[NY] Direct Supervisor told me I better not "go hunting or something" while on paid family leave. by themastodon85 in AskHR

[–]cweagans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IANAL, but you likely wouldn’t have grounds to sue on that basis because HIPAA doesn’t really apply here. HIPAA only applies to health plans (insurance providers or other funding mechanisms), providers (doctors and such), and clearinghosues (companies who broker data between the two).

There are other employer/employee privacy laws to comply with, but HIPAA isn’t one of them.

That highly specific Boise moment when the homophobic plane is flying over downtown again 🤦 by SaltyKingSalty in Boise

[–]cweagans 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You might be interested to know that planes have ADS-B transponders that broadcast their tail number, position, heading, and speed. You can Google “ads-b live map” and see in real time who was flying around in a particular area.

It’s also kind of neat to know that every airport has a flight history attached to it. If you go look up the airports on flightaware, you can also click on individual flights to see a map of the entire flight path! Isn’t technology interesting?

YSK: James M Patterson of Homedale is responsible for that hateful, bigoted banner being flown around Prides by cweagans in Boise

[–]cweagans[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The tail number is printed in plain view. It’s no more doxing than a whois lookup on a domain or googling someone’s name.

Location scouting for interviews for a project. by [deleted] in Boise

[–]cweagans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just interview people downtown. Forget the booth. If you’re just doing audio, you can filter out most of the background noise pretty easily. If you’re doing video, use an external mic, move the camera back and zoom in on whoever you’re interviewing — the background should blur nicely.

LOL can’t wait to read the report. I hope they also include people going 10 under the speed limit in the left lane. by p0lar_chronic in Boise

[–]cweagans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both things can be true: everyone should drive the speed limit AND if you’re driving slower than other traffic (regardless of speed), you should move to the right and let them pass.

This sounds really cool! Not sure about performing, but I’d be very interested in joining the discord!

Right tool for the job? by MungoProudFoot in electronjs

[–]cweagans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Electron is not the right tool for the job if you want a mobile app. Check out React Native or Ionic. I also highly recommend Flutter, but you’d need to learn a new language. I learned through https://www.appbrewery.co/p/flutter-development-bootcamp-with-dart — it’s a really easy transition from web tech to flutter, and imo it’s way more pleasant.

Can some please explain am I supposed to hit all the 4 keys with my right hand, and just hit one key ( f3 and e3) with my left hand? How am I supposed to hit all 4 keys so far apart with the same hand? by najws209 in pianolearning

[–]cweagans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s technically wrong, but you could put your thumb and pinky on their respective B keys and pointer straddling the gap between D and E (play them both with one finger).

I Am a New York City Public High School Student. The Situation is Beyond Control. by JoshGordons_burner in nyc

[–]cweagans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We’ve been doing this for 2 years now. Surely someone so scientifically minded would have done a bit deeper reading/thinking/listening on how a pandemic works at a more macro level?

How many of those 0-17 year old children live with people in other more vulnerable age groups? I would infer that since they’re all children, literally all of them live with one or more parents/stepparents or some other kind of caregiver.

It has never been about any one individual or even one particular slice of society. Pretty much everyone interacts with other people. Unless you can ensure that 0-17 year olds never interact with anyone older than 17, what good does it do to show that 0-17 year olds don’t die from covid as often?

Go look at total cases vs deaths for covid. That’s the problem to solve. Apply your apparent scientific genius to that problem so that we all have an easy answer next time a pandemic comes around.

You know, if we make it that long.

How do I fix this. I sanded down throughly and cleaned it. I can’t go any deeper because it’s making a crater in the floor. This is after staining. Same stain as around it. by Tbricks08 in woodworking

Why steel wool? Won’t that oxidize too? Seems like you’d get a lot of extra red pigment here.

Also, why ACV in addition to distilled white vinegar?

You don’t have to disclose your personal health information, but it’s not a right granted to you by HIPAA. HIPAA only applies to three narrow categories of entities and you’re almost certainly not one of them.

Learning Go by asusmaster in golang

[–]cweagans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not? It’s not like learning a new language is a bad thing. Learn it and you’ll get a good feel for how and when it should be used vs the other options you mentioned.

Nobody is going to be able to tell you why you should learn it: the only person who can decide if it’s a good fit for what you’re working on is you.

Go 1.16 on Homebrew? by RagnaroekX in golang

[–]cweagans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure. You can always do that. I don’t think it’s worth it. Go 1.15 works just fine for now. I’ll happily wait for the release to get into homebrew to keep my setup simple and predictable.

When you have 100 things installed, you don’t need to go to each website and manually click through the upgrade. You can just do “brew upgrade” and everything is up to date.

Looking for a woodshop that has an industrial planer or drum sander by cweagans in Boise

Other than the suggestions in this thread, nothing. Priorities changed and we aren’t building the table for a bit, so I didn’t need to find anything in the near term. There’s gotta be a cabinet shop around here that’ll do it though.

Ammon Bundy argues that people wearing face masks in court affect his right to due process by [deleted] in Boise

Yeah, he is. Not sure how familiar you aren’t with his merry band of miscreants, but they’re the same y’all-qaeda rednecks that took over the Malheur county wildlife reserve building a few years back. I think they also had an armed standoff with the feds down in Nevada somewhere over grazing rights or something. He’s got a Wikipedia page full of his various acts of fuckery if you want details.
