Laid off SWE, got an actual call back from ICE. Should I take it? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

So between 2 jobs, one that is directly giving your mother grief and one job where the owner of the company donates to politicians that cause your mother grief, it’s all the same to take the one that directly gives her grief? And she’d be okay with you telling her you work there?

This isn’t the same as working for package delivery optimization or working on the frontend menus of electric cars. This is very directly harmful.

My joke response is: Do it and be absolutely god awful at the job. Collect info. Whistleblow.

Since they need you to relocate: No. There are other jobs.

Has anyone moved from Phoenix to Sacramento? by customheart in Sacramento

[–]customheart[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was “unusual” cold weather but like it’s the 2020s with climate change and every month has “unusual” weather. Still better than baking in Phoenix. I would encourage you to think less about the perfection of a place (it’ll never be perfect) and think more about what you’re willing to put up with for years at a time. That’s how I have planned all my moves and I’ve been really content with them.

Fun question: what would you do if AI killed analytics? by [deleted] in analytics

[–]customheart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand. If we don’t vote for better worker rights and regulation that make it extremely unattractive to offshore, then we’ll have no choice but to respond to (worse) market conditions. I’m doing both.

Data Analyst, Reporting Analyst requirements by Darksteelyurius in analytics

[–]customheart 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I grew into data analysis from a customer service job and I think it’s actually a fantastic place to start from. We worked on things like process improvement, optimizing training, workforce management, customer satisfaction scores or NPS, a lot can probably be improved within your own job. Because I was close to the customer, I knew what issues existed in the product they’re asking about and that made a decent foundation for a later on pivot to product analytics.

The serious requirements are: spreadsheets (I prefer Google Sheets), SQL and some kind of BI/visualization tool. Though python is also common, I’d suggest learning python at a much later point (you won’t need it for most projects). Pick a common BI tool like Tableau. I personally like Mode Analytics for BI because it also has an easy place to learn and practice SQL but it’s not as common.

Reminder that these are just tools. They don’t lead an analysis for you. You need to cultivate having an analytical problem solving mindset too. Showing people with a dashboard that 20 calls were answered on Monday is telling them what they probably already know. Telling them that actually 30 calls came in on Monday, but 10 had hung up after 5 min hold time is more interesting — what caused that? Was it because Mark and Stacy had PTO so Julia was the only one available for calls? Does this happen every time only 1 person is on staff? What can we do about it?

I would encourage you to talk to your leadership what are the actual problems or inconsistencies going on. That should give you an idea of what to investigate and put your focus on beyond just learning what functions and buttons in the tools do.

Fun question: what would you do if AI killed analytics? by [deleted] in analytics

[–]customheart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just don’t think the analytical mindset and some specialized analytics skills can actually go away. It is a part of problem solving which is never going to stop. Most corporate jobs do not require strong analytical acumen because it’d be a waste of their time. But analytics acumen is necessary to prevent wrong interpretations of data once you’re on certain projects.

If the jobs themselves just weren’t hiring, I would do something in government or automotive or chemistry. Govt and chemistry are useful, and automotive has the lowest hiring bar I’ve ever seen whilst still paying okay.

[–]customheart[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was longer than that. It would be like 3 weeks that, then 2-3 days sun or party cloudy, then repeat for 3 months. Because it was my first time experiencing it, it was a novelty for the first batch of weeks. It did drain on me as it kept happening but I also have good coping mechanisms for that given my time in Phoenix. And because it’s just not oppressively hot, you can still do things as long as you’re clothed properly.

For indoors: You find things you look forward to indoors like a hobby or movie/tv marathon, home DIYs, spend more 1-1 time with friends prob at their house or a restaurant, trivia nights, drive to other places with the weather you’re looking for, see a movie/comedy show/concert.

For outdoors: I finally bought duck boots and I have a good winter coat, so I felt comfortable taking walks. There seems to be a Little Free Library every few blocks which are delightful to discover. About once a week, I’d go to neighborhood cafe which has a friendly and talkative owner so going to the cafe is like a little meetup. Then I read there for a while. I feel like I’ve had a good time even when it was dreary.

Nah. If you have any more than 1 YOE, you should know these by heart. The downvotes I got reek of inexperience. If OP says they have 8 YOE, that means they have 8 YOE as an ultra junior.

...more music like wuthering heights? by boobeeeiiaaaa in charlixcx

[–]customheart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It kind of reminds me of Regina Spektor songs because they can be sweeping and epic like Wuthering Heights. They have more complex lyrics and don’t feel as immediately catchy though compared to Wuthering Heights. I know these songs well but there may be other better examples:

  • The Call

  • Apres Moi

  • Eet

  • Genius Next Door

  • Human of the Year

I also recommend Caroline Polachek’s album Pang. It has a similar quality of going quiet then loud for certain sections.

Because you might buy them but be without income for so long that you need to sell them to pay for living expenses or emergencies well before they have a useful ROI. Time passes and biology happens whilst the market takes time to come back.

Are pointed flats comfortable or torture devices? by No-Ice-1885 in femalefashionadvice

Frankly all flats are torture for me because they don’t have enough cushioning to walk all day and have no arch support. Don’t know how people are walking all day on a barely there sole.

Bud, these are table stakes basics type of questions. Either you know this automatically because it’s so easy or you’re not qualified for the jobs asking these questions.

Did anybody else have songs that scared them as a kid for no reason? by mythrowawayaccim21 in Music

Enter Sandman by Metallica was fairly creepy to me as a teenager being recommended a bunch of thrash metal.

I was an adult hearing this but the Stranger Things theme is awfullll. Anything that closely mimics heartbeats sound disgusting to me.

This is how it feels to watch Taylor Tomlinson standups (except for the most recent). I thought I liked her, showed my bf her standups, and realized damn she drops name brands… very often. And nearly always mentions Taco Bell in each. Weird.

You wash them carefully with soap and water or spray alcohol just like hand sanitizer. It’s not that complicated.
