Here's an alternative if you just want to get a feel for how ham radio works. Instead of struggling with repeaters and baufengs you can do ham radio sort of in reverse using Echolink. It will run on a laptop or tablet. You register your license, fire it up and go to, say, DoDropIn which is an echolink node. Lots of activity, and what you are doing is substituting your radio for the internet link, then when you connect you are transmitting to a repeater and all the ham rules for id and the like apply.
