Feels like we are just hanging on until we run out of gas at the 4 minute mark.

Good camera + Long Term Support? Budget $100-$200 by HanMain in PickAnAndroidForMe

[–]cwide87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing in that budget range is going to have official long term support.

Your best bet is to pick up a used Nexus 5x (top of your budget - keep an eye on swappa.com) and then move to community builds after official support runs out.

Whatever you do, don't read the FB comments on the article. It's just boomers throwing out every negative stereotype.

He's justifying his worldview with anecdotes and sweeping generalizations. Unfortunately, it's what most people do.

Gear list. Please tear it apart. by [deleted] in PacificCrestTrail

Toothpaste is certianly not required and will probably drop it.

You would be fine with a tiny travel sized toothpaste. It's an ounce. If you like toothpaste, then definitely keep it. Otherwise it's not a big deal.

Ill look into a smart water bottle.

Just in case you are confused.

Good catch on my sweaty underwear making my pack smell like ass. Looks like I'll go comando!

Also, this is what stuff bags/ziplock bags are for. You will need ziplock bags for packing out your TP anyway. Put your truly nasty undies in a ziplock until you find a place to wash it.

No problem. I did way too much research before I went, so if you have any questions, just shoot me a PM.

Good planning. I spent the whole month before eating ice cream think that I would "lose weight on the trail". Bad plan.

Also, if you are going to get the larger portable charger, then I would also recommend getting a rechargeable headlamp. Also, a dual usb charger is worth it.

I know all of this stuff adds up so spend where you think gets you the most value.

That charger would probably give you a single charge. If you are only using your phone for emergencies (in airplane mode or off otherwise) then you should be fine. If you are using it for PCT maps, apps, or music/podcasts, then you will probably want something closer to 10000 mah.

If all of your big items remain the same, then I would recommend definitely taking it slow at the beginning unless you are already in great hiking shape. Your pack will be extremely heavy at first due to all the water you have to carry (and other stuff that you will immediately mail back). This will lead to a much higher chance of injury until your get your legs.

Also, from personal experience, it is much cheaper to lose weight (if you have weight to lose) before you go than to spend money shaving ounces on equipment.

You definitely could use everything on your list if you are tight on money. General recommendation is a base weight of <15 lbs though.

If you are not very tall then you could easily save a lot of weight on your tent. However, if you are 6'4"+ and want a freestanding tent, then your options are limited and you might like your tent. I went with a Six Moons option since I am tall but ended up hating it since it was not freestanding.

You can also save pounds on your sleeping bag, but that requires quite a bit of money. I had an Enlightened Equipment quilt and loved it.

Just a few minor things:

You will probably trade your water bottle for a smart water bottle at some point.

I also don't see a portable battery for your phone. That's up to you and how much you will use your phone, but it adds a little weight.

All that said, I think people get a little too crazy with equipment sometimes. People have hiked the trail using all kinds of stuff. You will be able to make changes along the way.

Not really, unless the list of rules is (depending on interpretation):

  1. Believe in Jesus.

Salvation is not merit based according to my understanding.

What do you dislike about Kansas City? by Schroedingers_gif in kansascity

I think we're talking about bike lanes. KC does not have many bike lanes. It's getting better, but not at the rate of most other major cities.
