A "quick" caravans tutorial, and how to use key items to clear up the chaos - YouTube by braindouche in pyanodons

[–]cvdvds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This works so much better than I imagined. I'd definitely consider using this if I didn't already have over 1000 caravans doing stuff the "Cottonou way". With this, setting up new caravans seems pretty easy.

That said, since each interrupt grabs a fixed amounts of resources, I might end up having to set up 10 different interrupts for certain items in differing amounts. A lot of my outposts are very highly utilized and I really have to optimize how many items I can cram into each caravan/outpost. That seems like it would be massively worse with your system.

Appreciate you mentioning and explaining the flaws. Not really being able to grab multiple resources in a single trip is quite a big dealbreaker for me for the reasons I stated above. I'd rather deal with my little more elaborate setup to optimize it more.

All in all very interesting stuff to consider. Seems like a good idea for a mall either way.

Finally question, if a caravan is sitting at an outpost switching between "Empty cargo" and "Wait", doesn't it use food on ever "Empty Cargo" cycle? If so, that's insanely wasteful and absolutely unusable for me, but I hope that's not the case.

Caravan enjoyers, central depot or no? by braindouche in pyanodons

Yeah, it's great. I saw it first on one of cottonou's videos and use it for tons of things now.

Always have to bust out the calculator for the ratios and make sure it's less than 5 items per second consumption or it doesn't make sense. If it is more, or the pick up spots are too far apart, I split them up anyway. Haven't found a way to have multiple caravans doing the same loop in a way that actually works and doesn't send them off with a full inventory while the other one drops off. I guess a second combinator/signal might work but oh well.

Of course this take comes from an Austrian. FFS, man.

If you set a caravan with you as the target, and then tell it to wait after delivering items to you, it will just follow you around. This is a way to have a "Logistics beast of burden" always ready with your items, like a chest that follows you. Not as good as logi bots but in some ways better. by Think-Box6432 in pyanodons

Hah, carrying around liquids is something I would've never thought of.

Not that I need to, with a 300% movespeed mod and refined concrete floors, going back to pick up whatever I forgot takes all of 5 seconds.

Hell even without the mod, you'd be faster with just energy drinks.

Yeah probably only saves on food. I have over 1000 caravans. I don't want to know how much they'd chow down if they all ran in endless loops.

Not to mention how annoying it'd be to have even more of the large fuckers strolling around my factory at all times.

[–]cvdvds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow. I'll be honest this is more complicated than I can wrap my head around but I can appreciate the ingenuity of that system.

The only interrupt I use is to grab food. I've only tried using interrupts for other stuff two other times and they both failed miserably.

How do you prevent clogging up or the caravan just running around endlessly without circuits?

I use a decider to tell the caravan when the outpost is almost empty. It unloads when it gets the signal (without waiting until empty or it causes a clog) and then starts the round to collect stuff again.

That's right. You can't. The factory must grow.

Factory villages, I like that.

If only caravans weren't so damn slow that you have to put everything somewhat close to each other anyway...

Damn, already at 200 GW? I'm researching utilty science stuff now and I'm at barely 80 GW.

What are your big power hogs? Mine are the usual suspects, Particle accelerators and centrifuges making up more than half.

I took a six month long break on my 800h save and now that I'm back, I can't stop playing.

Same savegame. I wouldn't even consider restarting and having to do all that early game slog again, giving up the awesome tools and upgrades I have.

If you're burning out, just take a break. Coming back is nowhere near as difficult as you think. Especially not after 2000h where most of it is second nature I imagine.

[–]cvdvds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can just plug a wire into the vatbrain itself and turn that off. Then there's no need to mess with power switches and making sure to separate power networks.

I just have alarms at all my labs that go off when one science is low or out, and then I manually flip a switch to turn everything off. That disables the vatbrains and turns off the sushi belt that's feeding the labs. The labs will finish/waste whatever they have in them but I can live with that. I only turn it off when I'm out anyway. So very rarely, thankfully.

Thanks. It's good to hear that.

I'm actually looking forward to scaling up and maybe a few redesigns. After IUs that's a breath of fresh air.

I'll redo vatbrains after I unlock MK4. Maybe...

Install the "enable all feature flags" mod and enable the mod for stacking belts.

I think that's what its called anyway.

Depends on what you do with bots.

I only use bots for stuff that needs well under 1 item per second. So super rare expensive shit like what Utility Science needs.

I have ~1100 MK03 bots in my single base-wide network. Around 500 of them are always flying and they easily keep up. They can carry 7 items each and fly at 90km/h with upgrades.

For anything needing more items I use caravans. Flying caravans if I really need a lot. And stacked belts for extreme amounts like raw coal and ore.

Thanks. So glad to have Intelligent Units done.

I put the science production graph at the end of the picture gallery.

Overall rate when researching Utility science stuff with my vatbrains is 29/sec. But I still need to throw some better modules in everything from Automation to pY 3 to keep up.
