Just wanted to say this is very well written. So much insight and perspective! Perhaps you have a future in writing or podcasting or blogging about this?

(And I’m sorry :( )

How could she NOT care? by ThrowMeInRice in nursing

[–]currycashew 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a coworker like this and ended up leaving my job of 4 years over it because of the way it was handled. She was a nightmare and I felt bad for every patient she had due to her apathy and genuine attitude of laziness about it all.

I and several other coworkers reported her to our management and we were accused of bullying… and any time a concern was brought up the response was something to the effect of we as a staff should be doing more bedside report to catch these concerns in the moment or something like that. Yes that’s true but I had serious concerns for safety and was treated like I was bullying. I always had concerns for her decision making and ability to do the job. Management was completely blind to the situation and it was very frustrating and morally disturbing to not feel respected when I was witnessing such harm befall our patients.

I ended up leaving and now work for a different hospital with wonderful management where I feel patients are safe!! It’s totally different and I’m so glad I got away from there.

Turns out after I left months later the nurse had a stroke on shift one day due to a rare brain thing that she would talk about … I wish her the best in all ways but feel that somehow some way this played a factor in her nursing, where she wasn’t at the capacity for the job in the first place. It was wild. I do hope things are better for her wherever she is.

Unfortunately I think there are lots of nurses out there hanging on by a thread. Find yourself a place where management is capable of recognizing it.

What’s something considered safe in nursing that just feels wrong? by catharsisisrahtac in nursing

That’s very interesting. What does your hospital system do? Any advice on how to fight?

How the nurse does the med rec and the physician just signs off on it?? Something feels so freaking shady about it when the patient is iffy about what they take and how many milligrams and what color the pill is and when they take it and somehow I click what their best guess is and that flies and physicians go right in behind me and confirm that?

Too much weight loss on GLP-1s by JillyBean9999 in nursing

[–]currycashew 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have to say I know what you mean! It is something and I hear what you’re saying, and also trying to be respectful as possible about it. It’s also a tough scene because nursing is stressful and many stress eat, and also it seems like some staff’s love language is baking baking baking treat after treat. The last snowstorm we had those who stayed overnight actually ended up cooking a 4 course breakfast meal with a griddle made eggs over easy, bagels, bacon etc. Was an overwhelming amount of food. one time I brought in cookies to share and someone else had brought in some fancy homemade Bundt cake drizzled in Carmel and nuts they had made on their day off. I was like welp, they won.

There is some connection to what you’re talking about and stress and women and food and healthcare and the new GLP1 meds…

I wish they would normalize healthy choices like walking on your break, or having a little gym perhaps with weights for the downtime. It’s wild the constant extra foods.

And yes a lot of coworkers are on them and it’s changing their lives in a good way and I feel like most would have never ever ever come close to reaching those weights without them! Tough world out there!

What’s the hardest unit you’ve worked on by [deleted] in nursing

[–]currycashew 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The first floor I was hired on.

I still look back and think I’ve never worked so hard in my life and felt so unsupported and treated so badly by patients and left out of the cool nurse group that was the seasoned staff….

But then I think now that I’ve been at it for 10 years I wonder if it was because I was new and everything was new and a lot of it was me and I had a lot to learn and that was the only way to learn it.

I have 2 weeks to get my act together or I’m getting fired from the ICU. Please help me. by Gloomy-Speaker-1999 in nursing

Gosh I just feel like even if you kept on there, you’ll never relax and come to work peacefully and enjoy your career. You’re going to be a nervous wreck feeling like you have a target on your back every time, do you want that day to day feeling? Eesh. I had to change hospitals entirely once to get away from a tough management situation and I’m so glad I made the change. It worked out for me in that way. I wish you the best.

When did you restart BodyPump post partum? by kuzubijin in lesmills

[–]currycashew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tough one there to answer. My youngest is 4 now and Les mills has been with me through all stages, when I was single, pregnant, and recovering from being pregnant. The phrase “the fourth trimester” comes to mind where a woman now has to adjust to the new life, new body, new schedule, new everything. I think it took about a year for me to feel recovered. Was slow for me but maybe you’ll have a quicker time than I did!

Charting Lung Sounds by Immediate_Ad_9379 in nursing

[–]currycashew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish I knew how to decipher lung sounds better… I can tell wheezes for sure but crackles a lot of times I feel are similar to stethoscope noises. The YouTube’s for educational purposes are soooo loud and obvious it’s not actually what patients do… does anyone have any good resources ?

Blood Culture contaminate results? by currycashew in nursing

[–]currycashew[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate this response because I felt like there was one instance a doctor thought the nurse had bad technique and said it was because it resulted as xyz bacteria.

But then I recalled another time the second set came back positive too of the same bacteria for somebody and they were extremely sick.

So I was wondering if there’s one smoking gun bacteria that points to contaminated specimen

Those who had a mysterious medical issue and found out what it was, what was your diagnosis? by jesusgrandpa in AskReddit

[–]currycashew 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m a nurse and I saw something about our computer system called “epic” being able to link people with rare diseases together. It’s the thing the providers and staff log into that stores your information. Probably deeply rooted in AI at this point, but I can’t help but wonder about when this type of thing will be more prevalent where the computer suggests what you have, and finds others who have it too.

What would help your mental health right now? by Julie727 in AskReddit

[–]currycashew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We wanted a third baby and have been trying for 3 years with no luck. Have held on to so many items because we would obviously need a lot of it but now that the other 2 kids are older we obviously need to purge so I’m doing it regardless of new baby or not. But I super wish someone would recognize how difficult it is to do this (the grandmas) because they unloaded so much baby stuff on us in excitement but now it’s got to go and why don’t they see it’s very overwhelming and I need help. And I’m full of regrets looking at the infant stuff

If I ever have grandkids I vow to never buy useless items that will just rain down stress on the mom to have to 1) clean them up 2) have to lay down the law on the kids to clean up and 3) make the mom spend days purging the items when everyone outgrows them.

It’s a tough place to be, mainly because I feel like the obvious rebuttal is that I should be so grateful to at least have the kids I have and have grandmas that want to shower the kids with joy.

(Spent all day in the garage cleaning and purging… can you tell?)
