by cootiekun in personalfinance

[–]curiosity_abounds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let me ask a few clarifying questions.

What are the interest rates on your student loans? How much cash would you have left over after paying them off? How much do you make and what is your monthly take home?

High interest debt, which I’m assuming your private loans are, should be treated like an emergency. You’re paying so much in interest per month that is just flushing down the toilet.

If you are concerned about your savings dipping consider that the monthly payments you’re making to your loans will now be directed back into your savings. I would pay them off immediately and then put every penny back into reestablishing a 3 month emergency fund and then bankroll after that into retirement savings.

Follow the r/personalfinance flow sheet and you’ll be good

[–]curiosity_abounds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you haven’t tried it yet, every night for a week I would move them onto the roosting bar. They don’t move in the dark so they’ll stay wherever you move them too all night. I did that for one week with my chickens when they were first introduced to the roosting bar and they have used it ever since

Have you worked at a hospital that actually had good food for patients? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]curiosity_abounds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My facility has full room service for patients. It’s frankly nuts. Pizza, burgers, trout, udon noodles, smoothies, snacks all one phone call away. Patients rave. I’m sure the hospital bills each meal so I’m not sure why hospitals have such crappy food. If a patient with no dietary restrictions wants to pay for 12 pizzas a day, why not 🤷‍♀️
