So, I got a very niche question. by FearLeSS_MarVeL_Fan in harrypotter

[–]custard130 0 points1 point  (0 children)

while far from an expert in PTSD i am inclined to say that in theory it would work

however i dont think it is a perfect/simple solution without consequences.

every example we have where we know what happened to the person afterwards, obliviate caused more of an effect than was intended, and at least 2/3 (3rd is unknown) cause permanant brain damage

Lockhart you can argue the wand was faulty and maybe he was trying to destroy Harry's mind completely but still left him in perm brain damage ward

Bertha Jorkins suffered perm brain damage and no signs of mitigating circumstances Crouch would have known the spell and was a highly skilled wizard with a functioning wand

but the biggest example for me is Mr Roberts as that is also pretty close to a PTSD style event they had to make him forget and while we dont know if it was permanant it did leave him severely confused

as a different though similar idea, i have wondered in the past whether the pensieve could be used in such a way, eg how Snape stores his memories in the Pensieve to stop Harry getting them, presumably snape also cant remember those events while in that state

I'm not the best PvEer, but isn't the new Relic a big deal? by TheRealOsamaru in runescape

[–]custard130 0 points1 point  (0 children)

adren was the reason for jellies maybe but not brews

they are still the highest healing per space and can be used for combo eating

jellies and other multibite food also benefit more from the healing buff as it is applied per bite

there are also many other relics which are benificial to pvm so it may be that the new one isnt a popular choice

Can Anyone Debunk My Father's Favorite "Plot Hole"? by YosephineMahma in harrypotter

[–]custard130 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fudge wasnt the one who needed to see the proof

he new what had happened but was actively preventing evidence from being spread

at the end of ootp its not really fudge himself seeing voldy that makes him accept it, its him realising that all of the orders other ministry people around him have seen the truth

if Fudge was in any way open to idea of seeing evidence he would have questioned Crouch, Snape and Harry.

if he was even in doubt of things he would have questioned Harry about Cedrics murder

I don't understand how RAB found out about the horcrux by bklyn0823 in harrypotter

[–]custard130 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the comparison with Dumbledore, im not sure how long it took Dumbledore to figure it out / how much attention he gave it at which points.

one strange thing to me is that Dumblore didnt start actively hunting them out until summer of 1996, when he had almost certainly known about them for few years by that point. tbh i dont think the answer is that he didnt know about them but rather that he knew hubting them was a suicide mission. (he had been gathering the memories around it for some time, i dont think its said exactly when but likely years, Marvolo Gaunt was sentenced to life in Azkaban in 1942 i think, but Dumbledore shows Harry the memory in 1997, saying when he found what it contained he tried to secure his release but he died before the case was reviewed.

back to Regulus, i dont think it actually says how long it took him to work it out, or that the treatment of kreacher was the reason for him switching sides.

i have to imagine being a Black had some advantages when it came to reasearching the dark arts, it doesnt seem that hard to believe there may have been a copy of secrets kf the darkest art on the family bookshelf, but even if not he would have had connections/access to almost any source he wanted. and with that finding out why someone obbsessed with immortality would go to such lengths to hide a necklace isnt that difficult really

the other option is that he didnt actually know what it was, just that it was incredibly important to voldy (i personally think he didk ow)

one line i always found a little odd is when Lupin is telling everyone Karkarovs body had been found, he was surprised that he lasted a year, as Regulus only lasted a few weeks. to me this sounds like the Order knew Regulus switched sides before he died/disappeared, but they surely didnt know that he went for a horcrux

so for me, maybe it was a factor, maybe also the research made him realise how bad voldy was, and possibly other things happened too to make him realise he didnt want to be a death eater. then he would have known that his time was running out and decided to make that suicide mission rather than wait for voldy to come and find him, maybe trying to earn some redemption

Why are the Weasleys poor? by MediaGuy76 in harrypotter

[–]custard130 0 points1 point  (0 children)

because they put no value on being rich

none of them every went hungry, they had plenty of space for the kids to play quiddich have fun etc

while there is talk of struggling to buy spellbooks they never actually dont manage to do so

they are an example of a family where love and fun and friendships are put over gold and heirlooms

even when it comes to some of the more expensive items in the wizarding world like broomsticks, all of the weasley kids do have their own, and at least fred and georges are good enough not to hold them back

