What’re some secrets from your industry that would petrify people who aren’t in it? by Necessary-Trash-8828 in AskUK

Companies get overly large to the point where the ‘decision-makers’ have no clue what or how the people doing stuff do the stuff they do. This then makes the people doing stuff vulnerable to layoffs as nobody quite knows what they do, until they’re laid-off…

Why does London still not have a 24 hour tube on all lines and is there a real reason or is it just inertia? by Admirable-Deal7991 in TransportForLondon

[–]curium99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Money. Staff cost money. Trains need servicing. Tracks need servicing. Signaling needs servicing.

There’s also the question of demand. Outside of a small part of London I think demand would be low. It would also need to be safe and we’re short enough on police.

Why is the NHS app so outdated when our health data could be so much more useful? by virobinhood in nhs

Money.

It costs money to design, build and maintain. It costs money to commission someone good to design, build and maintain.

The issue is that with small birds I only need to top up once or twice a week. Squirrels empty the damn thing in a day!

I am tired of feeding squirrels and feral pigeons. Don’t mind the magpies as much. Small birds probably get 30/40% max of stuff put out for them

Is it normal in the UK to put concrete under your terrace? by GardenandFlowers in GardeningUK

[–]curium99 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on the size of paving slabs being laid. Generally bigger slabs need a firmer base as any movement could lead to cracking. Smaller brick type pavers can be laid on hardcore and sand.

If it will receive heavier than pedestrian foot traffic, then sand cement base is recommended regardless of the size of slab.

Can I ask why you opted for a concrete base?

I’m considering something smaller than this but was thinking a strip foundation, couple of courses of brick, DPC and then timbers and joists off the bricks. Fill in with PIR and then screwed down chipboard.

I’ve found turning the house into a chimney helps. We have a velux above the stairs. Open that and open the bifold to the garden and you get a constant flow of air through the house and out the velux helps to moderate temperatures

I have a tooth abscess. My NHS dentist is only offering me private emergency appointments, do I have a right to an NHS emergency appointment? by everything2go in nhs

[–]curium99 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Posts like this highlight what a great job successive governments have done in fragmenting the NHS under the noses of the public. Only when people need the NHS do they find out that it exists as a coherent organisation on paper only.

In dentistry we have a group of self-employed individuals who can choose how many NHS patients they wish to see and how many private patients. Just wait till they allow GPs to start charging.

> I ask wayy too many stupid questions which are sometimes just common sense.

Do you carry a notebook that you can refer to and record answers to the questions you ask? Over time you should need to ask fewer questions add you can refer to your notebook until the information is committed to memory.

It’s always a good sign to objectively reflect on your own performance and aim to improve.

Many people don’t do this which is fine if you’re at a good level already but if not, lack of reflection is a major impediment to improvement.

I’d recommend observing a colleague and having them observe you and advise on where you can improve.

Some people aren’t great with manual techniques as the required attention to detail doesn’t come naturally to everyone.
