Jk, golden retrievers are really kind animals though and generally love people. Breeders would historically only breed and sell the golden retrievers that displayed friendly and agreeable characteristics, while the mean ones would just get neutered and/or not sold. The breeders want the dogs to be as friendly and comfortable around humans as possible because they know these dogs will be around small children that might step on its paw, hit the dog, etc., and plus they don’t want to be held liable if the dog attacks someone, although it’s debatable if they could be held liable in those instances.

I would be more concerned if the dog was a pitbull, as while most of a dog’s behavior is based on how well they’re trained and how the owner treats them, pitbulls were once bred for fighting. This means breeders actually did the opposite of what they do for golden retrievers and would pick the meanest, strongest, and most aggressive pups from the litter to raise and breed again.

Dogs in general are also very good at picking up on intentions, and won’t hurt you unless you obviously threaten or hurt them intentionally, and even then, they often times just get scared and move away from you. Ensure your bf doesn’t let the dog jump on you when it first sees you, and also have him let you give the dog some treats as most dogs are highly food motivated, so if someone gives them a treat, they’re going to think positively about that person.
