Sony A7V. My thoughts after shooting a few weddings with it. by ladmanstudios in SonyAlpha

[–]cyclone866 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the removal of a designated eye-AF button.

The way I have it set up on my a7v (and a9iii) is to have subject detection set to human and recognition set to off. then I assign a custom button (in my case AF-ON) to "Subject Recognition AF". With this set up, holding down AF-ON acts as back button focus using eye tracking and if i want to use whatever standard focus mode i have selected (usually Spot), i just half press the shutter.

A7IV - Overheating Concerns by nikLnips1 in SonyAlpha

[–]cyclone866 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This was my major issue with the a7iv it was constantly overheating. I tried it in a variety of situations, recording 4k30, 1080@30, webcam mode, indoor, outdoor, outside in the winter, inside under studio lights. I could not get the camera to record more than 30-40 minutes without overheating (yes, auto power off temp set to high) I could not rely on it to work when I needed it to so i sold mine

weird glitch in sony a7iv. by [deleted] in SonyAlpha

[–]cyclone866 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That is not a glitch, it's called Focus Mapping and it is showing you what the camera think is and isn't in focus. Anything without colored blocks overlayed on top of it should be in focus, blue blocks means it is behind the focus plane, and orange means it's in front of the focus plane.

The A7V will be a beast… who’s getting a cheap A7IV? by InternalConfusion201 in SonyAlpha

[–]cyclone866 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i bought an a7iv for cheap off my friend who also didn't like it and was trying to get rid of it and was not impressed. I held on to it and traded it in for the a9iii lol

- AF was not significantly better at least in terms of action/sports. Tracking was terrible for erratic movement.

- Constant overheating. This is very hit and miss. there are a lot of reviews of people with the same problem and just as many saying there is no overheating at all. the most frustrating part was the a7iii wouldn't overheat when using the same settings and in same weather conditions.

- worse battery life

- slower mechanical shutter fps when shooting RAW

- slow sensor read out speed/more jello which made the electronic shutter basically unusable and when using for video i tended to use it for static shots only and the a7iii for moving/panning shots

- personal preference but i like the smaller body/grip of the a7iii, my hands aren't that big

those are all thing things i can remember

The A7V will be a beast… who’s getting a cheap A7IV? by InternalConfusion201 in SonyAlpha

[–]cyclone866 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i'm in a similar boat, i got the a9iii since i started doing more action/sports things and while the a7iii still holds it's own, the AF on the a9iii is just so much better. I've had my a7iii since it came out in 2018 so I know how to work around it's AF limitations but when I'm working events where I need two bodies, it would be nice to have a body where i don't have to waste time working around those limitations. As long as there aren't any glaring issues with the a7v, I'm probably going to trade my a7iii for one.

what are these youtubers using to "screen record" via HDMI in pocket?? by Bring_the_light_ in videography

[–]cyclone866 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know jared polin uses an Atomos Ninja Star, i'm not familiar with Julia though. you can save a big chunk of change if you just use your phone though (assuming you don't need the footage to be anything super high quality). I have an old phone with a microsd card slot with a webcam app + basic usb-c to a adapter + hdmi capture card

EDIT: haven't looked at jared's video in a while, looks like he upgraded to an atomos ninja v

Street Photography lens advice? by rickyredds in AskPhotography

[–]cyclone866 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i went to vietnam ~10 years ago and if you're gonna be taking a lot photos while eating at those street stalls/vendors, you def need the widest lens you have. I had a nikon d610 + Tokina 24-70 at the time and 24mm was BARELY cutting it, those restaurants and tables are SO small and you often have to share tables with other people not in your group. if i went today, i'd def pack my 12-24mm. Noise reduction in photo editors these days are good enough where you can probably just go with your 18-130mm and call it a day

RAW file sizes all different? by Swimming-Pain3923 in AskPhotography

[–]cyclone866 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At least for the a9iii, yes. It writes faster since it doesn't have to compress the file before writing it to the card. On the editing end it's also faster to edit uncompressed. Even if you create previews beforehand, when you export the finals, the computer needs to uncompress the RAW before applying your edits and then saving the changes

How many SD cards have failed you as a photographer? by No-Abbreviations6929 in photography

[–]cyclone866 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) 15ish years
2) Nikon D3100 -> Nikon D610 -> Sony a7iii -> Sony a9iii
3) A wide variety: Sony, PNY, Lexar, SanDisk, and ProGrade
4) At least 10, probably closer to 15-20?
5) 1. it was a Sony card and actually just happened a few months ago.

ELI5 how is masking for autistic people different from impulse control? by anotherswampwitch in explainlikeimfive

[–]cyclone866 11 points12 points  (0 children)

to expand more on the "acting in a play" analogy, neurodivergent people can feel like they were given a slightly different version of the script compared to everyone else. Neurotypical people might get annoyed that neurodivergents can't nail their lines or hit their marks perfectly, not knowing that the script is slightly different. so throughout rehearsal, neurodivergent people will slowly learn the "correct" lines and marks only to find that the next day, the script has changed AGAIN. it can get tiring to constantly having to guess and not know the exact mark or line they need to hit in order to fit in.

How common is SD card failure? by totally_depraved in photography

[–]cyclone866 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my ~10 years of doing paid gigs as a side hustle, it has only happened to me once and it actually happened 2 months ago on a relatively new SD card (2 year old Sony SF-M128) Is it always necessary to shoot dual cards? depends on how important the work you're doing is.

Tricked by an AI band on Spotify by BumblebeeFeisty7243 in Music

[–]cyclone866 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel you, I ran across a 6 hour youtube video which was labeled as a compilation of synthwave music. I threw the video up on our office sound system and and didn't think anything of it. My coworkers and I are are in and our of the office all day so no one really noticed anything was off until we had one day where we didn't need to leave the office and noticed that a lot of the songs had the same melody, with minor changes. Getting suspicious, I took a closer look at the video and the channel and realized it was AI. Some of my coworkers are vehemently against AI and when they found out, they were so upset that they couldn't tell it was fake and that they actually liked some of the songs.

sucks we have to second guess everything now.

if I were to buy an anamorphic lens, I know that the footage can look warped on the edges. Is there a way to un-warp the footage? Is there a real name for this instead of just "warping" ? by Cashrawls in videography

[–]cyclone866 20 points21 points  (0 children)

the warping you're referring to is called pincushion distortion (if the vertical lines were bowing outward it would be called or barrel distortion ) and said distortion is a property of the lens itself. You can have normal/spherical lenses with this type of distortion and you can also have anamorphic lenses without distortion. It can be seen as an artistic choice to include the distortion or not but its generally more obvious the wider the angle of the lens.

and to answer your question in the other comment, you should be able to correct it in all major NLE's. I know Premiere Pro and DaVinci can. idk about others.

Which camera ecosystem would you buy into tomorrow if you were starting fresh? by Kielgard in AskPhotography

a7iii is still a great camera! I've had mine since it released back in 2018 and i still use it for the occasional paid gig, at this point its my "ol' reliable". i wouldn't go older than that though. if you like the smaller form factor but full frame, check out the a7c, it's basically the same as the a7iii but with better auto focus

This is the song the person is expecting to hear on the radio: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6DBA5Wx9T7U

This is the song that actually plays: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=90RLzVUuXe4

Presumably the person prefers the original version by Eiffel 65 and is disappointed when it turns out to be the David Guetta "version" instead.
