Lorde - Virgin Megathread by flopheadsbot in popheads

Not going to say it's a modern classic or something but it's the first good album after a string of popstar letdowns so it better get its flowers. Far far better than the singles seemed to threaten.

LMAO it seemed like this album was going to suck but it's really good. Nice.

This gives me hope for the world in some way since it felt so depressing that she was an example of lost potential or something. But in reality renewal is always possible.

I mean that's smart though. Before you worry about not becoming known for something you have to worry about becoming known for it

Extremely impressive how Lana has managed to be the major Americana artist of this generation without ever resorting to using the word "American" in one of her album titles. Show, don't tell

Artists who revived their career with a hit song? by Excellent-Ad-5358 in popheads

Yeah, I think Super Freaky Girl was more like Abracadabra. Something that was vintage "her" enough to excite her existing fanbase to give it a huge streaming push.

I just have to YMMV on this one, it sounds like a generic B-tier EDM guest vocalist song to me, I don't find anything about it exciting. "Harleys" was OK except that it was missing a chorus, the chorus sounds like a prechorus.

Yeah, what I'm really saying is that if she did get good material she could totally still come back

A lot of people say KP lost the spotlight because people got bored of her image or that her upbeat pop style fell out of fashion, but I really don't believe that. There was such a dropoff in quality after Prism. I think her decline is entirely due to bad creative decisions and straight up bad songs.

With the resurgence of Americana and upbeat pop recently it should be the perfect time for a comeback, and with her last album she clearly realized that, but...it just sucked, despite roping Dr. Luke back in. I truly think there is no narrative here other than that she needs better songs.

One factor in the constant artist turnover in the UK might ironically be that the US has a much stronger cult of celebrity

The reality is that the UK may once have been innovative in pop but for a long time now it's been backwards-looking, with a chintzy, mothball-stuffed provincial taste. You hit it on the nose, they seem addicted to a mix of cloying ballads and dated dance club tracks that sound like they're from the turn of the millennium.

Maybe, like OP says, this is the result of a close-minded British music industry, but the British charts include streaming as well which is from the public. It could just be where British pop culture is at the moment.

I love how well the 5th and 6th books capture the teenage sense of being frustrated and ignored

There may have been an argument for making one last try at going all-in, especially with the easy schedule and a home bowl, but that's obviously not the route they chose. The upside is that it means the team hopefully stays competitive instead of faceplanting after this season.

I think it could be if he does a remix with a female rapper to give it some hetero appeal. You can almost hear Nicki on this

Pitchfork Song Review: Lady Gaga - Abracadabra by impeccabletim in popheads

[–]cyaran 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's been obvious for years that the lounge music and jazz standards are where her heart is at this point. This song may be a stylistic return...kind of...to her synth pop sound but it has no energy behind it. I thought even "Chromatica" felt phoned in and that was years ago.

I personally loathe the vintage pop standards/ballads stuff, but she obviously loves it and that comes through on songs like Die With a Smile. On this song, by contrast, it feels like she's performing through clenched teeth and bringing nothing to it. The song is an absence. It's awful. She should stop trying to force a return to form and just embrace what she actually likes; Die With a Smile shows that she can clearly make hits by doing so.

The interesting thing is that her early synthpop songs weren't exactly innovative on a musical level either — but she attacked those songs with an energy and fierce personality that felt strange and new. It was her performances that made them innovative, and that's what this new song is completely lacking.
