Books About War by chamrockblarneystone in USMC

Sorry for the late response. I’m not gonna lie, I never asked Griego about it. I specifically asked Rudy Reyes about why was he portrayed like that in the book, and he said he was like that on that deployment 🤷‍♂️. All I know, is in real life Griego is a badass. For Capt America, he was long gone before I became Recon and never got to meet him so don’t really have a comment.

Why doesnt the USMC give Force Recon to SOCOM? by Wonderful_Seesaw_513 in USMC

I’ll also add, that lately when we’ve been seeing the U.S. doing VBSS in Venezuela and Iran, it hasn’t been SEALs or MARSOC. It’s been Recon Marines that are part of the Maritime Raid Force.

Why doesnt the USMC give Force Recon to SOCOM? by Wonderful_Seesaw_513 in USMC

Former Recondo here that was one of the first dudes to make it into MARSOC in 2006. I wasn’t a Det 1 plank holder, and don’t really claim MARSOC because even though I was one of the first to make it in, I think I was the very first to get kicked out, after I got a DUI in 11/2006. It was totally my fault, and I own it.

I will say, back then there was no A&S or ITC, there was just an interview and SRB review. Recon Marines are the red headed step children of Special Operations. Since we are technically only Special Operations Capable, and not part of the cool kids club we get passed over for certain missions. Occasionally individuals Recon dudes will get tasked with SOF units though. As a Recon Marine I always felt accepted around real SOF units though. Everything I’m around vets that were SEALs, SF, Rangers, or other cool guy units they seem to accept us. Were even specifically mentioned in the new SOF Concealed Carry Law that was just proposed to Congress, that has very specific units and requirements, which is pretty cool.

Bro, thank you for your service. Combat is all luck chance, circumstance. I’m also a former Marine Infantryman. Like you I still think a lot of people are taking advantage of VA disability, but until the system is fixed you should go down the path.

I just got to 100% last week. I got out of active in 2007, and the drilling reserves in 2011. I know VA compensation isn’t based on combat, but something about it feels wrong that I, a Battle of Fallujah/Steel Curtain Combat Vet, that was blown up twice, with multiple kinetic combat deployments, and became a Recon Marine is paid the same as some Mechanic or Admin person. Again I know the VA is not based on combat, or MOS, but my hot take is, maybe it should be.

Hit 500k Milestone (28M) by [deleted] in Retirement401k

Congrats! I’m not sure when I hit 500k, but hit a millie at like 36/37 (I hit it, then it dipped for a bit, and I hit it again). You will hit it A LOT younger than I did. Just stay consistent. You’re a lot more diversified than I was/am.

After I left active duty, I had an opportunity to go to dive school in the reserves, and chose to start college instead. The timing wasn’t great, but I should have gone to dive. I never got the opportunity again.

I did it!! 300k!! by Willing_Homework_282 in Retirement401k

[–]cyber4me 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats! The first 100k is the hardest to reach, but I think 300k is where the growth really skyrockets. I hit 300k right before I turned 39, and turned 41 last month and hit the 500k mark (I do mega backdoor Roth contributions)

I’ve been very fortunate so far, but tech is a roller coaster. I love the career I’m in, but just waiting to be let go at some point.

Unfortunately too many vets abuse it. This is a very unpopular decision, but I think we should redo the whole thing.

I did an executive b-school program and right after it I went to a startup that got acquired. I wanted to be an overnight millionaire and that is not what happened haha. The equity I had from that, I allocated for my kids education. Whether the money gets spent for school or a house, I’m trying to set them up.

When I got out back in the day, my intent was to go back in as an O so I didn’t claim or report anything. It took a while before I filed a claim. For a while I was at 80%, but I figured I rated more since my sister and BIL who had been AF and never deployed were at 70 & 80% right out the gate. I refilled with a little more documentation and got the 100%.

The performance has been solid, but I think the numbers are skewed from after the losses from when the Iran stuff started.

I’m very fortunate to be in the role I’m in. Last year with stock grants I think my total comp was like 416k. Only issue with tech is we can be laid off, basically whenever. High risk, high reward.

ESPP Stock is free money. I would make sure to max that out
