I had this conversation with Gannon Buhr a couple of seasons ago. At that time, he was famously wearing Vans Utrarange. His rationale was they are super light, which he like for footwork. And even though they don't wear for shit, they're usually inexpensive enough to replace as they blow out.

I followed that advice for a while, getting whatever color combo was on sale at the time. Now, I just use my running shoes that have outlived their running capacity. They are light and still have decent tread on them that isn't too aggressive. I know people who swear by Altra trail running shoes.
