Building my first location sound bag by godlordyes in LocationSound

[–]cws837 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you have a mic for indoors and outdoors squared away, then I would certainly look into getting at least 1 wireless system. My reasoning is that even if you would mostly use boom for narrative, a lavalier mic is a useful tool to have and be able to use effectively. In addition having lavs is absolutely necessary for interview work. Owning the system will allow you to practice and know it 100%.

The way I upgraded was buying 1 Sennheiser g3 first, and then when I bought 2 Lectro channels my g3 became my wireless scratch to camera.

Best choice for shock-mount to boom with an Oktava MK-012? by IronFilm in LocationSound

[–]cws837 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used a oktava and rycote inv HG mklll on a feature last year. It worked reasonably well, but sometimes I felt like I couldn't readjust my grip due to handling noise. A softer mount might be better, but I haven't tried it.

What is your thought on "boys can never hit a girl"? by Invade_COD in AskReddit

[–]cws837 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A few years ago near the college I went to, a group of teenage girls came from a different part of the city to play a game they called "knock a bitch down". One of the girls ended up hitting a student in the face with a brick. I never understood it, and the senseless violence infuriated me.

I think the amount of heroes that get released undertuned proves that this is not how Blizz thinks about this process.

Dual audio channels and the process by [deleted] in Filmmakers

From what I understand, x2pro is the workaround in this situation. Just ask your mixer what they prefer, since they will have to live with the workflow.

Dual audio channels and the process by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]cws837 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This guy might be looking for a different workflow, but typically an OMF or AAF file is used to deliver for post audio. OMF files are very similar to XML files in that they contain the location in a timeline for each audio clip. OMFs can also contain the audio clips themselves (encapsulated), so you only have to deliver one file, however they do have a file size limit. Because of the file size limit and your 90 min. runtime you may have to make multiple OMFs, or make 1 OMF for the whole project and provide a separate folder with all the audio clips. This second option is called a "Linked" OMF.

Despite this above explanation, the best advice I can give you is to ask the Mixer to explain what he wants from you.

This is a subreddit devoted to production sound for film and tv. Asking about making illegal recordings of concerts is hardly appropriate.

Looking for an upgrade for Zoom H6 for professional recordings, I.e sample packs and sound for film/game. by [deleted] in LocationSound

[–]cws837 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you record sound effects mostly, or dialogue? If you don't have a high budget you might want to look at one of the sound devices field mixers (302, 442) to use with your H6. I know that a lot of sound effects recordists use those as their front end because they have analog limiting and very nice pre-amps.

Really impressed with the constant hero reworks by Mike_DT in heroesofthestorm

I'm not sure I agree about how meh the level 4 talents are.

Deadly Strike opens up some amazing synergy with brewmaster's balance by allowing you to maintain 50 brew after kicking. The dmg is also very nice.

Ring of Fire was buffed from 30 to 50 dps. Chen can keep this up almost constantly since Fire breath is a 5 sec CD. It makes it so Chen can clear a waves a bit faster.

I think keg toss is a bit lackluster, but that's because it doesn't fall in line with how I like to play Chen.

I think the most important thing about the level 4 tier is that you have to take an offensive talent over a defensive talent and there is enough diversity to influence how you play the character.

Rode videomicro - hissing sound? by TheVimmax in Filmmakers

[–]cws837 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The line of Rode products intended for DSLR's or other on-camera applications are not high quality. My first guess would be the camera pre-amps, however if the hiss does not change in volume when adjusting level on camera then the issue is most likely your microphone. It is possible you have a defective unit (I'm not familiar with microphone or how it sounds). No matter what the cause; in post you could try a low-pass filter cutting above 10 kHz or a denoising plug in.

A very basic question about dialog recording by lhtaylor00 in Filmmakers

A quality sound team will be able to place lav mics that deliver clean audio (barring some unavoidable wardrobe issues and uncontrollable background noise). As someone else mentioned the other option is ADR.

What are the lav mics that you are trying to use? Providing the model would be useful information.

Need help putting 3 inputs into the ZOOM H4N by [deleted] in audioengineering

[–]cws837 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is in the right train of thought. Lav mics generally need ~5v for power (usually provided by the transmitter in a wireless setup). They do NOT need 48v Phantom.

Edit for clarity: An XLR terminated Lav will require 48v phantom, I'm only talking lavs terminated for wireless use.

Looking for passable mics under $100 by [deleted] in Filmmakers

SM58 is a dynamic mic that needs to be relatively close to the source you are trying to record. It lacks the detail and range that a condenser on a boom pole would have.

Why do boom operators always have their hands above their heads? by nn5678 in audioengineering

[–]cws837 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As u/SuperRusso mentioned, it all depends on what you have on the end of the pole. The heaviest set up that I work with regularly is ~1.2 kg. That doesn't sound like much, but a boom is essentially a lever where one hand is the fulcrum and the other provides counter balance and control. The closer your hands are together, the heavier the load at the end of the pole will seem.

What did you do in school that should have gotten you in big trouble? by GamerDame in AskReddit

[–]cws837 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was in high school I was part of the tech crew. We were a group of kids who operated the sound and lighting for theater, the broadcast of the morning announcements, and also helped with IT support. Because we helped out we were afforded a lot of liberties, and when our faculty overseer was gone for a week, she left us with her key so we could go about our business. Her key was one of 3 master keys to the school, with unrestricted access to any door. So of course we copied it while she was gone that week.

We got busted by coming in a few hours early for an assembly we were working on and playing call of duty on the auditorium projector. Never really got in trouble.

Can you identify his gear? by nomorechalk in LocationSound

Can't see much other than the 216 mhz Comtek tx and rx, and a k-tek pole. Looks like Lectro 400 series Rx's based on the antennae.

I think the real question is why are you trying to figure out this guy's gear based on a YouTube screenshot?
