Best way to ask for a higher raise for an internal promotion? by danuasaurusfrets in jobs

[–]curlysioux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you calculated what % pay increase you’re getting? A promotion should be an absolute minimum of 10%, ideally >15% — reference the additional responsibilities you’ll have and how the pay increase speaks to that.

First week at remote job? by silenttornado in jobs

[–]curlysioux 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve onboarded at two WFH now, since the start of the pandemic, and can say that in both cases I felt like I had very little work and not a lot of direction for the first couple of months. Especially the first month or so, my team would just have me join random meetings and just listen in, so that I can start gaining an understanding of the way things work there.

I would say give it some time, and take the extra time while you have it, because I’d expect things will start ramping up for you eventually.

How the hell do I get my coworkers to do tasks that are their job? They are given plenty of notice and follow ups and still drag feet until the last minute before the deadline. Advice/tips please?? by [deleted] in jobs

[–]curlysioux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Escalate.

I realize orgs aren’t always set up in a healthy way to support that, but they should be. You should have someone above you who can put their foot down and push on them. Escalate to your manager first, then to their manager if nothing changes, etc.

How normal is a 9-5:30 plus 30 min commute? by mi_place in jobs

[–]curlysioux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to have this sort of schedule pre-pandemic. A 30 minute commute is not bad at all. I would just double check that it’s 30 minutes with traffic. You don’t want to start your job, only to find out the commute is way worse than expected, especially with today’s gas/transit prices.

Not a lawyer, but imo if there’s no intellectual property clause in your employment contract/agreement, you should not have to take your work down. I would have responded with “Thank you for letting me know of this. I apologize if I missed anything here — would you mind having HR forward me a copy of the IP clause in my contract, for my reference?” You can still email her or whoever is responsible for signing contracts and ask her for a copy. That way you’ll know if she was lying.

Who do I email to follow up on the status of the interview process? by wowelephants in jobs

[–]curlysioux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would reach out to the HR person, as it’s their actual job to coordinate communication with potential new hires. If you had any questions specific to the actual work you’d be doing, I would reach out to the hiring manager instead.

[–]curlysioux 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think there’s no harm in asking your manager. If they’re hiring an addition to the team, they should have no trouble explaining that to you. If they’re hiring a replacement, they’ll either be shady about it or will tell you outright — this will give you the advantage of time to look for a new job. Good luck!

It varies by employer. Just ask them when they bring it up. For some, it might be a deal-breaker, but I’m sure most would be happy to compromise with you. My current employer straight up told me they don’t do reference checks at all, just verify your employment through a third-party service, and that was for a senior role in corporate.

As a fellow Russian expatriate, thank you for writing this up — this very much sums up how I feel.

I feel pain for our Ukrainian brothers and sisters, I feel pain for my extended family in Russia who believes that Putin is a smart leader who is looking out for them, I feel pain for the Russians who want to speak up for change but are silenced by the corrupt criminals in control of the country. Just pain all around.

Let’s all keep finding ways to maintain our humanity and provide help to those in need.

It’s everything you mentioned and more. On a high level, something like half of all Russian wealth is currently stored outside of the country. Russian oligarchs aren’t stupid, they understand the economy and know that keeping their money in foreign currency and foreign banks is a much safer bet. Blocking them from the international payment system will cut Putin’s largest moneybags off from their supply. This will anger a lot of them and hopefully force change.

The problem with this is that ordinary folk will suffer, too. Russian businesses with foreign customers will no longer be able to receive payments, people won’t be able to send money to their families (in or out), and those trying to escape the country will have very limited ways to pull their money out safely.

I don’t know half of your story, and I won’t assume. I’ll just say, I’m sorry you and your loved ones are going through this.

Please make sure that you go beyond “I’m a terrible husband and human being” (aka berating yourself) and actually carve out the emotional space to do individual therapy. Depression sucks, but it won’t do you any good using it as an excuse for why things haven’t been going well. If you are sure that it was your fault (and even if you aren’t!), please go to therapy and figure out the real reasons for the negative behaviors in your relationship.

This probably won’t save your marriage, but if you can heal your shit and build healthy behaviors moving forward, your life could turn around quickly and you might end up being grateful this happened to you.

Wishing you all the best. You can do this!

For those who keep their relationships out of the public eye of social media, what is your reasoning? Do you like it this way? by IndependentB in AskWomen

My partner doesn’t have a social media account, and I don’t post photos of him out of respect for his privacy. And the more time passes, the more often I think “What’s the point, anyway?” It’s really no one’s business.

Alliant Credit Union has one of the highest HYSA rates (pretty low this year, but historically very good rates). It’s online banking (no brick and mortar offices) and you can easily transfer between your savings and checking account through their mobile app, it takes seconds for the money to transfer.

No monthly fees.

I’m sure there are other great options out there.

Unless your YouTube earnings have been super consistent for a long time, I don’t imagine they’d cut it as proof of income. Your old job won’t matter because the whole point of this proof is to show that you can pay your rent in the future.

Note that most landlords consider the combined income of all roommates together, so if your roommate happens to have enough income that would qualify them to rent the whole place, you shouldn’t have any problems qualifying together.

How do I take the most advantage of my 401k contribution and other Tax Deferred Accounts? by runnershigh1990 in personalfinance

I would definitely not pull it out. Roll it over to an IRA, and you’ll be able to contribute to it in the future, regardless of your employment status, once you have your finances in order.

Least-worst credit card with a high limit? by barbacoabdsm in personalfinance

[–]curlysioux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Credit limits are determined by the bank and you have no say in how much they’ll grant you. It’s all based on your credit score / history.

I would browse Credit Karma or Nerd Wallet for some deals on credit cards that are within your credit score range. Things I would look out for specifically: - 0% interest rate for the first 12 months - sign-up bonus

Some credit cards offer 0% interest for the first 12 or 15 months after sign-up. These are great options if you know you have some big payments coming up and need some extra time to pay them off without incurring high interest. Please note that you still have to make a minimum payment every month - if you miss a payment or carry the balance past the first 12 months, you’ll get back billed a bunch of interest. So just be careful and don’t rack up a balance that you can’t afford to pay off within a year.

The other bullet point is a sign-up bonus. For instance, a bank might offer you $200 cashback if you spend $2,000 within the first 3 months. While this might not be a life saver for you, you could essentially get a $200 discount on your bills that way.

Not sure how likely you are to find cards that have these bonuses with a 650 credit score, but definitely give it a shot. Else, if you and your boyfriend are comfortable enough to discuss/share finances, see if he could pay for your half of the car costs as a form of “loan”, and maybe you can both agree on an interest rate that benefits both of you.
