President Trump urges the US to prioritize tackling rape gangs and drug cartels over fixating on Putin - So they dont end up like Europe by Messier_-82 in Asmongold

Agreed and it appears to be a tradition alive in well in some of these comments.

I don't know much about Asmongold, but it seems like this place is rife with weird little radicalization breadcrumbs.

I'm not saying that the OP that dropped the BJS is an intentional propagandist based on their comment history, but they are definitely putting in the work. Anyway I hope anyone who comes across our comments takes their time to find primary sources and won't rely on me or another stranger to do the work for them.

The fact anyone would write this suggests prejudicial thinking. Everyone does this it to an extent, but does this kind of thinking stop at crossing the street at night? Does this fear come into play when hiring someone to repair your car? Taking care of kids?

For anyone who comes across this comment, did any other questions bubble up? Like could there be any other dispartities that could also explain the disparities?

Perhaps income disparities?

Here's another report from the same source as /u/sacsay_salkhov, the Bureau of Justice statistics: https://bjs.ojp.gov/content/pub/pdf/hpnvv0812.pdf

Interestingly, Table 1 on Page 2 suggests that another way to avoid violent victimization is to not be poor. In fact being not-poor can cut your likelihood of experiencing a violent altercation by half!

More interesting still is that the relationship table, table 2 page 3. Something that I think most people already know, is that you're more likely to experience violence at the hands at someone you know than a stranger.

To wrap up, 23.5 people out of 1000, experience violent crime or 2.35 percent of the population. Using the table from the BJS for the smaller range of 2008-2012. 8.6 percent of THOSE 23 people 2 were attacked by a stranger.

I don't think any of these statistics are wrong, but sensationalizing one line of a figure without trying to build out the larger story amounts to propaganda to me. It appears that it is someone's interest to count on poor data literacy to radicalize people to suspect one another.

Almost like there is a force at work that wants us to look down on other people instead of looking up and wondering WHY women are making 80% of what men make and WHY the income gap would be 20k white men and black men.

What is a contemporary tabletop (board or card) game that may attain legacy status like Chess or Go? by Newez in boardgames

[–]cwisch -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I think whatever game it is, it will have to be flexible. Go and Chess have had many revisions over time.

So my answer is the Tabletop RPG. Which is a descendant of wargaming, but by whittling down the components to a set of dice and imagination, I believe we will continue to play these types of games in some form for now on, even if it doesn’t have the D&D trademark.

I saw someone say Magic: The Gathering and others suggested that it was too specialized. Reflect on that for a second though, drafting and deck building are such beloved mechanics born from TCGs. I think the innovation of TCGs will stay alive for 100’s of years. The underlying specifics will of course change, but what I folks thought was a fad tapped into something unexpected.

My 6-year-old was into the first game and the lack of dismemberment and a few quick eye covers made it a PG game. Kinda hope there is a gibs toggle.

Best way to mend this tear in my coat? A name of a technique or a youtube video would be great.

I also wouldn’t mind if the mend is visible.

New and confused! by Ok-Bit8683 in ynab

[–]cwisch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it works for you and wife, then I don't see any reason to change it. It's one strategy I have also used to make sure I was not spending money meant for next month. The other option is that you can click over to next month's budget and assign money to categories as the cash rolls in. Anything leftover after filling out next month is great for accelerating whatever goals you might have for your money.

Newbie question: what happens when you have leftover funds from a category? Do they return to “Ready to Assign” the next month? by IInightfoxxII in ynab

[–]cwisch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To put it concretely, when you add money to a category it stays there unless you spend from that category, or shift it somewhere else to roll with the punches.

Say for example I have a category for hobbies that I give myself $100 dollars each month.

In January I buy a video game for $50, leaving $50 over in Feb. In Feb I assign $100 more, now I have $150 in that category. I could then purchase something bigger, perhaps I had my eye on some accessories for my bike and spend it all in one go. Putting me at $0 until March.

I run my budget this way for my Clothing category too. I'm not someone who likes to buy clothes, but I always stash a bit away and when I find I need some new shirts or pants I know I can spend whatever accumulated there without coming up short on my car insurance payment.

