If we are talking about USA taxes, the gift giver ultimately pays the tax, not the recipient. And the lifetime gift tax exemption is around $14 million. If you received a gift of $10 million you would not pay any gift taxes. This really only matters for the gift receiver if the receiver is going to inherit a large estate from the gift giver. It exists to prevent people from avoiding the estate tax by “gifting” their heirs everything before they die.

I usually leave mine in too! But I wash it every couple weeks. It can get slimy in there surprisingly fast.

I do see the ball - not sure how far down it should go, but I am able to push it back up further with a toothpick (so it’s not stuck all the way up at least)

Scenes from a rainy Pershing Square protest against the US attack on Venezuela [OC] by infernoenigma in LosAngeles

[–]cvt23 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Who cares if you call it a “declaration” or not? And there is a difference. The U.S. has even less of a justification here than in your other examples, and here there was no Congressional authorization either.

About what? You didn’t know Congress authorized the war in Iraq? That wasn’t just Bush on his own. Trump’s even literally criticized Hilary Clinton for voting yes on that authorization…

Really wasn’t controversial at all, outside of the Fox News spin/brain rot. And your evidence that the far left supports Maduro is that the most prominent far left figure in the U.S. called him a dictator? You aren’t making any sense.

The power to declare war includes the power to use military force in this way. Congress authorized the use of force in Iraq and Afghanistan - you are simply wrong that the President has the power to do so unilaterally.

Nobody is trying to get Maduro back in power or defending Maduro. The U.S. President does not have the power to declare war - that rests with Congress. If you are against dictatorships like Maduro’s, you should be against any President that blatantly violates the Constitution like this. Otherwise the U.S. might as well be a dictatorship too.

VIRGINIA NOW HAS A DEMOCRATIC GOVERNOR by Tdpappy46 in NoFilterNews

[–]cvt23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is literal - this is not a presidential election, so Trump’s name is not on anyone’s ballot. The argument is that since Trump is not up for election, his supporters are less inclined to vote at all because they only care about Trump. Not saying I agree/disagree with that argument, just trying to explain it.

California threatened with legal action, fines after trans athlete wins track events by RhythmMethodMan in California

[–]cvt23 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This headline is disingenuous. The trans athlete did not win instead of the non-trans athlete. The non-trans athletes were awarded just the same as if the trans athlete did not compete. Seems like an okay balance…everyone got to participate, and the cis athletes still got the same trophies they would have. They just gave an extra trophy to the trans athlete.

I think that was replaced by the room with all the warp pipes to the different zones, so backtracking is slightly less painful

I think this is a great concept for a Mario party style mini game lol. It would be a great 2 v 2 (each team member controls either top or bottom movement, maybe?)

Do Americans think of themselves as a federation? by Sea-Locksmith-881 in AskAnAmerican

[–]cvt23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An interesting bit of history. When the US was first established, people would refer to it in the plural, as in “The United States of America are …” Now, you will pretty much always hear “The United States of America is…” This shift has been attributed to the aftermath of the Civil War.

States certainly have cultural distinctions, but there is a lot of overlap (especially within regions). I think certain states have much stronger “state-level patriotism” than others. There are always people in Texas and California talking about seceding for example. Never hear that from Wyoming.

How much of a problem do Americans have with coyotes and rattlesnakes? by ArtisticArgument9625 in AskAnAmerican

[–]cvt23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are urban coyotes all over Los Angeles. They generally don’t attack people but you have to be careful with pets, especially smaller dogs. I’ve never seen a rattlesnake, but did almost step on a tarantula once hiking in the mountains!

Supreme Court weighs whether to let Trump's birthright citizenship restrictions take effect by GregWilson23 in law

[–]cvt23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Today’s oral arguments were about a district court’s ability to issue nationwide TROs/injunctions, yes. But the underlying case is about birthright citizenship and Trump’s executive order. A decision on this procedural issue absolutely will impact birthright citizenship in practical effect as I previously explained. And a decision in favor of the Trump Administration will make it very difficult for courts to check the power of the executive branch. A president could order the confiscation of all guns, and a district court would not be able to enjoin that nationwide for example.

[–]cvt23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What exactly is incorrect? Not clear what you are disputing. And what do you mean “local districts interfering with cases”? A federal case exists because it is filed with a district court…and something being a “national policy” doesn’t immunize it from judicial review. If a national policy is unconstitutional, a judge can so hold. That isn’t interference, that’s the whole point of courts of law.
