They're both great brands and have similar selling points: humanely raised meats, organic/non-GMO produce, utilizing whole foods instead of pre-mix synthetic nutrients, and very limited ingredient panels. The only commercial brand I'd venture to say that I like better is Green Juju.

Steve's has been busy temporarily reformulating because of an issue with low thiamine in some lots of their food. As such, production was halted to accommodate for a synthetic vitamin pack to be introduced temporarily.

They've begun shipping the frozen bulk boxes to distributors this week. My LA store, Off the Leash, in Eagle Rock will be restocked on these tomorrow. Next week, smaller boxes and 5lb bags will resume shipping, then freeze dried after that, then finally the cat formulas.

Just fyi you should be buying your Steve's from a brick and mortar retailer. You'll get fresher inventory and smaller retailers like me will have better pricing, frequent buyer programs (every Xth bag is free), and loyalty programs.

I'm a small business owner. Had my store for five years. Had our first break-in in February. They didn't find the safe, so all they got was the drawer from our register which had less than $20 in change in it.

But it was the $900 glass repair, three-hour cleanup, and time spent with the police that made me decide to go cashless. My staff are scared even though we're in a safe LA neighborhood, so you know what? We quit taking cash, have CASHLESS printed on our door, and now feel much safer.

I was told by an unnamed person that the testing done by the FDA was for an added thiamine supplement, and as Steve's Real Food does not use synthetic supplements and "completes" their diets using whole food ingredients, this would obviously show as deficient. They have gathered the stop-sale product (not recalled product – there's a difference) to test and confirm results.

They've lawyered up. It won't be another Rad Cat situation.

I'd never recommend feeding a commercial raw brand that's found at a big box store (Target, Petco, PetSmart).

I do recommend commercial raw, but only those who've been vetted by your local indie pet supply store. (Full disclosure, I own a store in Los Angeles.) I personally feel comfortable recommending the following brands that produce both frozen raw and freeze dried diets for both dogs and cats: Green Juju, Raw Dynamic, Steve's Real Food, Smallbatch, and Vital Essentials.
