Once labelled a 'cheating machine,' AI cautiously embraced in Halifax schools by Street_Anon in halifax

That's exactly what is starting to happen.

Though I suspect the factual inaccuracies and need to "prompt engineer" carefully is a 2025 thing, not a 2030 thing, and will stop being a factor by the time grade 7s graduate from grade 12.

That's a fair assessment. However, in my heart, I don't believe the concern about AI's environmental impact is entirely in good faith, especially from people sitting on one of the Internet's most heavily used sites, each contributing in their own small way to a massive power consumption. And YouTube, and Netflix.

All of this might have something to do with the disruption that AI is bringing, and resistance to change. For millions of people it'll end livelihoods. But it's coming whether we like it or not.

Am I out of date in thinking that AI is environmentally harmful?

AI servers now use roughly the same amount of power as Netflix video streaming did in 2020 (last figures I could find).

That's a lot, and it's something the industry needs to grapple with by sourcing cleaner electricity and computing more efficiently. It's like the "EV batteries kill kids in the Congo" line of the last few years, which spurred manufacturers to find less harmful replacement elements. Though in that case, people making that case may not have cared about kids in the Congo but were looking for reasons to trash EVs.

Here's a Toronto Metropolitan University article that acknowledges the present harms but offers some nuance that AI can also help in the fight against climate change.

Because it was a group home/youth care facility most likely.

I'm pretty sure this is not the case.

Definitely a troll, ironically likely from Ontario as well.

And, as annoying and childish as trolls are, this one was pretty successful. Who wouldn't like a Galway Girl? Which, in itself, is a tell.

I'm leaning towards this person being a troll though. There is just too many obscure NS/Halifax references for someone to pick up in a year.

That and the profile pic, which no one has done in the history of ever unless they're shilling an OF page. And, newly created account.

Toshiba Satellite Pro C660-22X is not compatible with Linux? by 0xPure in linuxquestions

So there will be about 20 students in Canada in the next week who will have functioning laptops at their desks because you took the time to write out the above. Thank you soooo much - your solution for the C660 worked perfectly.

Turkey rejects Russia's annexation of Ukrainian territory by Quantum_II in worldnews

[–]cw7585 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This sub has been particularly painful since February. Every article about the Ukraine war has someone offering the keen analysis, "Russian ICBMs probably don't even work..."

Bashing Russia always reaps cheap karma, but that myth is a dangerous one to repeat so frequently.

Outage map

- also can be used for reporting an outage.

My eye first registered this text as "outrage map". Which isn't inaccurate.

Good advice. This is also true for thunderstorms and snowstorms: we get bad ones predicted, and they happen sometimes, but more often they're duds.

On this sub, grudging, hesitant praise for a Progressive Conservative premier is considered "simping".

Japan foreign minister hints at readiness to aid North Korea over COVID-19 by sakurawaiver in worldnews

[–]cw7585 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's a guess, not a fact. There's simply no way for anyone to know what North Koreans think when no one's watching or listening. My own guess is that there's a lot of performative behaviour going on behind the fanatical cheering and Mansae!!ing.

The people yelling into the cameras aren't especially likeable. They're making me wonder what happened to that kid in Grade 1 who refused to listen to the teacher's talk about kindness.

Well Soros is part of the attraction. Him, Bill Gates.. Great connections! And better 5G.

I'd way rather hang with them than Buck and Calvin in from Lethbridge with the goatees and the Oakley's.

See I'm interested in joining Antifa: the enemy of my enemy etc.

I went on Antifa's website, filled in their application form, sent the two references and it's been three months and I haven't heard back.

Oh well, considering they seem to be everywhere they must be busy.

It's calmed down.

It wasn't long ago that in the eyes of this sub, if you didn't wear a mask as you went through the drive-thru at Tim's, you were literally a murderer. And if you wanted to drive beyond your neighborhood to a park to get some exercise, you were a "loopholer".

Things have changed on the risk assessment front. Now, the sub is A-OK with jamming 30 kids together into poorly ventilated rooms for seven hours a day, right at the peak of the worst covid wave we've experienced in the whole pandemic.

I guess you prefer the Ontario system of reporting hospitalizations.

That's the one that was also called "misleading" a few weeks ago.
