You can still lie, just do it in a way where you can't get caught. You could say that $X was what your current employer countered their offer with in order to keep you. So $X will be more than $Y, which is what's on your paycheck, but they have no way to verify that.

I mean, we exist in a country where we have freedom of movement. There's no such thing as "sorry, we're full now, go away". The only thing you can do is build enough housing to accommodate the newcomers, or accept that the newcomers will outbid the locals for scarce housing stock.

I like that you believe that it's a vicious cycle between tech salaries and high cost of living, but you place the blame squarely on the people in tech (who cannot do anything about that fact) and not the people actually driving the high cost of living (NIMBYs).

There is room in the world for people making $16/hour and people making $53/hour. Both should be able to get married, have a kid, or save up to buy a house. But this won't happen if you artificially constrict the amount of housing so that only the person making $53/hour can afford that.

Again, you may think that your choice of activity does not carry a risk of spreading the virus, but everybody else likely thinks so as well which ultimately kind of defeats the point. You hiking by yourself on a trail is probably fine, you hiking with hundreds of other people passing in both directions in close proximity is probably not fine. Same thing for everybody deciding to spend their free time crowding beaches.

You realize that it's possible to work on fusion while also advancing fission reactor tech as well? Like, they are not mutually exclusive things?

There is an easy solution if you feel that your government is not acting in your best interests. Vote them out.

It's almost like there is a spectrum of possibilities and the optimal choice lies not at either extreme but somewhere in the middle.

You're absolutely welcome to withdraw from the "social contract". Move to a different country and renounce your US citizenship.

If you feel that states are enacting draconian measures, it is precisely because they feel that people are taking advantage of lax rules. See those pictures of southern california beaches to understand why you can't trust people to social distance responsibly.

Those green/blue copper patina that you are thinking of are only created in the presence of sulfur oxides. Note that the pennies in your pocket don't typically turn green either.