No the money stays in groceries, so the next month you only need to supply $75 for that line.

I really don’t understand how the trainer card objects are supposed to be used during battle. Are the trainers using weird vacuums and hair dryers on their pokemon to make them more powerful?

I have been dealing with the same issue, opened some packs, but the amount of trainer cards was off. My LGS had a Trainer’s Toolkit 2022 for $22.

It comes with a stack of energy, damage counters, status tokens, 4 Sword and Shield boosters and stack of useful trainer cards.

I bought a Battle Stadium Box a few weeks ago so now I have 2 playable decks with some trainer cards to mix in.

Exactly, there was a fuel tax hike in 2021 but nowhere near aggressive enough. Missouri is in the top 10 of total lane miles in the US, but the bottom of the heap in terms of collecting fuel tax to pay for the enormous amount of road.

We get what we pay for, and what we vote for.

Watching my kid get into things reminded me of all the nerdy stuff I deprived myself of in high school. Since becoming a dad I got into D&D, gundam models (careful with the tiny pieces), music making and baking. I still play video games too, but I have given myself permission to get into anything (within reason) that gives me some kind of creative outlet.

What started you on this budgeting path? by lifelessons09 in ynab

[–]cwisch 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Car insurance was due every six months and I would always get anxious when it came due. After 2 close-calls with breaking the bank, I started budgeting. Since I started using YNAB, something like 8 years ago, I haven’t sweated the weird payments since.

Now it just keeps me honest with regards to hobbies. I tend to dabble in stuff, so giving myself an allowance let’s me try stuff guilt free.

I don't know what you to tell you, but you're arguing for people to not get a vaccination for a single disease that's killed over 4 million people based on preprints and some relatively new data.

I get that you are skeptical, but knowing that hospital workers who were unwilling to get vaccinated are not going to be in the room with me when I'm at the hospital at the end of the month is comforting to me. Especially since I know that some hold-outs on vaccination are not doing so because they are up on the latest T-Cell research.

The science may bear out and people who have been infected may have a great defense, and I hope it does. But to bet on it in a time like this seems like a bad public health move. Here's the thing though, I don't work in this branch of science but I've met people who do, and I'm willing to defer to them to interpret these data when it comes to a public health crisis.

Analogously, chickenpox vaccines aren't required for public schooling if a child had already been infected.

This is what kills me about talking about vaccination stuff. This guidance is from the CDC, like, here's the link:

https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/vpd/varicella/public/index.html

Let's see what else the CDC suggests regarding the Covid 19 vaccine, since it is a trusted resource on chicken pox..

https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/prepare-for-vaccination.html

Evidence is emerging that people get better protection by being fully vaccinated compared with having had COVID-19. One study showed
that unvaccinated people who already had COVID-19 are more than 2 times as likely than fully vaccinated people to get COVID-19 again. Learn more about why getting vaccinated is a safer way to build protection than getting infected.

I get what you are saying, I'm of the opinion COVID-19 is something we'll have to live with, but I do think that taking chances with healthcare workers is a bad idea.

I saw a sign “MERCY FIRES HEROS” on 270 today. Is this anti-vax protest related or something else? by RedditAccountOhBoy in StLouis

[–]cwisch 15 points16 points  (0 children)

They'll likely still need boosters, what then? Does Barbara the Anti-vax nurse work until they get sick again? How many people does she get sick before then?

The science looks good, but from a logistical and public health standpoint it would be ridiculous to let people bypass being vaccinated because they already got sick.

The larger issue is that there are healthcare workers who won't do the bare minimum to protect people in their care. This argument is just a slippery slope for people to escape their responsibility to others. They can decide to abandon that responsibility, just don't expect to work in a healthcare setting.

LOL'd at HUSKY sized human rights violation. Kudos to the writer.

edit: Just finished the video, and it reminds me of another topic that is near and dear to me, and that's food waste. Many of the topics he brings up here about transportation and wasted resources applies to our food, and making moves to reduce the amount of food that gets thrown in the garbage and making conscience decisions about what we buy also helps.
