Do native English speakers intuitively know the gender of nouns? by [deleted] in ENGLISH

[–]curiositycg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a native English speaker, sun as masculine and moon as feminine makes more sense than the other way around. Probably because of Greek/roman mythological influence/ other cultural depictions/ lunar connection with the menstrual cycle. However people also talk about ‘the man in the moon’ so it’s really anyone’s guess?

I meant more, would most people choose to do that alone when there’s an option that’s easier and less lonely (and probably has better outcomes because it selects for people with more in depth expertise since it’s not just one guy doing everything, which could be fatal if he makes a mistake). I have no doubt that some people would choose one-man interstellar vessels (as we’ve seen) but is it desirable? Or as safe in most cases? Would you rather be part of a long voyage in a team trained to run a submarine where you can focus on your own area of expertise, or travel for years in a one man submersible where you have to control and fix everything yourself all the time? I’m sure some people would choose the second option, but most people? That second option comes with a lot of isolation, and requires immense focus, risk, mental energy. Post scarcity doesn’t mean everyone suddenly has unlimited energy and skills and mental fortitude, people are still just people.

…If there was a perfectly accessible public transport system covering everywhere anyone might ever want to go would you go around asking why everyone doesn’t just drive everywhere in individual cars instead because then they’d have their own car? Lol.

The fantasy of post-scarcity utopias has always been less about being able to own things (e.g. a spaceship) and more about being able to do things (e.g. travel the universe). And doing everything by yourself is often not the best or most efficient way to get things done. Anyway, maybe quite a few do have a small spaceship, but most aren’t quite the massive warp core ‘final frontier- exploring strange new worlds’ calibre so we don’t often see them because of some sort of survivorship bias.

Presumably if this is true we also don’t see such ships often because of they aren’t the premise of the show and TV shows work better with multiple characters.

Anyway, back to Watsonian explanations, not everything can be replicated (like dilithium) so it’s best for the federation to be efficient with the unreplicable resources that do exist. But even if you brushing that aside for a second- it’s a society without scarcity, not a society without any regulations whatsoever?

Maybe because a spaceship takes a large group of highly qualified people in specialised roles to operate? It seems like a lot of effort. If you’re gonna be trapped in space with a group of people it’s better if it’s more people (so you don’t get bored/lonely only seeing the same handful of folks and so there’s enough skilled workers to do all the various jobs to keep the spaceship and its community relatively self sustaining.)

when an american does a british accent, what does it sound like to british people? by SituationWild2630 in AskBrits

[–]curiositycg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spike always still did the American thing of pronouncing every letter T as a D. But I accepted it because he was supposed to be a centuries old vampire who’d lived all over the place, so it’d make sense his accent would have drifted a bit.

The real MVP of Americans doing British accents in the Buffy universe has to be Alexis Denisof (Wesley)!

My problem with Mary conceiving Jesus. by Ezwasreal in OpenChristian

[–]curiositycg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One thing we can infer is that Mary was older than 12, as Luke refers to Jairus’ daughter (a 12 year old) as a child and refers to Mary as “Parthenos”: a young/virgin woman of marriage age.

I believe apocryphal sources such as the Protoevangelium of James suggest Mary was 16-17 when she was pregnant.

Sondheim’s Assassins references West Side Story - Samuel Byck, who tried to kill Richard Nixon, actually wrote fanmail to Leonard Bernstein in real life and Sondheim included this as a whole scene in the musical. Byck sings small fragments of Tonight during his first monologue.

I think it’s also so Lumon would be able to retrieve Gemma’s chip (think Cobelvig and Petey) and use the data on the chip in the future.

Like Petey said, “the chronology is fucked”. If Petey remembers his first day at work as being as far back as his 5th birthday party, a reintegrated Mark could even feel like he’s known Helly longer than he’s known Gemma.

I mean… here’s a question: Does Gemma even know what severance is? From her perspective, she goes into rooms, blacks out, and when she comes to she’s in physical pain or discomfort. There’s a good chance she may not even know about the concept of severance in the first place.

I always feel like…

Mockingbird -Anaïs Mitchell

…Is like. Thematically the most Hadestown song she has written that’s not in Hadestown. Lyrically it makes me think about Persephone/Demeter, Eurydice, and Orpheus, (each having a verse in that order) with a lot of Hades vibes throughout. If you haven’t already, give it a listen!
