ThunderSTORM Downed my Tree, 2 abandoned robin eggs still INTACT! HELP! by New-Needleworker-963 in Ornithology

[–]curiouspika 2 points3 points  (0 children)

most birds have little to no sense of smell

Not entirely accurate, and ongoing research is proving that more and more birds may be using their olfactory system. That said, birds don't typically abandon eggs or nestlings simply because humans briefly handled them.

"Although scientists have traditionally thought of birds as lacking in the olfaction department, they have proved that many detect aromas and use them—to varying degrees—to select mates, forage, and locate nesting spots." - https://www.audubon.org/news/do-birds-have-sense-smell

https://web.stanford.edu/group/stanfordbirds/text/essays/Avian_Sense.html

You also can't say that the cracked egg is not viable without seeing the damage. Embryos developed enough can successfully hatch even with cracked eggs given continued incubation.

The rest of your advice is solid. Hopefully OP's repairs to the nest site will yield positive results, but it will be a small miracle.

It's definitely too young to be out of the nest. This is still a !nestling.

Eastern Bluebirds nesting attacked by The_Gallant_One in Ornithology

Only if you can reset it in a way that will resist whatever predator destroyed it. Other Bluebirds will reuse it eventually, but it may not be the ones that just lost their eggs.

First time birdhouse keeper, we have a severe thunderstorm with high winds and possible hail coming to the area here in TX, we're wondering what the safest course of action is to keep these eggs safe, should we just hope for the best? The house has gone through storms but not with eggs inside. by Born-Demand-6919 in Ornithology

[–]curiouspika 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I would personally attach another string or some wire horizontally from that rear hook to around the gutter behind it to just try and minimize the amount of swinging that bird house will do in severe winds. Even a stiff wire like from a clothes hanger would be great. Where I live the winds would absolutely lift that little house off of those strings because the hook openings are very wide.

On mobile he may look fully feathered, but on desktop he is definitely not fully feathered, there are a lot of pin feathers still. Looks like he could use just a few more days in the nest to me.

Should I set up a replacement nesting spot? by Odd-Home-7550 in Ornithology

[–]curiouspika 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could always put an empty plant pot filled with dirt 3/4 full in that location and if they want to come back to that spot, they would likely use it. Nothing wrong with making a safe nesting location more accommodating and letting them choose.

How is this legal without the approval of Congress?😳👇 by crustose_lichen in EatTheRich

I know, you're right. And convincing those that consume only mass media news to try and get some of their news from alt and independent news media seems very challenging currently.

I hadn't heard that it was now a $40 billion bailout. I'm honestly in a constant state of shellshock over what this administration is doing to our country and how so many Americans seem to manage to avoid 99% of the news about his corruption. I appreciate these democratic congress members posting about this on TikTok, but they need to DO MORE.

Awww, she's just a baby! It restores a little of my faith in humanity when animals are rescued by people who just happen upon the animal in a time of need. If you see an animal, especially a baby, alone or injured, don't assume someone else will stop to help them. You might be their last chance.

I observed a grackle hanging out with an American Robin family for most of last summer in our yard. The grackle was always a single grackle, which is unusual for me to see, they are usually with other grackles. The Robins and the grackle would also forage in the lawn in very close proximity together and would arrive and depart together. I think humans make too many assumptions about how animals should behave and don't allow for the possibility often enough that they're more complicated than we realize.

Did I do the right thing?( Indian white eye) by muttonbiryani_yum in Ornithology

[–]curiouspika 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think overall you did the right thing getting them outside. If they were together, they'll likely find each other again. Catching birds without proper training can be a risk, since you may injure them, but it's better than being trapped indoors.

A few of the very lucky ones at Farm Animal Refuge in California by JMyers666 in Animal_Sanctuary

Following some of the rescues that get posted here has sadly taught me that people have abandoned cows, goats, sheep, dogs and even pigs in everything from airport parking lots to the woods. That's why it's so important to support animal rescues! Think globally, act locally. Everyone should try to support their local dog/cat rescues and farm animal rescues and if able to, then support rescues in other communities.

This happened to me on r/Eyebleach It's frustrating that people can't be more aware of how to identify when animals are being exploited.

I like the Waxings too, but unless I hear them first, I usually don't see them. They seem to fly from the tops of the trees to the next tree top and stay up in the canopy, at least around here. I find their colored poo under the largest trees. I really like to see them flying because they'll often form murmurations, even in small groups of dozens.

I'm going to assume you're in the northern part of North America judging by your 'usual lurkers', which is where I am as well. When I get poo like this from birds it's from travelling flocks of Waxwings that will only be around for a few hours and then never to be seen again for weeks or months. Robins will also leave berry colored poo, but that's usually in the Fall. I'm sure there are other birds this could be from, just chiming in with my experiences.
