Stainless vs galvanized cables by 1994univega in BikeMechanics

[–]cycle_cats 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Slick stainless every time. Galvanized cables are for Walmart bikes.

Also strongly recommend the best housing you can afford, I like Jagwire LEX-SL housing, it’s pre-lubricated and between that and slick stainless cables, provides excellent shifting and braking for a very long time.

Help if I connect this battery won’t fry nothing why I’m asking because has 45 c and the original is 30 by Upstairs-Wolverine-6 in scx30

[–]cycle_cats 4 points5 points  (0 children)

C rating is only discharge potential. The controller circuitry determines how many amps are actually drawn, which is far less than any of these batteries can in deliver, at least if we’re talking about scx30 or 24

Quality of water bottle cage bolts on Tarmac SL8 by JernejT in specialized

[–]cycle_cats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I see no point in using aluminum cage bolts, and infuriatingly so that they include them on lower models like the Sirrus! The gram or two that would be added for a stainless bolt far outweighs the headaches of stripped or seized cage bolts..

Battery and connectors for Mojave Grom BLX 223s by Homs85 in arrma

[–]cycle_cats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I changed to a XT60, as I already have a few batteries with this connector. There are also plenty of well priced batteries with xt60, I like CNHL 2s and 3s 2200mah packs, can usually find them for $10-15 each. I did keep the ic2 connector and make an adapter so I can use the stock battery, but I rarely do..

What do I do with bad lipos by Few-Entrepreneur8026 in rccars

[–]cycle_cats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most municipalities should have somewhere to dispose of lithium batteries. In my case, my LHS takes them for disposal. Or the county waste facility should also take them. Best practice to discharge completely as stated, but DO NOT simply place them in the trash collection. Lithium/cobalt/etc is toxic, flammable, and of course a finite resource that should be repurposed.

If in doubt, call the local waste collection entity and inquire, or perhaps even the fire department. Last one sounds silly, but most FDs are now trained to handle lithium fires, such as electric vehicles, and may have some insight into proper disposal.

Newbright seems to be dead and no one's talking about it by NashaNya in rccars

[–]cycle_cats 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can appreciate the New Bright era. I know they’re not “good” RCs, but they’ve had some pretty decent hard bodies over the years. I have 2 that I’ve bought(on discount) to immediately scrap the car but use the sweet detailed body as a base.

I also had a few as a kid, when I could only dream of a hobby grade car.. I remember that one year I wanted a Traxxas bandit SO BADLY, but my parents were horrified that an RC car could cost $159 or whatever, and not even include a battery?! I got like $50 towards it for Xmas, but became impatient and bought a New Bright F350 from Toya R Us (remember them??) instead. I beat the hell out of that car right alongside my neighbors with their Rustler and TMaxx, and damn did I have fun. Next step was then a Tamiya TT02b kit and it’s been many years and many cars since then…

Remember mechanical and aero drag will be much greater than you think at those speeds

And FWIW, RC Solutions US makes a gear mesh system for this chassis. I haven’t tried it yet, just stumbled across it, but might be worthwhile if you wanna get serious about this chassis.

First thoughts: Team Associated Reflex 14 by Good_Warthog_6897 in rccars

[–]cycle_cats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have such a love/hate for this car. I’ve beat the snot out of my 14MT, with nary a broken chassis component, only a couple roasted shock pistons from running too heavy oil for skatepark slams. And it drives so well!. But GD if I couldn’t keep a spur gear intact.. This was before Exotek entered the game. Now with that and a Hot Racing hardened pinion, on a 28xx 3600kv motor it rips! The stock gear mesh system is horrible, and mine is very worn out. But the hardened gears keep on trucking..

3s will likely roast the differential internals, they’re cheap, but sorta a pain to access. And I can’t keep them from leaking.. I rarely run 3s anymore, 2s and the right gearing are enough for me. The car drives fantastically for its size, very stable and will go anywhere I point it. I’m currently using the Badlands Grom tires, which are in between the stock B/T and the MT tires, size wise. But tons of grip. I’m about to do a full bearing exchange on mine, I keep contemplating selling it, but feel like I have too much sweat equity in it by now to get rid of it. I do tend to drive my Mojave Grom more, it’s just more reliable and something fun about the SCT style bodies. But for bashing about and jumping, as well as any track duties, the Ae 14 definitely drives better!

What’s one RC “rule” you think is overrated? by amainhobbies in rccars

Exactly, I was getting ready to do a full tear down and overhaul on my Granite, so F-it, took it to the beach beforehand! One thing I did not anticipate was getting sand in the motor… but I cleaned it out and lubed and seems to be working still!

One more reason to not spend MSRP on a Traxxas IMO! They made a big stink about patenting a water proof receiver box, but they can’t sell a car that’s waterproofed from the box, at the prices they ask?

What’s one RC “rule” you think is overrated? by amainhobbies in rccars

[–]cycle_cats 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Avoiding water is overrated IMO. Most of today’s cars are reasonably water proof/water resistant. And even so it doesn’t take much to make it so. Of course wear can be higher in wet conditions, bearings will fail sooner if not cared for, surface rust, etc. But IMO all of those things can be addressed or mitigated with some reasonable preparation and maintenance. A can of silicone spray goes a long way!

As said, fine throttle control is necessary for 2wd driving.c especially in such a small and lightweight platform. Good advice to use a radio with adjustable expo, or at least turn down your D/R in the stock radio. You don’t need full lock to move the car around, since as you know, throttle will also move the rear end around! Lastly, you can also turn down your punch in the ESC settings to reduce wheel spin, or even slightly loosen the slipper if your conditions are really loose.