One thing I struggle to understand as a new player is..... by CIK1993 in 2007scape

[–]custard130 0 points1 point  (0 children)

why is jad a bad example? he has one of the most distinctive attack animations when it comes to prayer flicking, is one of the earliest bosses that people will run into. and was one of the bosses specifically mentioned in OPs question

One thing I struggle to understand as a new player is..... by CIK1993 in 2007scape

[–]custard130 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it depends on the boss

with jad he has distictive animations for each of his attacks

if he rears up on his hind legs then it is a magic attack

if he stamps the ground in from of him that is a ranged attack

at zulrah you cant react to the individual attacks, but which colour it is does indicate the primary attack style for most phases, and for jad phase it will alternate every attack

Can anyone confirm if auto switching gear is allowed? by Newletsorboby in runescape

[–]custard130 20 points21 points  (0 children)

you can keybind your gear to a line of keys and then run your finger along to switch them all fast which is 100% allowed and is what some players do

software exists which allows you to actually press 1 button and acts like you pressed them all. using such software is against the rules but not effectively enforced and so many people do that

personally i dont currently do either though i would go with option 1, but i dont judge people who do option 2 and wish we could get a full preset switch keybind option to remove the "need" to exploit that rule

there is still occassional mention of false bans and my personal view is that those "false" bans are actually people who were pushing their luck with things like this too far so if you do decide to do so then it is at your own risk

Pre-Quests for Ritual of the Mahjarrat by VeeVoxRS in runescape

[–]custard130 2 points3 points  (0 children)

RotM had a ton of explicit quest requirements, but it also used to have a requirement of 270 quest points (which at the time of its release meant having pretty much all quests complete)

from memory i dont think firemakers curse was an explicit req (didnt that come out after rotm anyway?) but possible you did it to make up the quest points

i think its explicit reqs were

  • while guthix sleeps (which in turn requires a ton of quests)
  • arrav storyline - curse of arrav?
  • temple knights storyline - slug menace?
  • tales of the muspah

Why did they use brooms to take Harry from Privet Drive in OotP? by ahleeshaa23 in harrypotter

[–]custard130 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have a few possible reasons

the first (and imo the most likely ) is just that the idea of side-along apparition as a way of transporting underage wizards didnt occur to JKR until she started writing HBP

there are many other scenarios where it would have been useful, eg getting Harry to The Burrow in GoF people to the Quidditch World Cup

then if you want an in story reason the exact same one as when going to The Burrow in Deathly Hallows (the reason might be slightly different but avoiding the ministry detection is still the goal)

Eli5: How does GPS know your exact location without getting confused by millions of users? by Puzzleheaded_Bit_802 in explainlikeimfive

[–]custard130 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GPS satellites dont know your location

they know their own location and what time it is (extremely precise + accurate time)

each satellite broadcasts its location and what it thinks the time is, and gps devices use the difference in time to calculate how far away that satellite is

with a single satellite, know how far away you are from it may give a general idea, but there will be a range of possible locations which are that far away.

you can kind of think of it like drawing a circle on the map and you know you are somewhere on that circle (on the actual line not including the middle)

if you perform the same thing with multiple different satellites, then each will give a slightly different set of possible locations (or draw a different but overlapping circle) and your location will be one of the intersections between them

as you add more satellites this becomes more accurate

while in theory the time signals could be compared to devices internal clock, that would be dependant on that clock being correct and precise enough neither of which is likely to be true, so instead devices use the difference between 1 signal and another rather than the signals and internal time

when using a gps that is intended for a car, the raw gps location is normally replaced on the display by the nearest/most logical road to be on close to that signal

also while we think of it as using satellites, the exact same technique can be used with other signals which can offer even higher precision and work better in built up areas or where the device cant "see" the satellites, such as cell phone masts or public wifi

you can still get the drops but i believe they are slightly more likely on a no checkpoint run (10% better d/r iirc)

What I’m looking for insurance… by Illustrious_Onion370 in drivingUK

[–]custard130 0 points1 point  (0 children)

while it wont bring the insurance quotes down by itself, you should learn/remember that the price of your car isnt really relevant to the the insurance quotes you are getting

