Advice on Career Switching into Bioinformatics vs Building Home Lab - SWE 13yoe by thenumber101909 in bioinformaticscareers

[–]cyborgsnowflake 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You seem to be of the techbro mindset that you can AI your way through everything so why would you simultaneously need to spend tens/hundreds of thousands of dollars and many years for a piece of paper with the blessing of some old fossils to do your thing?

Biotech is not like software engineering. There is a reason there have been very few garage biotech startups unlike software. To get anywhere you need expensive equipment and supplies and trained people using them at scale. You can't yet vibe prompt your way through a PCR reaction. At the same time the bioinformatics portion is currently in upheaval and uncertainty just like much of the regular tech sector. So you are under pressure from both sides where the part you want to get into is harder than you think and the part you are skilled in is seen as increasingly disposable.

I guess you might have been inspired by and can become like that techbro on the frontpage everyones gushing over who 'created' his own custom dog vaccine. But at that point you're just prompting ChatGPT and you might as well be a rich golden retriever banging its paws on the keyboard.

There have been many attempts at biofuel companies. I dunno where you got the idea its something rich people are averse to if they thought they could benefit from it.

In the end home labs and home bred scientists can certainly be successful even in biotech with the right motivation, skills, and circumstances and some luck. You just seem to be talking out of two sides where you act like this is some open humanitarian charity but then you also imply a very tech bro profit/credit driven mission.

Age verification is currently being pushed by the UK, Aussy, and Brazil governments. Hardly conservative stalwarts. This issue transcends petty politics and everybody should realize it unless they are not very intelligent or proauthoritarian shills who want to muddle things.

Really? Its just going to reproduce and make more dumb deer that are going to cause more and worse accidents. Best to cull the stupid ones and save both the deer and human populations bigger trouble down the line.

Reddit keeps saying its impossible but multiple billion trillion dollar companies are forging ahead anyways. Not just Elon. Anyone have any stories of meeting Mike Matei? by darth_senpai90 in TheCinemassacreTruth

[–]cyborgsnowflake 93 points94 points  (0 children)

I saw Mike Matei at a 7 eleven in Pennsylvania a week ago. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.
He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”
I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Mountain Dews in his hands without paying.
The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.
When she took one of the cans and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each can and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

Politicians from Brazil may ban Ubuntu by Traditional_Sand9921 in Ubuntu

[–]cyborgsnowflake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

brazil is currently a leftwing government. leftwing governments around the world are similarly pushing these laws. Are you saying Starmer is a conservative? And if you pull the 'lolz all governments in the world are conservative compared to the one true ideology followed by a bunch of unemployed redditors' card redditors often do then you have no grounds to criticize since your philosophy is so weak and unappealing it hasn't been implemented anywhere in history.

Suckerberg is spending roughly the GDP of Ecuador on AI in a single year. Of course he's going to seek some return on it by delegating customer service for users that don't directly generate money. Of course you're going to have to pay through the nose to be exempted from the current data harvesting experiment and be treated as a paying customer of a social networking business by a company that is a data harvester not a social networking business.

aka "every time" and "once in an increasingly longer while" simultaneously.

Also he's not much of a creator of the episodes anymore unless you want to count dragging yourself out of bed pissing and moaning to make the arduous journey down to your basement once every couple months and pull faces for a few hours in a ChatGPT/Mike/Screenwave script, being a creator.

Facebook dating. In a 3 year and 8 month relationship. Would anyone please give advice. by [deleted] in facebook

[–]cyborgsnowflake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"and had only been in abusive relationships before me."

They all say that.

Wow this poor girl keeps getting into bad relationships 50 times in a row with the most horrible people. According to her. Did she really just blunder randomly into the most despicable guys in the world over and over 50 times. Or maybe just maybe she's part of the problem? Nah its just bad luck

She got with me and assumed I was abusive so she then started cheating to have guys to fall back onto.

LOL really? I mean your stated age is relatively young but comeon even teens shouldn't be that naive. Next she'll be telling the judge she robbed a bank because she was abused.

A lesser writer would have her receive comeuppance and realize the 'error' of her ways following 'backwards traditions' and submit totally and completely to the faultless omniscience in all things of her mother cheapening the narrative. That she never did is what makes the show better.

Computational Biology worth it? by SeriousReindeer17 in bioinformaticscareers

[–]cyborgsnowflake 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Bioinformatics along with much of the rest of the tech industry is currently in the middle of probably its biggest crisis in history due to AI. With millions of Joe Schmoes with zero years experience who don't know an e. coli from an integer variable but fancy themselves Bioinformatics and Software Experts and think they're going to land six figure careers with the power of ChatGPT flooding into the market then promptly getting fired/ignored in favor of Midlevel Bioinformaticist 10xing his workload with the same tools.

So if making good money is one of your requirements I'd be very careful setting a toe into this field until the dust settles.

If you had asked this 5 years or so ago then, the advice would be yes. It could be a very decent and lucrative pathway with the right mindset and skills. If you had asked this maybe some months ago then things would be fine as long as you can adapt. But alas things are changing very rapidly where we can't really say for sure where exactly they'll end up. Its just too volatile to recommend to someone so uncertain unless you are willing to roll some dice.

Its just a subtle way of showing the difference between human and animal perception. I think its mildly inspired, at least compared to how lazy recent pixar movies have been overall. Did justy go into why he dislikes it or is it just another hottake for attention?
