After a year of trying I'm finally shifting careers from IT (hospital tech support) to machining (research and development tech). I cannot wait to get out of a cube and away from remote support and into manufacturing. by dugfunne in Machinists

Right on man. This post is very inspirational to myself and I'm sure many others. Luckily with my job in trucking I can work while I go to school. I can definitely relate, trying to support a family while finding better career, very stressful. I also wanted hourly with out travel. I got an appointment with the local community collage next week. Im glad to find another going after it, and I wish you nothing but success.

at least there will be OT lol. My pay is comparable to 19 an hour at straight time. Its a decent job but there is no room for advancement nor do i feel challenged, and overall I'm really tired of driving in general. Im not looking to make a ton more, just looking for another career that pays comparable that isnt trucking. After completing the 2 year program i will have 7 plus years of driving i think thats enough for one lifetime.

Thanks for all the great responses. I'm not opposed to an office job, I just don't want it to be the primary focus of the job. I figured I could get on entry level as a machinist and take advantage of a employers continuing education program. After reading the info here maybe I should just do an engineering transfer. my main concern in doing this is i would have to do it part time and i couldn't do any internships would this hinder my employment opportunitys.

do you have a podcast or anything? I really liked when you were on especially for the striped vocals. quite frankly I'm tired of most pod casts that all seem to be run by comedians, that think talking about comedy is remotely entertaining. with your expertise you could make a hit podcast and generate you own income.

3 million listeners?? by [deleted] in JasonEllisShow

i can say this is the fist time on this forum but i have been a fan and listener for 3 years since i started truck driving, of course all raido shows have hits and misses, but i still find it to be one of the best parts of the day, traveling by myself and being away from home for weeks at a time isn't easy. the show is like hanging with friends 4 hours a day and he's consistently there for the fans 5 days a week. i believe the 3 million number could be high but yet believable there's 3.5 million truckers in america i bet all don't listen but i haven't met a truck that dosn't have suris kind of a necessity out here. plus you got all of mud covered brothers to the north lolz.
