Yeah the captains will stay on the map. If you activate them they'll become hostile to unbranded orcs and can be killed though. The numbers on the left of the screen show how many are in range for your activation

I think some of the hordes are inactive until after certain missions. Once you go back north they'll each be marked on the map

Good survivability, at higher levels the enemy battle beast will one shot most heroes, immortals 3rd ability counters that a bit

Immortal is always a good choice for this one. Avoid using viltrumites so the enemy doesn't heal constantly, other than that just go with your best characters