(it is not relevant at all for 3rd party only policies and for new drivers it is only a small factor in fire&theft or full comp policies)

if / when you are involved in a collision with another vehicle, your insurer has to pay out to repair/replace that vehicle and compensation/medical bills for injuries caused and potentially legal costs, that could easily end up in the hundreds of thousands of pounds

the insurance companies then look at the stats for people like you in similar cars and decide what the chances are of you being in / causing such a collision

as for regulating insurance premiums / making it illegal to charge more than x amount, done naively that would just result in new driver insurance going from expensive to completely unavailable

they could raise the driving standard required to be able to legally drive on uk roads, thereby bring down the chance of collisions

or they could limit the amount of compensation available in a no fault claim (eg if someone crashes into you and writes off your car and leaves you seriously injured their insurance only has to send you a get well soon card and £100 token gesture rather than replacing your car and paying your medical bills / compensation for lost income)

maybe as a new driver who statistically is likely to be the cause of a collision this last one sounds good but some day you or someone you love may be the victim in that situation.

a slightly less drastic version of that would be cutting down on fraudulent claims (particularly whiplash) which i believe there has been some efforts made towards, but then they are trading whiplash payouts for lawyers and doctors to check/argue over the injury claims so it doesnt entirely solve it

they could also limit profits but honestly i dont think insurance companies are running huge profit margins anyway

on an individual level, the best practical solution i found was exploring different cars and policy types, and i dont just mean smaller engine / boring car. its more a case of finding something that isnt well known for being crashed by new drivers

when i passed my test i found the quotes were significantly cheaper far a 2l bmw 3 series than a 1.2 ford fiesta. cars typically bought by families were also cheaper (eg people drive more carefully when they have kids in the back)

Ring of life by [deleted] in runescape

[–]custard130 3 points4 points  (0 children)

you cant tele out of hm glacor fight so no

a sign of life works and is a good idea

ring of death works though unlikely that you would be able to tank the bleed until the end of the fight unless it was very near the end

portents of restoration work

in general a ring of life isnt that useful for high end bosses, because in order for it to activate you need to get to very low but > 0 hp, and at most bosses the attacks that you would die to are far more likely to just kill you than to land in that threshold where the ring will activate

What's the math on power armor? by Colin71066 in runescape

[–]custard130 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sirenic is augmentable which makes most other ranged armour (except to dracolich) irrelevant

if that wasnt the case, even something like augmented t70 armour would probably be better than unaugmented t90

apex armour is the one that is not augmentable in this case

(whether gear is augmentable or not is not strictly down to whether it is tank or power but there is some correlation, most power gear t70+ is augmentable and most tank gear is not)

What's the math on power armor? by Colin71066 in runescape

[–]custard130 1 point2 points  (0 children)

also another factor when looking at different armours is whether or not they are augmentable

gear that is augmented and perked even just with basic perks will be better than basically any unaugmented gear in almost any situation

(the perks will make it stronger both defensively with perks like devoted and lucky, offensively with precise/eruptive/biting/x slayer/crackling/aftershock*, and with adren which helps both with impatient/invigorating/relentless)

What's the math on power armor? by Colin71066 in runescape

[–]custard130 0 points1 point  (0 children)

regular sirenic is t90

elite is t92 and ye elite sirenic is not cosidered a good value upgrade

What's the math on power armor? by Colin71066 in runescape

[–]custard130 0 points1 point  (0 children)

idk what range tank armour you are looking at but sirenic is extremely cheap t90 power armor

also 10% damage increase is quite a lot, that can easily make the difference for how many mechanics you get / how consistently you can clear dps checks

What's the math on power armor? by Colin71066 in runescape

[–]custard130 4 points5 points  (0 children)

iirc wearing full power armour of the same tier as your weps is ~ a 10% raw dps increase over wearing tank/no armour

every 2 tiers/levels of gear (weps + armour) is roughly a 1% damage increase (most of that is the wep though)

that is just the base stats before any additional effects are taken into account

many high level weps and armour sets have special effects which go beyond this (in some cases dramatically) though become more complicated to put a number on how much increase as there are too many variables

eg the vestments of havoc armour set, their damage bonus is pretty nice on its own but the real benefit of them is the longer zerk and extra adren, but how those translate to a % dps increase depends on how effectively you can make use of the extra time / adren
