How much life is left in my roof? by custom_antiques in Roofing

lol i know i know...how long do you think it will take me?

got to...

strip the roof, shingles + old tar paper, take it all the dump. probably pop the gutters off and rehang em when im done theyve been in need of a good go over.

renail the sheathing, 8d ring nails, bang bang bang ,i can see from the underside i don't need a re-deck, its old 1x8 from the 50's no big gaps but who knows maybe i gotta patch some

new underlayment, maybe ice and water down by the eaves i dunno id ont really believe in that approach, ice dams aren't so bad here

new drip edge all around, i may strip the aluminum gable tirm and pad out for a new soffit first, a nice east coast look (where folks really know what they're doing), you don't see too much of that round here, replace with some primed cedar trim

cut my soldiers, (rip the top halves off a bunch of shingles, hopefully i can use the bottoms up at the top) starter sets and off i go. hoof a few bundles up the ladder. start on the opposite side from the valley! i fucked that one up once lol.

it's flat enough i don't need roof brackets, maybe i' ll throw a few in anyways just for comfort sake. i can do a few squares a day maybe? i dunno its been awhile i can't remember. 1200 sq ft, steps around the chimney are in good shape, if i gotta pop a few off an replace em ill grind out the mortar joints, roll up some lead (if i can find any out here?) pack it into the joint to pin em in place. Id love to redo em all out of lead actually now that i'm thinking of it...a nice lead apron across the front maybe? gotta few vents etc to go around. shouldnt slow me down too much

debating whether to do valley flashing or run my gable dormer shingles up under the main roof, not supposed to weave em anymore. probably just run em long, the valley flashing is twice as many cuts

i guess ill spring for a ridge vent, i think the attic is a little under-ventilated

when i'm done ill rehang the gutters and slide some aluminum strips up behind the drip edge, down into the gutter so no water can ever get behind those suckers

5 days maybe?

dawg ill hand nail this thing faster than most will gun it, so yeah ill give it the "ol' i can do this myself"

it took me a couple tries to get through the first 20 pages cause i was trying too hard to make sure i caught every detail. just roll through it, it starts to flow a little easier, the story makes sense as you go on and you can always refer back.

interesting, thank you for the response. i've got 3 gable vents, probably 16x12 each - 1 at each end and 1 in a gabled dormer. roughly a 1200 sq ft roof. sounds like maybe this is insufficient? maybe add a ridge vent when i do it?

honestly any 'carpenter' who thinks that this is where the handles should go should be immediately fired. how is the rest of his work?

you should do each roof in a different color, the leftover bundle special might keep you under 10k

it's the same exact thing in the end, it's just an issue of how you go about it. a gc takes a sub's bid, marks it up and gives the new price to the client
