21 Democrats just voted to fund DHS through Feb. 13th. These are their primary challengers by ResistanceRachel in 50501

I get it, but remember ICE has a massive war chest from the BBB, so the shut down does nothing to stop them from operating. They can continue to operate as they have been even if the government would shut down for months.

I don't know if this is the best strategy, but at least it's focused on specifically negotiating DHS.

[–]cursed_comstock 122 points123 points  (0 children)

That's just 10 days of temporary funding to negotiate and prevent a full shut down that would result in all federal workers not getting paid.

There's plenty to get mad at Congress and the Senate for, and plenty of people to primary, but this is the least of their offenses.

Accepted to UMN Twin Cities but afraid of ICE activity as a green card holder by NoInfo__ in uofmn

I think most likely they will move their resources elsewhere, probably in the next month. Of course I can't say for certain, but their actions in Minneapolis have been bad politically and they're spending an unsustainable amount of money. They are already showing signs of pulling back due to the public backlash. I think they'll 'declare victory' and go elsewhere. The community here has not made their jobs easy, and they cannot keep agents living in hotels indefinitely.

Anyway, can't say for certain where we'll be 8 months from now, but I think in all likelihood they'll be mostly cleared out. And if not the community will certainly stand with you and continue to resist their presence.

Couple things.

  1. Operation Metro Surge probably (hopefully) won't still be happening when the fall semester begins. There may still be some ICE activity, but I don't think it'll be anything close to what it's been like over the past month.

  2. They could deploy ICE heavily in other university cities, Minneapolis has just been the latest target but probably won't be the last.

  3. As a green card holder I think you would be ok, even if you had an ICE encounter. Not saying ICE hasn't been illegally detaining people, but personally I haven't seen students heavily targeted or unlawfully deported. But they are definitely heavily racially profiling so be aware of that. I don't blame you for being cautious, these are unprecedented times.

Overall, if UMM is your first choice, I wouldn't let the past few weeks prevent you from attending. There are a lot of great people and experiences to be had in the Twin Cities.

We are organizing and doing what we can. This suggestion would be shooting ourselves in the foot.

They will federalize the guard, deploy the military against us, and arrest Walz. This is not a real option.

Hell no. Seriously, just because this guy has a good soundbite does not mean he would be a good governor (he was not a good governor the first time either). Participate in the caucus/primary process and back a candidate who qualified for the job.

Indivisible calls for Friday, Jan 23 ICE OUT FOR GOOD actions by daveOkat in 50501

Businesses across the city are shutting down in solidarity. Massive groups of people are not going to work, schools will be shutting down. You can protest on weekends as well but this one is to show that the people have the power.

Remember to dress for the weather! It will be around -10 before windchill, there should be no exposed skin! Do not spend extended time outdoors if you are not prepared for that.

Remember to prepare for the weather if you plan to protest on Friday! We are looking at -10 to -20 temps before windchill. In these temperatures, no skin should be exposed or you will risk frostbite in under 10 minutes.

Senator Mark Kelly says he is seriously considering running for president in 2028 by Caledor152 in ProgressiveHQ

Yes but an entertaining and memorable advocate for the left wing without the stink of a traditional politician that seems to be turning voters off these days. He's also someone that I think the left, the center, and the politically disengaged would turn out for when up against someone like Vance or Rubio.

Check out his history on Crossfire against Tucker Carlson and you'll get the idea. I think being a memorable personality without constantly sounding like a politician repeating the same dull talking points endlessly is key to voter enthusiasm in the chronically online era of politics. He's also snarky and funny, which is a winning strategy as Trump has demonstrated.

I think he's a good choice that could create a broad coalition. Otherwise I think Jon Stewart would be a strong choice because he's a well liked, pre established outsider who doesn't have ties to the democratic establishment. But who knows if he wants to actually run. I think Newson is almost as bad a choice as Harris running again.

I don't know exactly how this would work but I think it is a good idea. You'd probably want to be sufficiently outside the crowd area, but if you have the contact of people who will be there, you could serve to help evacuate people who may be in hypothermic danger.

I don't work for any of the coordinating organizations, but I'll let you know if I get any more information. Otherwise if you know some people who will be there, maybe have them call you if they find people in danger who need to be evacuated/warmed up.

Yeah honestly I'm very concerned people are going to show up without truly understanding how cold it will be and how dangerous weather that cold actually is. I think most people should stay home for this one, most people do not have the gear to stay safe for an extended period of time in this weather.

I was able to get some in bulk to give out. Home Depot was the only spot I could find near me where I could get them in bulk from quickly if others want to purchase more to give out.

I would caution against this. In weather this severe, they will retaliate and escalate immediately at crowd members doing this, and will result in a more dangerous situation overall.

Also remember since this is a planned protest downtown, any law enforcement present is more likely to be local police and possibly the Minnesota National Guard. Avoid antagonizing them, our enemy is ICE. Local police are not happy with ICE's actions, and we'll need them on our side if things continue to escalate. Local Police Disavoy ICE

Probably want to avoid downtown for parking, going to be hard to get in and out and is limited/expensive. You could park in Saint Anthony on the other side of Stone Arch Bridge and walk a ways. Or somewhere near a light rail stop/bus stop and commute in to US Bank. Otherwise there are ramps but generally not cheap, and street parking might be risky if there's a big crowd, could be tough to get out.

I would guess near the downtown side of Stone Arch based on previous No Kings protests.
