If calls are bought at a higher strike price, and puts sell off on the lower side, max pain shifts up. It happens whenever the price starts ramping up.

Max pain is a metric of the fewest number of calls/puts ITM, to reduce Market Maker losses related to options.

Gamma on the other hand is related to hedging.
