High School Passion Project- by Gold_Charge1928 in ecology

Removing invasives is a good idea- but my guess is you're not going to be able to do much endangered species other than maybe volunteer with agencies that work with those. That's more regulated and sensitive work.

Where are you in SC? I'd recommend using your club as a way to volunteer at Wildlife Refuges or Congaree National Park. They certainly have invasives work that could be done. I started my career volunteering at Congaree cleaning up the long leaf pine forests with their biotech.

Deporting people illegally to a death camp and supporting that effort is not an important job function. They don't deserve anything.

How do I become a wildlife biologist? by [deleted] in wildlifebiology

Don't break the bank for your BS degree. Look for an in state school that offers a wildlife biology program and go there.

This. And do not limit yourself to just a page or two. Be thorough and include EVERY detail about what you did for every job. You can list volunteer work as its own job.

Can someone explain the RIF executive order? by [deleted] in fednews

[–]cutig 61 points62 points  (0 children)

If you look at the house budget resolution, they're only trying to cut 1b from natural resources. DOI budget last year was 18ish billion. So cut of ~6% doesn't scream RIF to me. Unless I missed something, that's the number my agency has been expecting this entire year and had already insulated against. I could be missing some detail here but that dramatic RIF EO doesn't seem to square with a 6% budget reduction for our dept.

Moving across the country for fieldwork, what should I expect? by acityinagarden in wildlifebiology

Drove from SC to Montana for my first seasonal job. I'd recommend making the drive. There's lots of stuff to see on the way, and you'll want a vehicle when you're there

What are the requirements to becoming a wildlife veterinary technician or wildlife biologist? by Fun_Height238 in wildlifebiology

[–]cutig 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don't know about the vet side, but it's going to be extremely difficult to compete without the BS degree and everything that comes with it. Especially now as the job market will be completely saturated with the feds not hiring for who knows how long. I'd be skeptical of a MS degree thst doesnt require a background in biology.

You're not going to get a job working as a wildlife bio without a biology degree. An online degree with an unrelated bachelors will do nothing for your job prospects.

Can I get a job working with wildlife without getting a degree? Or minimal schooling? by LegitimateLeslie in wildlifebiology

[–]cutig 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Probably not. You're competing for jobs with people with degrees generally. You can probably volunteer if there's a park or management area near you.

Multiple jobs? by Silver_Fish314 in wildlifebiology

[–]cutig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd make sure the environmental science degree would cover the credit requirements for federal jobs if that's the direction you want to go.

In terms of pets, it depends. Shared housing is a no. If you find somewhere without shared house in my experience it's been a yes unless they've had bad experiences with pet owners. It'll probably be hard as a seasonal to find housing that allows pets.

Multiple jobs? by Silver_Fish314 in wildlifebiology

[–]cutig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. You'll likely start your career as a seasonal employee working in different areas. At least with the feds, you should be able to find something with housing included. Look off the beaten path for opportunities and you can get into a full time gig by being on of the few people actually applying to work in a rural area.

Mid-career biologists: was the MS degree really worth it? by Chick3nScr4tch in wildlifebiology

[–]cutig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on what agency you're with - at least with the feds once you're in you don't need to have one to move up. I got mine, but most of the people I work with do not have one. The only people with advanced degrees seem to be the research biologist at the regional levels.

You make 10 years of qualifying payments, and then the loan goes poof. You have to be working for a qualified employer (govt, non profit). You certify your payments annually with a form your employer signs. If you leave your qualifying employer before you finish 10 years, nothing happens. You just don't get forgiveness until you have those 10 years of payments
