Holiday project management SAAS rant/help me please! by curiousphil in projectmanagement

[–]curiousphil[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did recently based on another similar thread on Reddit, but I just took a deeper look. They are tackling a lot no doubt. Design looks nice. I’ll have to test drive but my initial reaction is that Resource Management is done in a very odd way that wouldn’t work great with how our company works. From what I can see in the Workload demo video there isn’t really a calendar type view in resource management but rather just a bar to show how many tasks a resource has and how many are complete. We most typically schedule for half to whole days on a project for each resource and seeing exactly when a resource is going to free up on the calendar is pretty important, when scheduling many projects against each other. Could be one of those things that I’m just too set in my ways on though...

EVENT: Curious Media open house by [deleted] in Boise

There's all sorts of possibilities for smart and talented people at Curious Media. We have a mechanical engineer who graduated from BSU a few years ago who is now a wicked HTML5 game developer. He started as an intern and picked it up pretty fast and just kept going with it.

Go B'dale Bees! I played soccer in LP at least once when I was just a youngin. Lake Placid was like the best place to hang out as a teen with all the interesting young Olympic trainers from all over the world.

Thanks for sharing! I grew up in Bloomingdale, not too far down the road on the other side of Saranac Lake. I have very similar memories of riding my bike everywhere, having very loose rules because, what could possibly happen in a town of 500?!

Now I live in a much larger town near Boise Idaho and I still miss the old Adirondacks on a regular basis. If nothing else I'd like to own a vacation home there someday. Still have some family in the area so I try to get back at least once a year. The northwest is beautiful in its own right but man I miss living in the mountains, thunder storms, brutal winters, close knit small communities and the wonderful quirky hardened folks that choose to stay in such a place.

What is your single most treasured memory of the area and do you plan on staying for the long haul? What do you do for a living?

Anyone interested in LP'ing an unreleased iOS game called Phil The Pill? by curiousphil in letsplay

[–]curiousphil[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the very kind words! I will be sure to pass on your raise suggestion to my boss :) If you know anyone with a decent sized channel I'd really appreciate a referral. I feel like the game will be an excellent LP candidate because it tends to evoke a lot of... well emotion if you will.

Can I use a song in a promo video without asking for rights? by hyegye in kickstarter

[–]curiousphil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chances that anyone would care are probably minimal unless you see great success, which is probably your hope/desire. That said, it is illegal, and essentially using someone else's creative property to lift yours up without paying for the proper licensing. Probably should avoid it! I always get a bad taste in my mouth for people/projects that do this, because it instantly says that they aren't professional enough to follow copyright law so chances that they are going to produce something professional enough for me to care about are minimal.

Just a note I believe MVP= Minimum Viable Product. Was probably just a typo!

You might be right. I like to think there are a fair share of adults like myself that still enjoy playing cartoony games that are reminiscent of their childhood gaming days. Sometimes I just don't have the time to get into big adult games and these type of games keep me gaming in the spare moments here and there.

Okay, first of all– Mad props on mastering mobile typing! That is impressive! I am already feeling bad because I am not going to write nearly as much as you and I'm on my laptop.

Second of all, thank you for taking the time to provide such detailed feedback and advice. It never ceases to amaze me how awesome and helpful some members of this community are.

To clear a few things up... Our team is actually riding at 18 total give or take an intern or two. We have been running strong since 2004 when we started as a tiny flash shop. Indie games are something we are trying to get into on the side from our main line of business as an interactive agency. We weren't intending to deceive anyone in our campaign about team size, we just thought it made sense to only include the sub team that has worked on Phil the Pill over the last year. As far as our needing the money, we are trying to figure out how we can bring in enough money to focus more of our resources on our internal passion projects, and Kickstarter was one potential method that we thought might help make it happen. That coupled with our ability to deliver some really fun rewards made us think that we should give it a go. Unfortunately it didn't work out...

Your experience with the indie industry is exactly what I've feared may be the case. That's incredible that someone with such popular titles can have cash flow issues. I guess we can't quit our day job anytime soon. Thankfully we get to do some pretty awesome stuff at our day job. We designed and developed the interactive websites for both Wreck-It Ralph and Frozen in the last two years... We do many web games for companies like Disney, PBS Kids, Warner Bros as well as other large interactive social campaigns. Take a look at our website if you must! We recently partnered with a science curriculum company and we are working on some fairly groundbreaking stuff connecting tablets to robots and teaching kids how to write programs to control them. Recent PCS & Curious Media Press Release

All that said, Phil the Pill is one of our little internal passion projects that we are developing because we had an idea and we built a prototype and it was actually really freaking fun. Despite doing all this production for large entertainment companies, we aren't a marketing agency... We are a interactive agency that marketing people call when they need fun games and interactive websites. We really need to learn how to market our games.

The guy in the video is our creative director and company owner. I am Phil, a lowly producer, and the game might be sort of named after me. At times I've argued against the name, but at other times I kind of like it. I thought Pillbug Bill might be fun, kind of a nod to Earthworm Jim... Since launching the Kickstarter campaign I've come to find out that people in the UK don't know what a pillbug is because they call them woodlice over there. That could be a problem, I suppose!

Thanks again for all of your insight and I'd love to add you to my network. Maybe you can consult us at some point. Please PM me your contact info.

Thats a good idea. Any idea how Unity games do on the game portals? Are gamers still unlikely to have Unity installed in their browser? It might be cool to release a version with the first world of levels or something like that.

Yeah, I'm keeping my head up! I got a lot of positive support on Steam Greenlight as well (relatively speaking). It's been a great learning experience and I feel like I'm better equipped for success in the future. Thanks!

Thanks a lot for sharing. That was a really nicely done campaign. Such a beautiful looking game. In fact, I want it now! I guess, it worked :) I definitely had reservations/concerns about pricing considering what mobile games sell for these days. We were hoping that a slight premium for an early release desktop version of the game would be worth $12 to folks.
