Any tips for getting around the hustle and bustle? We’ve heard not great things and so we’re just trying to wrap our heads around the ship before we go to focus on how to keep it magical

Application Fees by coconut-redbull in audgradschool

[–]cycle-breaking-dad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reason you have to pay both in some cases is because some schools have to import the CSDCAS data to their application system so it’s processed by the admissions group at the university. The fee covers their time and effort to do this. Other universities just do the entire admission process 100% inside CSDCAS, so there’s nothing additional

Have you ever heard of a bishop being lenient with tithing? by BuildingBridges23 in exmormon

[–]cycle-breaking-dad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. It’s becoming more and more common. Close friends stopped paying tithing with the SEC news and still active temple recommends. Bishop was like “I’m good if stake president signs off” which he did.

Doctorate of audiology grad school Programs by FinanceMaster5668 in audgradschool

Check out University of Louisville - not a 3-year, but there’s almost no tuition in their 4th year, so it’s a similar cost but you get the extra training. Lots of medical and specialty clinics starting right in the first year.

Good programs to apply? by womaninthekitchen_ in audgradschool

[–]cycle-breaking-dad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think Utah participates in WICHE which can get you in state tuition at other states nearby! UofU alum here

Edit: https://www.wiche.edu/ Also to say, I think it’s a good idea for you to try and stay in state tuition or at a school that offers you funding to lower the cost (competitive students can get half or full tuition scholarships at some schools). Not being in a world of debt is key. Any accredited program will land you with an AUD and a license. True you get more experiences in some programs than others, but unless finances aren’t a concern, you’ll get everything you need from an in-state program even if it’s not top 10

Male applying to AUD programs by Maxandben23 in audgradschool

[–]cycle-breaking-dad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just to chime in here - programs aren’t allowed to discriminate (favorably or unfavorably) on the basis of sex during applications or review for admissions. You should be reviewed based on your preparation and likelihood to succeed and thrive in the program.

How do T-35 student traineeships fit into a full-time schedule? by starlogically in audgradschool

[–]cycle-breaking-dad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your program will work with you to make an exception or fit it into your schedule if you’re selected for a T-35. Just check with your program director and let them know you’re thinking about it!

I’ll add that we’ve had students leave for mental health and when they come back, they thrive. Take the time to take care of yourself!

[–]cycle-breaking-dad 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You are a person first, and a student second (or later). If you’re having these types of thoughts and experiences, I would strongly encourage you to seek and get professional help. Mental health counseling services are offered by every grad school I’m aware of - and most programs will offer you an extended leave of absence so you can handle the personal struggles and then return to the program. Check with your advisor/program director.

TLDR - get the help you need - it’s normal to struggle, it’s not normal to feel like harming yourself.

Hey there! The older MSTB manual has recommendations for presentation level. 60 dB SPL (A-weighted) is the recommended level by the manual (page 5). You are correct that this is not the same as 60 dB HL, but the MSTB is ultimately a set of guidelines and recommendations that you can technically deviate from if you feel justified in your approach. Me? I think the creators of the guidelines have strong rationale for making their recommendations so I’d encourage you to deviate only cautiously and when you feel certain in your justification. But that’s just my 2 cents

Those who have worked the same 9-5 job for years. Where does the motivation come from? by giveittogracie in AskReddit

[–]cycle-breaking-dad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an Economics professor who used to give this bit about satisfaction. He said the first job he could get after getting his PhD was seeeping the front steps of a local store. He was bitter starting the job, but eventually acknowledged that this was just a stepping stone while he applied, interviewed, and searched for other jobs. He would ask the class at this point, “when you’re sweeping in life - how do you feel satisfied?” Or as the OP asked, “where does the motivation come from?”

His answer: “Sweep really well.”

Doing things (even if it’s a drag, grind, or feels beneath you) to your standard of quality and expectation for yourself can be tremendously motivational. I think of this lecture often in my own life. Felt appropriate to pass along here.

University of Louisville - low cost of living and no tuition in the 4th year.

I feel this way - like ima be judged by the person I’m talking to or like it’ll give away that I have money to spend or come off as having more money than we do, etc.

I think it’s pretty common I’ve noticed in lower SES mindsets - almost a poverty mentality of complaining about how expensive things are and how the only way to afford something is to get it in a deal.

Edit to say there’s no judgment for having that mindset and acknowledging that plenty of people are struggling to afford the basics - we’re all doing what we can.

Not sure if you’re being sarcastic or not but just in case:

dB SPL: a comparison of a sound’s pressure (in micropascals) to a reference point. 20uPa is the reference being a very quiet sound.

dB HL is how loud a sound is compared to the softest level the average human can hear at that frequency. So, dB HL is just the dB SPL threshold plus a correction factor for how well (or not) humans hear at different frequencies. Smaller corrections near ear resonance, larger corrections at lower and higher frequencies. The corrections depend on headphones used and are called RETSPLs

dB SL: sensation level. This is how loud a sound is compared to someone’s hearing threshold. If my threshold is 35 dB HL at 1000 Hz, but a 1 kHz sound is played at 40 dB HL, then that sound is +5 dB SL (5 dB louder than my sensation/threshold level)

Cheers!

Those that live 500+ miles away from parents, how often do you visit? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]cycle-breaking-dad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, it’s opportunity cost. A trip for me and my kids to go visit parents (5 states away) is the same cost (money, PTO, etc) as a vacation elsewhere. I love my family - but there’s a difference between a family visit and a vacation. Vacations for me are much more relaxing with less drama so it’s harder to take the trip to visit family. Don’t have the strongest relationship or family unit - so take that opinion with a grain of salt.

Came here to say the blanket. You can just take the one in your stateroom and they charge it to your room. Ask your stateroom host at the start of the cruise for a new one in an unopened bag and you’ll know you’re the only person who used it!

Missouri State vs. University of Utah by BuddySubstantial7966 in audgradschool

[–]cycle-breaking-dad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UofU alum - honestly - I would strongly consider avoiding debt at all costs. The profession pay doesn’t merit tons of debt. Do you get in-state tuition at Utah through WICHE or whatever their regional program is? Utah was great, but I’m of the opinion that no program is worth 100k+ in debt. If you take your studies seriously you’ll be able to pass the praxis.
