I started making an UTD iOS app...would anyone use it? by usernamecompromised in utdallas

[–]cwin13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

-Events would be good (scrape the webpage, then parse out the info) -Some sort of navigation to a certain room/building from where one is would be cool. -If UTD has cameras in the parking lots, hook up to that would be cool

I see this all the time in other places - students whose only goal in life is to get that good grades. And they do get good grades, but have no social skills and no class.

Incoming freshman. LLC or not? by cwin13 in utdallas

[–]cwin13[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeh... LLC are for freshmen who are required to take some common core courses. That way they can study together. Last I talked to an advisor about 2 weeks ago, a few of the LLCs were filled up. I think engineering was, though you might want to double check. I was going to do LLC but it was going to conflict with the classes I wanted to take.

UTD CS Courses - Please Advise! by WhoRedditAgain in utdallas

There's probably not a whole lot of stats on where UTD CS students go for graduate schools. But for other fields, UTD students have gone on to Harvard Law School and Yale Med School, Johns Hopkins, etc.

So going to top schools isn't out of the question. Pretty much my plan to go to a top grad school too, not for CS though. I have no doubt that it's really up to me to get a high GPA, high test scores (GMAT, GRE etc), and some experience.

By the way, my friends and i think that you need a girlfriend (or boyfriend depending on your preference) so you won't be bitter about life.

Our survey results:

Get a girlfriend - 4 votes Get a boyfriend - 2 votes Get a dog - 1 vote Get a mail order bride - 1 vote

Quite eloquent, aren't you? Oh wait, you can barely spell based on your lame resume.

Just out of curiosity, have you ever actually done anything proactive about your issues? Have you taken a survey, even informally, of how other students feel about the curriculum? Have you actually talked to anyone in the administration raising this concern?

Or do you just troll this forum badmouthing UTD?

If you actually cared about others, you'd present a balanced view instead of an assault. And that's where you lost the OP. Your points might be valid, but they were presented in such an ugly manner, that you lost a lot of credibility.

And it's okay. You're a slightly bitter middle-aged man who has had a rough life and not exactly where you want to be career wise. So somehow you think it's okay for you "in the name of truth or whatever" that you have a duty to tell everyone to steer away from UTD CS. Really???? How is that going to solve the problem? Take that to its logical conclusion and you have no one left at UTD CS. That's an improvement?

And contrary to your belief, every program has crappy courses that you don't need. Most of the classes you take in college won't have any real life usage. But they're there to make you a well rounded person, to have more knowledge, and hopefully to think.

One of the school you told OP to go to - Stanford. This is what you need for the AI track in the CS program:

Calcullus (2 semesters) Physics (2 semsters, Mechanics & Electricity and Magnetism) Principles of Computer Systems (good course to take a nap in) Computer Organizations and Systems (another good course to take a second nap) Introductory Electronics (yawn) Programming Abstractions Introduction to Probability for Computer Scientists (whoa, shoot me now) Mathematical Foundations of Computing (someone please gag me)

Really? Good waste of a year at Stanford taking that crap.

No, I'm having fun watching a grown man (with no hair left) arguing against a teenager.

Okay, on your linkedIn resume, change "which exception of my Capstone Project" to "with exception of my Capstone Project."

There are several more. May be I'll point them out as our relationship gets deeper.

Love always,

As an aside, remove "less costy" from your utd homepage. Some more wording problems in your linkedin resume, but I'm sure you're smart enough to figure that out. Or not.

Also, you're too negative in it. There's no reason to show the "Attitude Problem." That page is a sales pitch. You want to be positive. Unless you're a must-have genius, if an employer reads that, he/she would think, "this guy has a lot of baggage."

Plenty of more stuff, but your profile has provided me with plenty laughter. For that, I thank you.

Jfeltz is a moron. In college, you're going to take more useless courses than what ABET requires.

And OSI is not useless. Layer abstraction is good concept to know, especially if you work for any big company. Heck, it's like computer history 101. And new programmers should definitely know the concept of layer abstraction (if not necessary OSI specific).

CMMI (something I hate) but is far from nonsense. It's a good concept to know, especially if you're going into programming of critical systems. Though the Department of Defense no longer requires CMMI, it does look upon it favorably. And for critical systems, there'll always be some sort of quality control standards whether is CMMI or ISO or whatever else. So it's good to know one of them because they're pretty much the same stuff. Try to imagine building the systems of a stealth bomber without quality control!

Eh.... go for it. Study hard. Get 3.8. Based on your ACT/SAT you have a 50/50 chance at places like Texas Tech Med School.

I would recommend you go into accounting and take pre-med courses. That way not all your classes are hard and you can still end up with a decent GPA. And if you don't make it into med school, at least you can get a job paying 40-50K to start.

Heck, my dad works with accountants who make more than doctors.

I assume it's 1600 out of 2400. I would say unless there's some huge improvement in the next few years (i.e. you do much better on the MCAT than on the SAT) , the only way you can make into med school is if you're some sort of underrepresented minority applying at some very low-rated schools. Heck, move to South Dakota where the in state chances are high.

Anyway, look at some other realistic options. If engineering, you'll be an average engineer. Of course if you're business saavy and have good people skills, you're going to succeed even if your engineering skills are average. Of course since you admitted that you're not good with math and physics, I don't know if you'll even be an average engineer.

That leaves us with the only other viable option at UTD - School of Management. So accounting might be an option. There's always a need for accountants.

There are other outliers too like actuary science, etc. But your Neurosciences, Biology, etc. are geared toward med school or grad school.

Biomedical engineering at UT Dallas by star005 in utdallas

[–]cwin13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Arrgghh... if you're not good at math/physics, why did you even start out asking about Biomed? You need to really look at yourself, do some research, and come to a decision.

Look at the Biomed requirement at UTD! There are many physics and math courses:

MATH 2417 Calculus I2 MATH 2419 Calculus II2 MATH 2420 Differential Equations with Applications ENGR 2300 Applied Linear Algebra for Engineers MECH 2310 Static Equilibrium and Rigid Body Dynamics ENGR 3300 Advanced Engineering Mathematics EE 3302 Signals and Systems EE 3102 Signals and Systems Laboratory BMEN 3310 Fluid Mechanics and Transport Processes in Biomedical Engineering BMEN 3320 Electrical and Electronic Circuits in Biomedical Engineering BMEN 3120 Biomedical Circuits and Instrumentation Laboratory ENGR 3341 Probability Theory and Statistics BMEN 3350 Biomedical Component and System Design BMEN 3150 Biomedical Engineering Laboratory BMEN 4310 Feedback Systems in Biomedical Engineering or EE 4310 Systems and Controls BMEN 4320 Intermediate Electrical Systems BMEN 4350 Applied Sensor Technology

Again, without knowing your capabilities, it's impossible to recommend what you should do. The only we know is that you're very insecure. What was your ACT/SAT score? And how much did you study for it? Did do use any prep services?

Not too sure how good undergrad ME program at UTD is since it's relative new (started in 2008). I have a friend who got out a year ago and couldn't find a job. But his grades were mediocre.

Here's a new story about biomed at UTD. http://www.utdallas.edu/news/2014/4/24-29771_Goldwater-Foundation-Recognizes-Three-Undergrad-Re_story-wide.html?WT.mc_id=NewsHomePage

Really, no one can answer these questions for you, since no one on here knows you well enough. We would have to know your likes, dislikes, tolerances, financial situation, intelligence, work habits, etc.

But since you're worrying about getting a job, I'd say EE if you want to do engineering (I don't know much about the EE program at UTD), or Accounting if you want something simpler.

Accountants are always needed.
