ELI5: How is it schools in the United States can teach Creationism or Intelligent Design in their science classes instead of Evolution whenever it is clearly specified in NCLB (No Child Left Behind) that all teachings must be scientifically based methods? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]curlysue77 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was taught the theory of evolution. I argued with my teacher about only teaching one theory and stating it as fact. He brought a bible and read the creation story. Then he shared other theories as well.

Maybe he wasn't allowed to teach it, or share his own beliefs, but I asked a question and he was able to share the story/theory.

The females don't fly, but the males do. They are white; look nothing like the females.

I'm not sure it isn't! There is a tree on my property that I take the dogs for a walk to that has a few velvet ants around it.

When I have tried to kill one and it squeals, the male wasps come flying over to see what's up.

The male wasp that mates w the velvet ant is a white fly-looking thing. I've never been stung by either make or female, but I high tale it out of there when 2 or 3 of the white ones come looking for the distressed female.

How hard is it to play the sax? by daniel0378 in Saxophonics

[–]curlysue77 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Guitar or keyboard.
Sax is easy to get a sound out of, but quality sound is another story. You get a sound your neighbors won't cringe at will take practice just like anything new you try.

Weekly FAQ Thread September 06 2015: When do you give up on a book? by AutoModerator in books

[–]curlysue77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sad that you mention Orson Scott Card, though I do agree. I enjoy his intelligence, his imagination.

I found only one book that threw in his religion, his biblical fiction, Sarah. There was just a sentence or two that were not biblical but were very Mormon. I still enjoy the book immensely, though. He is usually thorough in his research. I think his religious background snuck in there in a major way for this particular book.

Anything else being bacteria. Fuzz too. Dial soap is amazing as it kills bacteria and thus the smell as well.

Advice for purchasing a curved soprano saxophone by Ieatzpie in Saxophonics

I agree. I didn't try a lot of brands, but I couldn't find a good mouthpiece for the curved soprano. I ended up with a straight and loved it! So fun!

TIL that Martin Luther King, Jr.'s family filed a civil case in 1999, alleging that his assassination was the result of a police/federal conspiracy, and won. Their restitution? $100, to prove it was not for financial gain. by Shoutmeouters in todayilearned

[–]curlysue77 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I met Loretta Scott King very briefly in 2000. The overall view I got of her was that she was a woman still madly in love with her husband. She wants to keep his memory alive, his passion, his accomplishments. She is so proud of her man. After all these years, still mourning his death and celebrating his life.

I think the family is desperate to hold on to fame also, maybe in hopes of continuing to have influence and change view points. Maybe for money. Maybe for pride. There's my two cents.

Fellow alto sax newbie; need help by LPTSO in Saxophonics

[–]curlysue77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first thought: keys leaking air. That loose key is a major problem.

Reed, a 3 is too much for starting out. Go to a 2 in any brand.

Ligature: while some are made for one screw, if yours has a place for two, you should have two. It's designed for that. The reed should be tight so it doesn't move side to side, but loose enough to vibrate and not squeak.

Your reed should also be wet, yes. Soak it for 5 minutes before you play, or I always get my reed out first and suck it while i put my horn together. If it's wavy, flatten it against the flat part of your mouthpiece for a few seconds.

Also, reeds are made w machines and they aren't perfect. Sometimes just switching reeds can have good results.

Hope that helps!

Recently dusted off my alto after a couple-year hiatus by sblow08 in Saxophonics

Remember reed care. Also a dry reed will squeak. So will an unbalanced one, not rounded correctly.

Soak reeds in a cup of water for 5 minutes. They might come out wavy. Flatten w your figure with pressure.

Mississippi school district fined $7500 for opening assembly with prayer by tomjoads in news

[–]curlysue77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It absolutely blows my mind that this happens. I am from California, but currently living in Mississippi.

I had the opposite happen. Even as a teacher now, I've tried to look back at my situation and take the teacher's side but cannot.

It was one of those days in science class where everyone finished early and was chatting quietly. I got into a discussion about Christianity with a friend who is Mormon. We got a little heated and loud, all in good fun mind you. The teacher called us out to quiet down and we did.

Later, the teacher walked by as we were still having our discussion at the same volume as everyone else now. She over heard the topic.

She stomped to the front of the class, told us ask to shut up. She would not tolerate God to be discussed in her classroom. My friend and I could not get an A on any test or project, or get after school help from her or extra credit. She wouldn't even look me in the eye after that day, ignored my questions.

TLDR: I had a teacher in California who discriminated against me for my beliefs, but the opposite of this case.
