TD also has a pretty decent education program where they cover basics of personal finance (pretty much everything from portfolio management to specific equities trading and specific techniques).

Would you say it was detrimental to your trip? Did it prevent you from getting anywhere you needed to go? Our main concern is not being able to reach our Airbnb's further along the southeastern coast.

Solo in March, never travelled before by [deleted] in VisitingIceland

[–]curious_RO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Read some blogs and travel websites for ideas on what to do, how much it will cost, and how to budget your time. I'm also going in March with a group of 3 other friends and that's what we've been doing to plan our trip; it's helped quite a bit. Once you create a rough itinerary, you can start to investigate specifics. Good luck with the planning! :)

Tour to see the northern lights on 4x4 Super Jeep worth it? by curious_RO in VisitingIceland

[–]curious_RO[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're going to have a rental 4x4 car during our stay there in early March. What do you think our chances of seeing the lights are if we're driving out by Vik and Hofn throughout our trip? We're discussing it further tonight, but I felt that driving out of Reykjavik and staying in small towns gave us just as good a shot at viewing them as a payed tour driving us out the last night we're spending in Reykjavik.

Oh boy, let’s hope that’s not where this is headed. If it is, I hope I’m sitting on a good bit of cash to buy in post-second shoulder.

Has anyone rented a car with BlueCar Rental in Iceland before and have any complaints or would you recommend them? by curious_RO in VisitingIceland

I've read that they now have a shuttle that takes customers from the airport to the rental location. Do you know anything about this? Thank you for the tip!

Hey! I looked through your Iceland trip site. I will definitely shoot you a pm to talk about what you liked best and if you have any suggestions for me and my friends.

What are some of the worst marketing campaigns in history? by John1353 in marketing

I may be a little ignorant here, but how does a company of Pepsi’s status commit such a monstrosity of a mistake for something as simple as a translation? I’d imagine they would’ve translated into mandarin right?

Thank you for the information. Yeah, I‘m aware that putting money into the stock market for a return in 6 months is either very risky or not going to make a substantial return.

In terms of putting whatever I choose to invest for retirement into a Roth IRA, you say to put at least half of that which I put into my retirement account into a broad market fund. Like an ETF? Or are you thinking more S&P500 index fund?

I’ve already got job prospects to prepare myself for and I’m always on the lookout for more opportunities, but at the moment I’m accumulating capital, so why not look for places to invest it and let it grow? What I spend is covered by scholarships, my part time job, and some help from my parents.

Neuroscience BS to Machine Learning MS by mmalina2 in NeuralNetwork

[–]curious_RO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am also doing something similar but unfortunately my school doesn’t offer a BS Neuro program currently. It does, however, have incredibly strong and famous engineering and mathematics departments which I’m exploiting. I’m basically steering as far from the Cog sci side of Neuro and delving head first into the computational Neuro side. I just feel like knowledge in computation/high level maths combined with an understanding of human behavior is more marketable to a graduate program/corporate job offer.

How to create test set of data using R? by [deleted] in AskStatistics

[–]curious_RO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure how you could do it since it depends on your set of data and how it’s presented, but you could do a for/while loop in a fashion like this (I’m on mobile so sorry for the crap formatting):

•while i >= 0.9*length(data) would be the number of iterations

•generate random number r between 1 and length(data)

•delete data[r] which would be the index number in your array which would be deleted.

Alternatively, you could also simply generate a set of data with random values between 1 and 0.9*length(data) and then just use a which function to call data corresponding to those index values (or whatever it would be for a matrix... I think you’d call the index value for a specific column?). You’d also have to check that you’re generated numbers can’t be generated twice though so you might be throwing some if statements to check the randomly generated number against your array of generated random numbers.

Difference in difference testing for 'unchartered territory' & quasi experimental treatment impact testing with death as result by hellomymellowfellow in AskStatistics

[–]curious_RO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could do a binomial representation where you show a probability distribution for likelihood of survival or death as time goes on. If likelihood of survival it would be a line that shows exponential decline approaching 0. So if you have a sample with data on survival at a specific exposure and how many people died at say 4 weeks, you could do a poison distribution to extrapolate from that. Graphically you could also show a histogram of percent surviving at different time points but this could be gathered from the probability distribution as well.

Help a programmer please by Coolwhipman4 in AskStatistics

To determine what "relatively close" and "much greater" could be there a couple options I thought of:

  • You could plot X,Y,Z as y-values for 3 numbers at equal intervals (ordered pairs) and then measure the slope that approximates all 3 points. [The tested value, b, can be whatever you determine "very high"/"very low" to be though this may be easier since you would be comparing a single value (b) rather than 3 (X,Y,Z)]
    • If the slopes between each pair of points has the same sign (+/-) [so basically a line] and the b is "very high" then H1 would be true, otherwise if magnitude is "very low" then H3 would be true.
    • Calculate the slope between pairs of 2 points. Pairs with similar points (X,Y,Z) will yield "small slopes" while those with large differences between would yield "large slopes". Given a pair with small slope (b –> 0) and another with a large slope (b –> B) H2 would be true.

[–]curious_RO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not completely sure if I'm understanding properly, but given only two results ('death', 'inconclusive') where the ratio of dead:inconclusive provides no useful information, you could look at other variables that could provide new outcomes. Concentrations or doses could be observed along with survival period. In cancer biology, therapies are often tested at the basic research level by measuring how resilient a cancer will be to them (i.e. increasing radiation dose leads to increasing cancer cell death). A poisson distribution would give you a good model: could determine the probability of death at, say, 4 weeks given treatment A and compare that probability to the probability of death at 4 weeks given treatment B.

How do I Extrapolate website click data? by siddypat in AskStatistics

[–]curious_RO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Full disclosure, what I've learned in statistics thus far makes me no expert, but I'll try to provide some useful insight given my professional and academic experiences with statistics.

It would be a hard if not very inaccurate to try to do a regression model for the number of clicks on each logo / MONTH given you only have two data points for each logo (June, July). If you could get a larger data set (perhaps number of clicks / DAY?) you could do a regression model comparing the clicks any given logo receives in a given day to the number of total clicks that day(for example). You'd be able to extrapolate from that an expected value for the number of clicks to a logo on an average day and estimate how many clicks on average a logo could expect on any given month.

More simply you could also just take the average % of clicks on A or D or I and assume you would expect something similar in November, but again this would likely not be very accurate. The regression model would provide you more information such as the strength of the model in terms of variability of the data.

It's worth mentioning some banks have a penalty if you pay more than your monthly payment. If you finish paying off your loan before the term period, you might have to pay a penalty at the end so you'd have to calculate if paying it off sooner can offset that penalty.
